iamguessing magic is frowned on in the event, correct? If not, I might enter Clay and just pin everyone to the ground with entangle.

Olaf will enter if he can use a pick instead of a sword.

It is the Tourney of Swords. They supply wooden sparing swords for the event (short or long), allowing all damage to be temporary (and not impact expeditions leaving the next morning).

And yes, magic is frowned upon. Particularly cast-magic, which the agrarian commoners would be quite skeptical of.

Halfpint goes off to a nearby quiet location and practices swinging a wooden sword to hopefully get the balance correct. She was embarrassed by her archery failure, and certainly wants to avoid becoming the town punchline.

They seem confused and resort to some whispered discussion. But the ways of dwarves are new to them and they do not wish to offend. They search around for some farm tools and modify one to resemble a wooden pick at Olaf's request.

Overhearing Foxy's comment, Captain Bremen snickers approvingly.

Clay Weatherwax sits down and writes a short letter to Gus at the Farrow Farm. The letter explains about Kumsar, the oft-times-invisible tiger-thing with purple butterfly wings, who resides on the plains where they went exploring. He also explains about the deal they struck to remain unmolested so Gus may be prepared in the event he ventures to the motte again. Clay also informs Gus that he is having a meeting house constructed one hour's walk from the motte, offering an open invitation to come and stay if he would like. The building will be finished by the end of the month if things go according to plans.

He locates Annabelle Farrow to deliver it when she returns to the farm after the festival. He also enjoys some of the fresh strawberries she is offering to the locals.

11:00am

The appointed hour arrives, the buzz from the archery contest just beginning to simmer down. The crowd once again assembles around the sparring ring. Sir Albecht raises a mailed fist on his dais, the crowd quieting to a dull rustle. "We count ourselves blessed that our land here in the North calls forth such talented heroes from the Southlands. Many come, leaving behind the previous renown, but none of their previous skill! For in the name of Baudh, all strength must be proven, and by trial in combat, we shall witness it today." He gives a signal and a pair of guardsmen bring forward a bin of wooden weapons, sparring instruments from their barracks. "Each champion shall choose their weapons, and fight in a series of five rounds until one victor stands surpreme." A tourney board is produced, elimination rounds proposed based on the sign-ups on the bulletin board. "Four rise and come forward to gain this honor, unseating the veterans who have served us in previous years. Lady Zirina, mistress of the double blades, and Mormont, esquire of the southern kingdoms, are the reigning champions and will display their skill against those who rise to challenge them. I have no doubt that we shall see good sport of it, today."

"One man," calls Willhelm grandiosely, "a slayer of trolls who is confirmed by our river wardens, comes with name and repute to this day! A mere lumberjack risen to great deeds! Shall he prevail against an esquire of high blood?" He moves down the lists. "But first, we have other races among us! He must face a newcomer, a woman unknown, a hobbit who goes by Half-pint!" There is a bit of chuckle from the crowd. "I wish you all luck, my lady," he genuflects to Halfpint. "And to face the ferocious Zirina, an unlikely pair duel for the honor! Both veterans of expeditions to the East, of tales sung about the spectral halls of ancient dead, and who, briefly, faced the Ogre slain by Irving, if tales be true!" He motions to the box. "Gentlemen, prove your valor, and take your weapons!" The crowd cheers for Olaf and Bandy to take the ring.

We'll run this as normal combat to 0 hp. All damage is temporary from the wooden swords and you'll have the opportunity to rest between rounds to start the next round full.

Bandy steps into the corded off area, draws a wooden longsword from the proffered assortment and bows at the dwarf.

After a few swings to find its balance, he waits for the call to start. When the horn blows, he jumps right in at his slightly taller opponent...

Olaf picks the wooden pick and gives it a heft. Not as solid as a real pick, and it would printer to bits against rock, but it's better'n a sword, he figures.
