Captain Dillon Wyse

"Mr. Nadix, how close is this planet from developing interplanetary travel? Can we scan and locate the material used in the hull of the ship that landed in the northern hemisphere?"

Nurse Teklah contacts Dr. Ryerson to report her findings.

"Doctor, the mutation is located in one particular bond in the molecular structure. The bond is somehow failing to maintain covalence, forcing the whole compound to deteriorate more quickly than it should. I theorize with 65% certainty that unknown radiation may be the cause. Request permission to engage Physics Lab personnel to investigate the radiation theory, as the Chem Lab lacks the resources."

"Permission granted Nurse Teklah."

'The report states that the denizens of the planet are only capable of limited wind power, so identification of the vessel ought to be trivial. If the vessel remains relatively intact, I believe we could locate it easily if we focus our scans on the highlighted area of the planet.

Our current high orbit has us circling the planet every 4 hours, so it should not take us any longer than that to gain a lead.'

Mr Nadix's comment is almost cut short by the distinct whistle of the intercom unit on the captain's chair. Wyse glances at the lighted display next to his right elbow—it's coming from Engineering down on Deck 7. He presses the button with a click to open the channel. 'This is the Captain.'

Chief Engineer Gareb Endilev's exotic Andorian voice comes through the speaker, singed around the edges with vexation and anger.

'Captain, Janus is experiencing a steady drain in her warp coils. Diagnostics show everything is normal, except for the drain. The source of the drain has to be external. Something, or someone, is leeching warp power from our engines. I've managed to buy us some time and cut the drain in half. The ships warp power could be completely drained as early as 12 hours from now, and with our weak store of dilithium, repairs, if we could stop the energy drain right now, will take at least 5 hours. We're working on identifying whatever the external source of the power drain is, and how to stop it.' The panel light flickers, showing that Gareb is awaiting a response.

LCDR Dale Collins, human Helmsman

Dale backs up the Engineer with; "Indeed, Captain, I noticed a slight dip in the power as well."

Captain Dillon Wyse

"Mr. Nadix, I need theories and I need them now. Anything from plasma cloud to a leach on the hull. We need to stop the engines from bleeding power."

After working with Physics Lab personnel, Nurse Teklah reports back to Dr. Ryerson.

"Doctor, the radiation is of an unknown type, probably artificial and radiates outward from the planet, extending to several thousand kilometres out into space. Furthermore, the source of the radiation can be traced to a specific spot on the northern hemisphere of the planet, with a 50-mile margin of error. All tricorders have been updated to track this radiation."

Dr. Ryerson:

"Thank you Nurse Teklah for your report. Suspend the antibiotic production until further notice."

Dr. Ryerson clicks off the comms with Nurse Teklah and reestablishes them and calls to the bridge.

The bridge once again receives a call through the intercom, this time from Needles Ryerson's office in Sickbay.

Needles Ryerson:

"Captain how long are we going to in orbit of this planet? It's radiation is interfering with my antibiotic development samples."

The Edosian put three orange hands upon his chin in thought, and calmly said, "Captain, one theory is that the planet's radiation field is the culprit. To test the validity of this theory, we need to remove the Janus from upper orbit and observe the results, if any, sir."

Ensign Manion returns to the bridge. He hands Capt. Dillon an electronic clipboard and reports:

Furthermore, the source of the radiation can be traced to a specific spot on the northern hemisphere of the planet, with a 50-mile margin of error. "Mr. Collins, take us out of upper orbit. Please us outside of this radiation belt." Dillon then presses down the intercom located in the arm of his chair. "Bridge to Engineering. Mr. Endilev, we are moving the Janus out of the planet's orbit. Let me know how the distance affects the ship's power."

Mr. Collins punches in the commands and the muffled hum of the impulse drives creeps forward to the front of the U.S.S. Janus. For a moment everyone experiences that familiar, brief tingling sensation in their feet as the floors vibrate from the power of the engines, and then Coxa II slowly begins sinking away from view.

10,000km… 11,000km… 12,000km… 'Now out of transporter and communicator range, sir,' pipes up Ms. Chau, the communications officer.

"...Also sensor range, captain," Commander Nadix added.

The Edosian was curious to learn whether the planetary radiation theory was supported or disproven by this test. He experienced a pleasant tension of anticipation...

LCDR Dale Collins, Helmsman

"Aye, aye Captain"; Dale responded to the Captain's orders as he proceeded to move the ship to its assigned position away from the radiation. Upon reaching the correct distance, he calls out; "We've now cleared the radiation radius Captain" and he proceeds to move the ship into a new orbit at this range.
