I agree completely!
Me too. I also agree these aren't evil people. Maybe they were in denial, thinking with the best of intentions that they'd get back on the stick any day now, and before they knew it, a month has passed and, embarrassed, they don't know how to start it up again. Especially those, as Ogre Mage points out, who had been aggressively sharing ambitious visions for their campaign. It's too bad.

There are very few really bad people out there, but they do exist.

Most people are good and just make really bad decisions.

This is a permanent topic for pbp forums, unfortunately. In my experience US is quite successfull in that respect as even though many games die there are many others, old and new, and an active and healthy community that makes this place very special.

Also: it's been a while since I posted here - hi everyone!

Hey, check that sh!t, Hudson. We haven't started a Player Death thread yet. You'll have to hold on to your comments until then, Zeb. ;)

Kidding, of course. Welcome back. Glad our US Player Finder (spell patent pending) was able to drag you back.

Good to be back. I might try joining a game in the near future, maybe even DMing if RL gets sufficiently quiet.

Hi Zeb!

Be careful, there hasn't been a new game started in a while. With a lot of deaths recently, you might have a long list of available players. :)

With everyone clamoring for a new game, you'd think someone would start one. ;)

Be the change to want to see in the world, and all that. :D

The antidote to Game Death = Game Birth?

Well you see some of us already have a game some more going so us saying we want a new game likely means we want to play in one not DM another one. ;) Game Birth is glorious :D

When I see a bunch of players eager to play, it makes me want to throw caution to the wind and start up another game. And then I remember I am already running two games and playing in three others...and it makes me sad I do not have enough time to devote to my favorite game like I want to. (sigh) Think I'll have another beer.

Ironic isn't it, that we are having this sort of conversation on a game death topic? We all seem to get easily excited about joining a new game or starting one up when people show enthusiasm. But isn't this just building up one of the many formulas that can lead to a game death? Not trying to be a killjoy or grouch when I say this, just sharing something I recently observed after seeing hedgeknight post. I thought it had some relevance. ;)

Quoted for truth. And unfortunately I think I have fallen into this camp a time or two. Which is why I've been trying to limit myself to only being in a few games. When I first joined here I was an enthusiastic puppy, jumping after every shiny new game that started. I quickly realized that with the up and down schedule of my work and family life that wasn't going to be viable. It was a hard lesson to learn...

So you're saying the way to reduce the number of aborted games is with game birth control?

In other news, your friendly neighborhood Grim Reaper reports that after the recent administrator purging of dead games from the front page, over 20% of the remaining games are now dead!
What the what?!?

I noticed there's a new category "abandoned games" (well new to me anyway). A neat tag - useful

Not surprised. Like previous posts in this thread, people get in over their heads and/or real life smacks 'em in the face and games either die or are abandoned.

Personally, I like the "Abandoned Games" thread > as a player, it helps me avoid certain DM's who do not care about their players, and as a DM, it helps me avoid the same person(s) who might hit me up to play in my game. I figure if they don't give a shit about their own game, they won't care about mine and there are plenty of players out there who will.

One thing another PBP website does is to offer a solo adventure for first time players to get them used to the PBP format. I wonder if it would help to do something similar but for DMs. Have prospective DMs pick a quick, one-shot module to run for a month or two with some experienced players. At the end, the players could critique their performance. This would help the DM find out if they could handle a PBP game and give other players a body of the DMs work to examine.
