The pit is outside of the room, in front of the stairwell. Getting him back there would take some work. You can grapple him where you are, try to get by him, dagger, punch, etc. I'm not a big fan of the unarmed combat rules. I'll have to look them up. Or just roll to hit, then its Str. check to hold, Str. check to break free, that sort of thing.

Just let me know how you want to handle grappling, and I'll tell you what I want to do. I didn't used to be a fan of the unarmed combat rules, either, until I sat down and studied them. I admit that they're complicated, and some of the modifiers being based on some very specific details of one's armor doesn't necessarily make sense when armor is assumed to have a helmet of indeterminate style and type. I don't think they're terrible, though as stated in the DMG. In UA they propose two systems for unarmed combat. The first is simplified a is basically just a to-hit roll with a few modifiers. The second is more like what was in the DMG, but probably a little more clear, although there's not the varied effects and opportunities for counter attack. I'm flexible. I always think it's interesting to see what people pick.

For ease of play and speed, let's go with system 1 in UA. In light of that, feel free to alter Round Three actions if you want. Thanks.

System 1 is good with me. Everyone slams UA, and while it definitely has some shortcomings, I think the way it cleaned up the weaponless combat procedure was a good thing.

She'll still attempt to grapple.

Thug & Pole - Round 3

The thug whacks at Zix with the pole as the elf tries to grapple the man. Neither manages to connect.

Actions for Round 4!

unsuccessfully!

Rotten luck.

Thug & Pole - Round 4

Zix and the thug thrash about again. The elf tries to grapple the slippery rogue, who uses his pole to foil her grasps. But in turn his own strikes against Zix are unsuccessful.

Actions for Round 5!

Thug & Pole - Round Five

The rogue and elf circle each other, sparring, grappling, trying to bring each other down. Zix lunges and is blocked again by the pole. She in turn bats his pole off target.

Actions for Round 6!
- Initiative: The Runner [1d6] = 3 vs. Enemy [1d6] = 3 Simultaneous
- Thug pole [1d20] = 11, dam [1d6] = 6 Miss
- From initiative to attack rolls, this fight seems very equal. He is 4th level AC 8 though.

To accelerate this combat, go ahead and make a set of six rolls (or less if you score a bunch of damage and think he may be out.) Then I'll look at them compared to the thug's roll and summarize the fight in one post. Thanks.

Thug & Pole - Finale

Zix and the thug dance about. The elf loses patience and draws her dagger. Slash, slash, shash, she slices three times. The thug manages one whack across Zix's shoulder (2 HP damage) before the elf thief drops the thug with a final blow of her dagger.

Zix moves from the short 10' corridor, the site of the fight, into the room. It is about 20' across and 30' long. To her right in the middle of the east wall is a door. Across from it in the west wall is a 1' diameter metal gong, held inside a locked cage with bars an inch apart. The distance from bars to the gong is about 16". Above the gong is a wall sconce with a lit torch.
- Initiative: Zix won three of the first four round, tying in one:

32097 The Guild Master Assassin's Run Initiative: The Runner [1d6] = 4 vs. Enemy [1d6] = 2 5/22/2014 8:30:06 PM
32096 The Guild Master Assassin's Run Initiative: The Runner [1d6] = 5 vs. Enemy [1d6] = 3 5/22/2014 8:30:02 PM
32095 The Guild Master Assassin's Run Initiative: The Runner [1d6] = 2 vs. Enemy [1d6] = 2 5/22/2014 8:29:58 PM
32094 The Guild Master Assassin's Run Initiative: The Runner [1d6] = 5 vs. Enemy [1d6] = 4 5/22/2014 8:29:54 PM

- Damage: Zix hit AC 8 with the 11's. Damage rolled was 10. Combined first four hits did it.
- Zix damage on 11's [1d4+1] = 4+1 = 5, [1d4+1] = 4+1 = 5
- Thug to-hits [1d20] = 5, [1d20] = 13, [1d20] = 18, [1d20] = 1 Zix hit in third round.
- Thug pole dam in 3rd round [1d6] = 2 2 HP to Zix

Zix will examine the locked cage for traps..
unsuccessfully, and attempt to open the cage.

The cage appears to be untrapped, but is locked. Inside it is a 1' diameter metal gong. The cage bars are an inch apart. The distance from bars to the gong is about 16".

Above the gong is a wall sconce with a lit torch. Behind Zix in the middle of the room is the chair the thug was sitting in.

She'll search the thug's body for a key. If she doen't find it there, she'll look under the chair.

No key is found on the thug or under/on the chair. The gong beckons inside the locked cage.

She'll collect her things from the ground (bow, 10' pole) and attempt to pick the lock..
..unsuccessfully. Failing that she'll try take an arrow shaft and see if she can reach the gong.

The lock fails to open to Zix's caresses. She pokes her arrow shaft through and hits the right spot. The gong rings.

There is click at the east door behind Zix, as if it just unlocked.

Caresses? Don't get too excited, hot shot.

She'll check the door for traps..
..unsuccessfully, grab the torch from the sconce and look inside the door.
