Mick-
As soon as the turn ‘round decision is made, Mick messages Sophia, asking if she can spend the evening again with him. “I picked last night, your turn to decide how we spend this evening. Gotta do some more negotiating with Cathrine first.”

He’d also call Catherine and the Blue Clan to inform them of a possible immediate trade. He’d ask for a negotiation upon their return.

He’d remind Joe to speak with Marcel.

Once all that is done, and reception of an immediate trade is made clear, he’d ask DJ and Bart to contact VET and X-2 to see if they can do as planned. Perhaps VET or X-2 has an immediate delivery need.

Y2156.11.18:noon (DJ, Joe & Mick)

DJ:
It was a hectic morning for DJ of plans, surprises, opportunities and new plans as he attempted to juggle everything going on. In no particular order …

TRANSONIC STOL FLYING BOAT: DJ contacted the owners of the Bush Plane (11 tonne cargo capacity) about his current and future needs. They had JUST what he needed … a Flying Boat (for water landings), STOL for wilderness landings (like the larger STOL Bush Plane), a 2 tonne cargo capacity and an 800 kph cruise speed. The cost to rent the Flying Boat was Cr 940 per day plus Cr 400 per day for the pilot. The plane was available now but his pilot would not be free until 0030 on Day 20. DJ needed a pilot to make this trip happen sooner.

CARGO TO ST. OYLAND: It was not easy to locate the eclectic supplies on Joe’s list with no notice and in sub-tonne lots and for a good price and for immediate pickup … but DJ was able to locate 600 kg of the items on the list [Cr 4200 FMV] for a purchase price of Cr 4620 [110% of FMV] with a St. Oyland sale price of Cr 5460.

FRUIT: DJ was a bit rushed for time, but located a buyer willing to pay Cr 1200 at a nearby village. DJ would either have to deliver the cargo himself or pay a trucker Cr 30 per tonne to deliver it.
Fruit [35] = Cr 1000 / ton x 10 tons
Buy = [4] = 70% = Cr 700 / ton
Sell = [7]+2 = 9 = 120% FMV = Cr 1200 / ton x 10 tons [delivered @ Cr 30 / tonne]

MANEUVER DRIVES: DJ still had one more ball to keep in the air. There were two spacers in town with a truckload of Starship Maneuver Drive. Even if that cargo wasn’t worth a lot of money … and it was … that sort of thing raises a LOT of questions in your mind when there are no Starports within 8000 km and you are part of a group looking to own a starship!

DJ headed off to his 1400 lunch meeting.

Joe and Mick:
Joe and Mick went to work setting the revised plan in motion. Things went NOTHING like they expected.

MARCEL: You first spoke with Marcel about the idea of driving for the COMPANY.. You explained that you would provide the vehicle and the cargo shipments and Marcel would deliver them to Village X-2 and perhaps the Comm Tower. You explained DJ’s idea that it would give marcel a chance to get out of the colony and experience some of the world.

Marcel seemed uninterested. What Marcel wanted was to be a HUNTER … so the cute girl in the Red Clan would notice him the way she noticed the other Hunters … the “real men”. Mick nodded for Joe to give him a moment and Mick took Marcel aside to talk to him about some aspects of the job that he may not have considered. For example, DRIVERS traveled the same dangerous wilderness that HUNTERS traveled, only a DRIVER had to be braver and more self-reliant because he didn’t have a whole hunting party to protect him. It was just one man and his vehicle against whatever nature and the creatures threw at him. Hunters bringing back food was all good, but nothing mattered more to a mother with a sick child than the man that brought the medicine safely to the doctors that would save her child. “Oh yeah, DRIVERS always travel armed ‘cause they never know when a predator might try to attack the vehicle and a Real Man would be forced to defend the supplies people are counting on. Of course pretty much anyone can learn to shoot and become a hunter … it takes a special sort to both kill a predator and keep a truck running.”

Mick saw the light go on and suddenly Marcel could not wait to become a DRIVER! You braced for the talk with Christine about getting the Blue Clan permission to enlist Marcel as a driver to expand trade to the nearest Arctic Community. Joe prepared all his best Economic arguments. To your surprise, the Blue Clan simply offered no objections. They were skeptical, but they simply adopted a “wait and see what happens” approach that seemed more pragmatic than expected for a culture so ‘unreasonable’ in so many other ways.
Marcel = roll [6] = unreceptive … (+3 Mick) [6+3] = 9 = “intrigued”
Blue Clan = roll [7] = neutral

DRUGS: With lots of time and little to do until your “ride” came, there was time to become more familiar with St. Oyland Pharmaceuticals. For one thing, you learned that their creation involved the Green Clan, who produced the plant and animal based starter ingredients. The Blue Clan, that handled the refining and chemical processes. The White Clan, who held the closely guarded secrets that would be ‘intellectual patents’ in more industrial societies. The DRUGS were classified and distribution controlled by each of the clans based on the nature and danger of the Drug.
A drug you found in common use was called “PIPEWEED”. This plant was dried and smoked with the reported results of the mind both sharper and duller at the same time. It was claimed that after smoking about 5 minutes worth of PIPEWEED (Cr 20), it was easier to remember facts (+ EDU) but harder to concentrate on abstract reasoning (-INT). These effects persisted for most of the day after smoking it, but dissipated overnight. It was commonly used to aid in learning new things by local residents (who claimed to retain the information gained under the boosted EDUCATION). You could not even imagine how the LL 7 Bureaucrats would react to PIPEWEED.

The Black Clan, of all places, introduced you to a MEDICAL drug they were quite fond of called “SA” (short for Suspended Animation). This Cr 100 per dose marvel was injected into someone that was critically injured and induced a ‘hibernation’ state that extended the critical 5 minute survival window out to 4 or 5 hours. The Black Clan had saved more than one ‘dead man’ by getting them treatment in that 5 hour window. They also sang the praises of a drug called “BOOST” (Cr 400 per dose) that increased STR and END for 30 minutes. The White Clan controlled access to both SA and BOOST.

While going over details of the Tracked ATV with Marcel, he mentioned a drug that was common among the Blue Clan called “BLACKROOT”. It was sort of like a black stick that you chewed and made your lips and tongue tingle pleasantly … but Marcel warned not to swallow it or it will cause really bad nausea. He claimed that it made your mind sharp and alert (+ INT) which can be a plus for Technical workers.

BART: Bart was simply unavailable at the present time. He had started his own EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTING office and had just taken time off to train DJ. He had clients that he needed to get back to that could not wait any longer. He was interested in possible future involvement, but this was just a bad time for him.

Joe was a little frustrated by Marcel's attitude, but when Mick turned him around he was very happy.

The wait and see attitude by the Blue Clan was sort of what he expected. Joe didn't say it, but he thought (a) they had probably tried similar things in the past that didn't work out and (b) were generally unsure about the effects trade would have on the local economy...and culture. Taking it slow and working out what works for both sides is a good idea, and Joe says so during the discussions with Catherine and other Blue Clan members (if others are involved).

Joe points out to Mick that all of these drugs *could* already be classified as illegal substances by the government down south depending on what active ingredients each has. They certainly could be restricted in sale and distribution...prescription level drugs. In any case, the Company might need licenses to sell any or all of them. That needs investigation and that probably means somebody doing chemical analysis on each of them and then searches in the Pharmacological Database. As none of us have the scientific training or medical skills to do the analysis we're going to have to bring in someone that does.

If the Blue Clan knows which are already bog-legal we need to find out and go with those at the beginning while the others are investigated and vetted by the proper regulatory agency. From St Oyland, Joe will get on the comm and try to start looking at the Database to see if he can find similar (or same) drugs in use and already cleared (or proscribed) by the government and what the regulations are and how the approval process works on this world.

Joe is a little perturbed about Bart. He was hoping he would be a full-time partner in the Company and would eventually be the one running their operations operations down south (Joe still wants to get back into space) :). If might still happen, but it looks like he's going to have to be won over.

Mick will support Joe in his discussion and research regarding the drug deal. Illicit? No. Alternative legitimate medicines, or grey legality, maybe..depending on what the research into their contents reveals.

While Joe is doing that, Mick will comms on DJ’s progress, inform the Blue Clan of what is available for the Northbound leg, then begin negotiating prices on ANIMAL HIDES, MEAT, and CRYSTALS. He’ll also confer with Sophia and Mother Niki about the offered PHARMA products to gather the human element of the research in parallel to Joe’s effort.

Seeing Joe’s consternation with Bart, he’ll remind Joe that Bart is the founder of his own company, to which our company subcontracted our services. It’s his understanding that Bart has no obligation outside of a prime-subcontractor agreement. Indeed, Barts payment for the VET job was the finders fee, not a company member profit split.

But, as a friend or colleague, we could probably enter a brokerage agreement with Bart for him or his future employees or subs to broker our trade when we are unable. He could probably become a planetary broker if Joe and DJ ever find a way to take our company back to space.
