Brother Meldred offers up his rope to us and a quick blessing to go with it. May you push the right button. Maybe the one with more dust on it?

Beya speaks up; "Well, I don't want to speak for the group; but I'd suggest the staircase over the trap"; she says jokingly....

Did the thief suspect which button was which, or just speculating in general?

Speculating in general, since the Thief is a NPC, the PC decide which button to press...

Felgorian asks the thief to identify and/or disarm the suspected trap.

I assume that is what you are hinting at. ie the pcs have to ask the npc thief to do his thieving skill, as anything he does on his own would be DM metagaming???

Coenbeorht awaits the button proceedings with impatient interest.

The thief goes "Aha," and disarms the trap on the left button, then presses the right button. The top of the alter slides open and a staircase leading down is exposed.

"I think this is the way down."

(Yes, if you want the thief to do anything, he needs to be commanded. )

"Felgorian, you lead the way." Ceric commands. "I will follow next. The rest of you, fall in line." With that, Ceric readies his sword and raises his shield in front of him. "Someone in the middle, ready a torch in case it gets dark in a hurry."

Beya does her best to stifle the sarcastic comments that spring to mind when the Thief points out the obvious in that a descending stairway leads DOWN....shocking...and just shakes her head and instead speaks up with; "Well; do one of you brave, fearless warrior types want to lead the way?"

The party goes down the stairs, and soon needs a torch or lamp to proceed.

The 10 foot wide hallway goes 40 feet north (and angled down) , then opens up into a 50x50 foot room, with a large statue in the middle. The statue is of a human male in clerical robes. There is in the center of each wall (North South, East and West) 10 foot hallways. The stone is smooth and worked, and the ceiling is around 20 feet high.

You might want to get someone to be a maptaker, and if it posted I will correct any errors i see from the description.

Felgorian will investigate the room, looking for pits, etc. He will also look to see if any of the hallways look more promising than the next, from inside the room only.

Brother Meldred will look in amazement at the room. After a few moments, he will go and inspect the statue more closely, seeing if it's been damaged in anyway or if there are any places to put offerigns.
