Sir Dewey

On the morning of the 29th, Sir Dewey makes his way over to the Mercenaries guild to inquire about a guide.

"Greetings. I am Sir Dewey. I was told that a Mr. Osen was the man to see about hiring a guide." Sir Dewey scans the area, taking note of GBH in particular.

"My companions and I are making the trek to gather spider silk and are in need of a knowledgeable guide to get us there without major incident. Do you know of such a guide? I understand that gathering silk is a regular occurrence, maybe you have someone who has done so before?

Turgen's Trade Goods

Moriartus narrows his eyes in thought as he considers Turgen's offer. After a moment he smiles and nods in agreement. "We have a deal, then. I also have no desire to extort you, good sir. Simply hedging my investment, so to speak. Although I am new in town, I intend to remain for the forseeable future. I aim to establish good business relationships and earning a nefarious reputation is of little use to me."

He moves to stand by the window again, this time gesturing towards the mercenary guild. "Mr. Osen certainly manages his affairs with a degree of military precision and discipline ... he also has a politician's ambition. I prefer dealing with a true businessman, such as yourself." He tilts his head in respect towards Turgen and offers a short salute with his cigar hand.

Moriartus then begins to genuinely browse the store's goods for provisions and supplies. "Let's see, then. I shall need three weeks of standard rations and a dozen torches." He holds up the cigar in his hand. "Oh, and a box of cigars, if you have them. A tinderbox, as well."

I'm assuming the mercenaries have waterskins. If not, he adds three of them to the order.

"What kind of hazards do your wagons usually encounter on the western trail?"

The Mercenary Guild

I think I might need more topics.

"Yes we do have guides. If a guide is all you need. You seem capable enough to deal with any issues that might arise. Solly accompanied the villagers last time. Sure he can hold the torch for you again. GBH can go wake him up for you. Just a moment."

A few minutes later, a pail of water drenched youth appears. He is belting on some ill fitting padded armour and carries a backpack stuffed with firebrand torches. "I can guide you to the tunnel webs that criss-cross the deer paths that we went to before or go to the old chalk quarry." he says, looking at his employers.

Osen, "Good lad. Keen as mustard and just as smelly. Comes from shovelling the stables out and sleeping in the hayloft."

He sorts out the paperwork to officiate the contract. "That will be 11 gold and 10 silvers Sir. This portion is the admin fee and wages, the rest is security. Bring him back, you get your ten gold back, bring him mostly back, you get most of the gold returned.

Don't bring him back and GBH gets to console his grieving mother."

who else is funding this as Sir Dewey is penniless.

The supplies can be bought at cost, page 36 of phb. The mercenaries will have canteens and skins, a new goatskin is a negligible cost.

Turgen calls it 10gp inclusive of cigars. He can send the supplies direct to the wagon, you take the pouch of cigars.

Moriartus

A rather fatigued Moriartus enters the Rosy Quartz after a whirlwind of activity since arriving in Helix. He collapses into anything resembling something that can act as a seat and appears will support his weight. "A few moments please while my muscles regain their vigor." He asks politely. After a couple minutes he produces a small bloodstone from a belt pouch. "I am interested in converting this to coin. It was appraised at fifty gold pieces in value at Ironguard Motte."

As he further relaxes, Moriartus peruses any listed services printed on pamphlets or posting boards. "And lending services ... what are your terms and rates, please?"

Moriartus enjoys the village High Street, evading the barrow boy hawkers selling cheap veg and some ragtag pilloried and cabbaged by the rotten foods.

The Pawnbroker's are signposted by a three balled monkey, (not a literal monkey with extra testicles but a traditional pawnbrokers wrought frame).

Moriartus enters hoping to add to his negotiations.

the +gp to help fund the wagon is not given to you but paid direct from Turgen to Osen.

"Fifty gold? Let me take a look." the gem is handed over and inspected, the facets studied, the opaqueness quantified.

"Fifty gold, maybe in the citadel but only desperadoes around here. If you are selling, I might give you 40gp. A fine rosy piece though just like our namesake. So 42gp to tempt your arm. If you want a buy back option, I will give you 35gp and charge you 1gp a week interest until a month is out."

He hands you a pamphlet of prices, (pg 35 phb).

Moriartus was too tired and also too ready to eat dinner, based on his odd stomach noises, to haggle a better deal. "Forty two, then. Agreed."

Moriartus

The next morning, after breakfasting on his complimentary stew at The Brazen Strumpet, Moriartus took inventory of his loose coinage and decides to bolster the supply. He reasoned it quite possible during the course of the investigation that a tongue or two may need greasing. Of course he will have the Bannerjake twins for the more direct approach, but different jobs call for different tools.

"Good morning, sir!", he begins and produces two hematites for appraisal. "How about eighteen gold for the pair?" While the gems are examined, he continues with some idle chat as he browses the shops wares. "Busy day ahead, leading an expedition into the Blackened Forest. Expect we will likely encounter a few goblinoid types ... so, may have some new customers soon looking to sell their spoils and treasure."

"I will be sure to direct them your way. I mean, such a hassle travelling to the Motte just to get a better price ..."

probably like me you played everything 10 to the pound, 1gp = 10sp = 100 co but actually the exchange rate by the book is 1gp = 20sp & 1pp = 5gp.

Dougal buys a new wineskin, made from goatskin with leather straps and horn drinking nozzle. -15sp. For the extra gold piece he offers you what looks like a large watering can made from tin with a bellows type handle.

"It is a bee smoker. Natural materials like pine needles, dried citrus peels, and dried herbs make great, long-lasting burning fuel. You can mix these ingredients with material that lights fast to get things going. Brown paper, dried deciduous leaves, small twigs, cotton, and straw work well. The smoke puts verse to sleep."

Gur Huwen looks over his customer and the gems he offers. +18gp he takes the sale price.

"Yes, yes. The more the merrier though I doubt goblin hoods are worth much. Bare trinkets and they more often than not have to be ... well you know, disinfected first.

But if you are hunting, then the forest has some ripe game. The butcher will take fresh meat, leave the head on so he knows what's what. Antlers look good over the hearth but the Hernites disapprove so. Last I heard at the village council, Lord Krothos was hearing up for a confrontation with the forest tribes. Hear some are on the warpath. Bounty might be paid per scalp but that field is only attractive to a certain type of psychopath.

Now if you ever trespassed beyond to gain their favour instead of getting your head in a spike and your arse on a spit roast, established some kind of reciprocal trade, in furs or timber for example. Well that might be worth just a bit more to his lordship and any envoys he places in office."

Dougal

"Fain. I thank ye. Just what I need for this expedition. I'll get me some tinder. There's plenty in the forest. I see you araund." He nods and goes back to the inn and then to be (the actions I described yesterday).

Dougal won't have anything else to do but sleep until the expedition kicks off.

Moriartus

He listens intently about the recent news concerning the forest tribes. That some antipathy exists between Lord Krothos and the Hernites, Moriartus was already aware. This new revelation was concerning, however, as the more violent minded tribes may attack the wagon in retaliation.

Conflict with the Hernites is, frankly, directly in conflict with the mission. The beekeeper of the Crooked Yew hives is a Hernite druid, after all. Yet, if they are successful, that might give him an inroad with the tribes to help facilitate trade and detente. Certainly could prove quite profitable and gain him some standing with Krothos.

"Thank you, Mr. Huwen," he says, collecting the gold in trade for the gemstones. "What you said is also quite interesting, indeed. Conflict of that sort is bad for business ... for the kind of business I prefer to work in, at least. I shall definitely take it under advisement. Good day, sir."

Sven
strolls through town nursing his hangover after trying to keep up with the Tenpole squires the night before. He makes his way to the money lenders hoping to get his trinkets appraised.

“Good day to you. I have a couple items here that I might be interested in parting with someday. Any chance you could give me an estimate of their worth?”

He lays the opal ring and torc on the counter for appraisal.

Market Bazaar

Orgoth

Before heading to the market, Orgoth blackens the silver of the spear good.

Orgoth locates someone who works with leather. "Hey, do make sheathes by chance? I am looking to have a quality sheath made for my spear head. The only marking on it would be the symbol of Cromm Cruach, A crown over a snow capped mountain. I will wait." He takes out 3gp and sets them in front of the craftsman.

The Rosy Quartz Jewellery and Money Lenders

May 2nd 1066

The proprietor takes out a monocle and magnifying glass to examine the two trinkets recovered from the zombies encountered in the moor.

"The torc, solid silver braids melded and twisted together, the elasticity is still okay to slip it around your neck. Hand design rather than heads. Maybe custom made for a thief rather than a chief. Worth more in the city than here, if you want to sell I would offer 60gold.

The ring, hmmm, aah, yes let's see, loose in the fold and the gold is just nine carat. Old mine cut not the royal cushion facets, characterised by a large culet here see and deep pavilion there, low crown mark."
he hums a few critiques, rather like a man buying a wagon going around kicking the wheels and complaining he prefers the 10-spoke model. Still the shock on your face as he coughs a little and whispers the amount. (pm sent)
