Re: Module 1: What Lies Beyond – Ch.1
Bigsby breaths a sigh of relief when the farmer speaks of the townies being hunkered down.
"Oh good. Some of us thought that you were all captured, or went into the hole, or worse".
"Since we are here to help, why don't we just bring all of this stuff over to the hole? I am not insinuating that it will all be used, but you never know what might come in handy in such a situation, besides, we aren't the only ones willing to help, there are others in our group as well, looking into the hole right now."
The elf takes the oil flasks, lantern, and candles for himself, while looking around for a crate or wheelbarrow to deliver the rest of the score to the site.
"If there is nothing else out of order to report, I believe our next goal is to search the area below the sinkhole. Unless there is anything else you can think of to tell us, sir?"
If the farmer is content, Bigsby will head back to the hole to see how the search there fares.

Rand helps Silky gather the lighting equipment before heading back to the tavern.

"Thanks again for your insight. These torches, lamps, and fire sticks should help us track down whatever is happening with that sinkhole."

Re: Module 1: What Lies Beyond – Ch.1
Day: Sept 9th
Time: 2:45 pm
Rand, Silky, Bigsby & the Farmer:
Rand, Silky, and Bigsby thank the farmer, ask for a bit more info, begin gathering the generously offered equipment, and head back to The Salty Tusk. (unless you decide to do something else)
John, always eager and happy to converse about any number of subjects, offers Bigsby some of his thoughts on the situation: “Nothing of importance to tell you I’m afraid. I imagine Werner gave you his speech about the rumors. Of Ferros Winhammer and his keep up on the hill? His grandfather, I’m sure he told you, he tells everyone, was believed to be crazy. Not everyone is so skeptical as Werner though. Some of us believe the legends, the keep is proof to some degree, and the seaport with the moving carts too. I think he called them lifters, to bring men from the surface down to sea level, and goods like fish back up. It still works today, as you probably know. You’ve heard the legends no doubt. Every kid has. Well, many a young man has searched that keep and found nothing. But some of us think there’s a secret door, or something like that, in there. Even without those crazy tales of adventure, just look at the feat of engineering of the seaport lifts. I tell you, if he built those lifts, he most certainly would have hidden an entrance to secret tunnels and a treasure hoard. There’s no telling what he did under that keep, no telling. Yep, I, and a good lot of other folk, believe there’s an entrance to whatever is below that keep. Just going to take someone smarter than us common folk to find it and open it. Either way, I hope you young lads can help us with this critter problem. We are some kind of anxious to get life back to normal. If you do, I can speak for the whole village in saying you all will be honored and welcome here anytime. Free room and board. Yep. We will be most thankful.
A huge smile crosses John’s face briefly, then returns to the previous tired, serious, and worried look.
You all let me know if you need anything else, anything at all. And if you need help from Werner, and he gets stubborn with you, just come call on me, and I will talk some sense into him. I can usually bring him around, especially when it comes to bettering the village and our neighbors.
Equipment Obtained from Farmer John
Tore, Christian, Denny descend into the darkness
Tore, Denny, and Christian tie off two ropes and descend into the darkness of the sink hole to retrieve the body and survey the lay of the land, while Bowb sets about preparing for the deceased man’s funeral. Before he sets off, Bowb asks Denny to:
Please identify the marching (er…rope climbing) order and any actions you intend to take. Detail as much as you like. The more info you give me, the better able I am to adjudicate the results. I will do a quick follow-up with a map and description of the environment at the bottom of the sink hole. Remember, you can do and detail anything you can think of. If it's way outside the realm of possibility I will tell you the potential consequences, otherwise I will adjudicate accordingly
Actions!

Bowb will most certainly run into the other party on thier way back to The Salty Tusk, in his search for digging implements. He could also inquire of the Farmer (after conversing with the party members who spoke to him) about a proper burial place. If he so chooses."glean something important with regard to the tunnels. Christian heads down to investigate the ruined timbers and the corpse, hoping to assess what can be done to shore up the tunnel and free the body trapped therein.

Re: Module 1: What Lies Beyond – Ch.1
Bigsby bows low to the farmer before leaving.
On his way back to the tavern, the elf thinks to himself that this area would make a perfect place to stage their explorations from. Especially if they can stay and eat for free all the time.
"I hope we are successful in our search down there. Maybe we will be the first ones to find this secret passage under the keep he was talking about? Wouldn't that be exciting?"
The mixologist enters the Tusk again, looking around to see how much progress has been made so far. Once it becomes his turn on the rope, he follows the others down into the mysterious sinkhole.
Not entirely sure who already went down the rope, but Bigs is happy to go somewhere between next and last.

Silky
"A free place to stay and eat? Sign me up! And did you hear about that keep? Maybe we could clean that place up, doesn't sound like anyone's using it."
Silky entertains thoughts again of a glorious parade and cheers of his name.
As he enters the Tusk and deposits the pile of equipment he calls down the hole. "Hey! We're back, and we've got stuff!" Silky takes the parang and the knife and shrugs. "I don't know how tight it is down there. I may need to fight up close."
Silky takes the time to stretch and prepare for a hunt, checking his gear and tools. "After you guys. I'll be fine getting down by myself."

Tore descends the rope with ease and demonstrates a confidence of someone who has worked on sailing vessels since his youth. He glides to the water's surface wondering aloud to his recovery party, "Let's see if any of this is stable enough ta stand on, eh?"DexterWard wrote: ↑Sun Dec 06, 2020 3:26 am

Tore dangles his feet above any debris within reach to gradually test it before placing his entire weight. He maintains a secure grasp on the rope with one hand and releases the rope with the other hand. He raises his free hand to the others to assist their arrival with whispers of assurance, "Slowly down, lads, slowly down - you'll make fine shipmates one day." He glances back to the corpse and comments, "Looks like we may need ta pry the poor man out."
What light sources illuminate the bottom of the hole and what is visible? Is the water's depth discernable?

Re: Module 1: What Lies Beyond – Ch.1
It is early afternoon with a cloudless sky. Unless you have a torch lit you will only have ambient sunlight from the sky shining down into the sinkhole. At that time of day you will be able to see well enough, and most likely a short distance down each tunnel, let's say 15'. I wouldn't think you would need to light torches just yet unless something changes.
The water in the tunnels is muddy, you think most likely from rainwater seeping into the sinkhole under the Tavern (before it collapsed), So until you touch down you won't know for sure. However, based on the timbers and the trapped body, you might estimate a couple of feet deep.
I will adjudicate exactly what you see, smell, and hear in my next post, in response to everyone's posts.
The timber debris in the tunnel, from the tavern floor and roof, seems sturdy enough to hold everyone's weight.

'Denny'
From the list of equipment he would take with him the hooded lantern and a weapon. The parang would serve as a good hacking short sword in his hand.
A couple of feet of water is waist high to me. He ties his beard into his belt and descends into the pit. He will help assess the structure around the body and explore a little down the eastern tunnel. Maybe other sinkholes will be being gashed out under other village dwellings.

Re: Module 1: What Lies Beyond – Ch.1
Day: Sept 9th
Time: 2:45 pm
Tore, Christian, Denny, Bigsby, and Silky Descend to Recover the Cook’s Body
Tore, first down one of the two ropes, tests the timbers for stability and guides the rest of the party down into the darkness. The timbers prove secure and stable enough to support the party. The smell of fresh mud seeps up from the surface of the water and mixes with that of the hardwood timbers, now broken and cracked in a heap. The water must have filled the tunnel very recently; otherwise molds and fungus would have taken over, giving the tunnel a rank odorous stench. The sun, high in the sky, seems to provide ample light for working, as well as visibility some 15’ down each tunnel.
Tunnel Junction
After testing the footing of the pile of timbers, Christian and Denny make quick work surveying the heaped pile of timbers and surrounding tunnel openings. Some of the upper most timbers, above the water line, have chew marks, similar to those Christian saw up above on the Tusk floor timbers. There is no sign of the fat white ants, but the chewed timbers are a clear sign they are still active. Testing a few timbers, it is clear that two or three men will be able to clear enough to retrieve the cook’s body in about 15 minutes. The tunnel walls show clear signs of man-made tool marks. Moving about the tunnel in the water reveals rail tracks running up and down each tunnel. This space was clearly a mine of some sort at one time.
An inspection of the sinkhole above, as well as the tunnel roof, reveals the ceiling is still caving in and will continue to do so, ultimately threatening the The Salty Tusk. The rock above seems solid enough, but it could be as soon as days or perhaps weeks before another section of the Tusk caves in. It is hard to say. However, Christian and Denny, the carpenter and blacksmith, believe they could use the fallen timbers to shore up the tunnel roof and walls of the sinkhole in such a way that would afford the Tusk a bit more time. That would give the village time to fashion a more permanent solution to support the Tusk or rebuild on another plot. Either way the work would take a few days to a week, depending on the number of laborers involved and the proper tools, which would most likely be supplied by the surrounding villages.
North Tunnel
Enough daylight reveals a second side tunnel, similar to the east and west tunnels, that runs off to the east, roughly 10’ to the north of the junction.
South Tunnel
Looking down the south tunnel reveals a soft steady purple glow, the source of which cannot be determined. It appears to be a good distance away, perhaps 30' appearing small in nature.
On the east wall of the tunnel there is a kind of mud tube attached to the wall, roughly 2” in diameter, which appears to be made of a mixture of wood fibers and mud. The tube runs south, a few inches above and parallel to the surface of the water, away from the junction of the four tunnels. It looks similar to the mud tubes made by crawfish you saw as kids along stream banks. A soft burble of water can be heard coming from the far end of the tunnel.
East Tunnel
Once Denny completes his survey of the timbers and immediate surroundings, he makes a quick survey of the East tunnel while the others begin freeing the cook’s body. The sunlight from above is enough to see about 15’ down the tunnel, thereafter it becomes dark. Lighting the hooded candle lantern, graciously provided by the John the farmer, gives Denny 30’ of visibility. Traveling 15’-20’ down the tunnel reveals only more darkness a dead end. His survey of the tunnel reveals a crack beginning to form on the roof of the tunnel. It’s jagged sharp edges hint that it may have formed very recently. At the moment though it is only a centimeter or two wide in places, and only runs about 15’ from the tunnel junction.
West Tunnel
The west tunnel is very similar to the east tunnel, running out into darkness.

Rand stays up top to provide assistance in retrieval of the body as needed, and backup in case something goes wrong down below.
Retrieving the Cook’s Body
Bigsby and Silky assist Tore and Christian while Denny surveys the east tunnel. The Party makes quick work of removing timbers, and the cook’s body comes free with ease. That’s when Silky notices the marks on the man’s chest. Big sucker-like marks, roughly 2” in diameter, with many tiny puncture marks around the perimeter. A moment later Tore sees movement in the water near the body and a giant leech-like creature, 2’ long and 4” thick, breaks the surface and heads straight for Silky - its dark, slimy, undulating, bulbous body gliding smoothly through the muddy water.
Bowb Goes in Search of a Burial Plot & Runs into the Farmer:
Bowb, setting out to secure a burial plot and see about preparing a proper liturgy and rite of committal for the cook, runs into the John the farmer watching as the party returns to the Tusk with armfuls of supplies.
“Ah, hello there. You must be with those other fellows, what did they call themselves, adventurers? We are most glad of the help. This village is a might piece troubled over those strange creatures, and for certain the damage of the Tusk! Suck a right fine mess I tell you. Anywho, what can I do you for? I gave those other fellas a heap of tools and supplies. Are you in need of more?
Farmer Inventory
I have identified character names after items that have been taken so far. Silky took the Parang and Knife initially, so I gave Denny the 14” Cleaver. Maybe the two of you can discuss a trade? Please let me know if anyone else takes one of the items and I’ll add their name below. I divided things up a bit based on overlapping posts. feel free to discuss how you want to divy up in the OOC thread if you like, or role play it here in this thread after the action has been finalized with the creature.

Silky
He sees the leech, too late to do anything but exclaim "Ahhhh!"
He intends to bring up both blades and strike at the leech. If it is attached, he will try to slice it off. While screaming "Oh gods, oh gods, not my crotch!"
Attack: [1d20] = 18 Damage: [1d6] = 1
Attack: [1d20] = 1 Damage: [1d6] = 4
A good start. And entirely predictable.

Bigsby panics slightly at the sight of the oncoming creature, but only for a moment.
"I believe we have sorted out what has made these holes in the mud and the marks on the body."
Without hesitation, the elf unstoppers one of the borrowed oil flasks and tosses the liquid in the direction of the attacking slug, hoping it is repulsed by the foreign mixture.
Thrown Item [1d20+1] = 7+1 = 8
Depending on how much oil actually hits the creature, Bigs calls for any nearby open flames to be applied to it.

I will take the candles and hooded candle lanterns and pork cleaver. Inventory adjusted
The dwarf assesses the end of the tunnel. Poking at the cracking may very well bring the roof down and another collapse. Maybe further in the cracking, little bugs munch away. He decides to leave the dead end and rejoin the others at the cross section.
"If you keep still I will chop at that little maggot wriggling around your loins." he says, threatening to wield the cleaver for some chopping.

Christian whips out his shortbow and, squinting in the dim light, waits for a clear shot at the slimey creature. The second the opportunity presents itself, he lets fly.

Bowb chuckles. Adventurers? Ho ho, that word is a bit generous I believe. I think we are fine for tools but if we need more, you will just the man to seek, eh? Ah, there is the body of some poor soul down in the hole and I'm looking for a place to place his mortal remains for his eternal rest. Perhaps you can help with this? A place to bury him? A young man or two to help with the digging perhaps?DexterWard wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 6:07 am Bowb Goes in Search of a Burial Plot & Runs into the Farmer:
Bowb, setting out to secure a burial plot and see about preparing a proper liturgy and rite of committal for the cook, runs into the John the farmer watching as the party returns to the Tusk with armfuls of supplies.
“Ah, hello there. You must be with those other fellows, what did they call themselves, adventurers? We are most glad of the help. This village is a might piece troubled over those strange creatures, and for certain the damage of the Tusk! Suck a right fine mess I tell you. Anywho, what can I do you for? I gave those other fellas a heap of tools and supplies. Are you in need of more?

Tore startles as the sickening creature approaches Silky and considers how he can help the others defend Silky with Bigsby interposing between him. Tore removes a torch from his backpack and scrambles higher on the pile of rubble to manueuver around Bigsby, towards Silky. Tore intended to attack the creature with his torch. If Tore can move across the rubble to reach Silky with enough time to attack the creature, I understand and am satisfied even if Tore joins the melee last. If there is enough time to light his torch, he attacks primarily as a source of fire to ignite Denny's oil. If not enough time to light the torch, then he uses the torch primarily as a light bludgeoning weapon.DexterWard wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 6:07 am Retrieving the Cook’s Body
...Tore sees movement in the water near the body and a giant leech-like creature, 2’ long and 4” thick, breaks the surface and heads straight for Silky - its dark, slimy, undulating, bulbous body gliding smoothly through the muddy water.
improvised attack with torch as lightweight club [1d20+1] = 16+1 = 17, damage [1d3+1] = 3+1 = 4

Antoine de Saint-Exupery: “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”

Rand, standing at the top of the sinkhole, hears yells echoing through the tunnel. He shouts down the tunnel:
Is everything OK?
He doesn't hear a response. He readies his handaxe and climbs down into the sinkhole.
He follows the tunnel, hearing the rest of the groups voice getting louder and louder until... he sees it: A slimy... long thing, with what appears to be pus oozing out of its mouth.
My god. That thing is disgusting, Rand thinks to himself.
He runs next to Christian and takes a swing.
To hit: [1d20] = 8; Damage with handaxe: [1d6] = 5

Giant Mud Leech (Tiny – 2’ long, 4” thick)
The mud leech, having been disturbed from his succulent meal, lashes out at the nearest disturber.
Mud Leech: Bite & Latch Att [1d20] = 4, Dmg [1d4] = 1

Bowb and the Farmer:
Bowb encounters John the farmer enroute to secure a proper resting place for the cook…”Oh dear” John says as he shakes his head. “I wonder if it’s the cook or the souphand? I recon it don’t matter much. Either way they deserve proper burials. John looks off into the distant north, his brows furrowed. He swallows hard before turning back to Bowb, his eyes seem to have moistened. “Tobias was a good friend. The souphand, Henry, has only been with us a short while, so I could only say for him that he was a kind man. We shall morn when all is done. Ay, we have a place for the dead. Come with me, we shall see call on William and Ferdinand to help with the preparations.” As John walks he rambles on…”We have always used the crypts here in Windham. As you may well know yourself, this land eats at the corpses, quicker than most I suppose. Something in the soil mayhap. The Alchemist at Braywater says it’s, hmmm, basic Vulcan…what did he call it…vulcanlogy perhaps. Something of that sort. Anywho, he says the water mixes with ancient chemicals in the ground, and it erodes everything…” John rambles on about farming and other village matters of no importance.
John takes Bowb to a couple of houses to enlist the help of William and Ferdinand. They are both quiet and solemn. John tells Bowb they are laborers mostly, taking odd jobs here and there for anyone who needs help; mostly paid in supplies or favors. Good men overall, but common for sure…During the next turn John will show Bowb the crypt where the cook is to be interred.
Tunnel Junction
Down below The Salty Tusk, the situation evolves quickly with the Cook’s body…Out of nowhere a Giant Mud Leech attacks Silky. The party apparently disturbed it’s succulent easy meal. The leech lashes out at Silky, undulating through the water, its slick dark grey body gliding effortlessly. Startled by Silky’s screech Ahhhh! Oh gods, oh gods, not my crotch!, the leech is unable to get a taste of his soft groin flesh…
Christian, quick on the draw, fires an arrow true and straight. It pierces the Leech mid-body and skewers it into a nearby timber, just inches from Silky’s leg. Silky brings his two blades (Parang and butcher knife) down swiftly, in a gut-punch reaction to potential groin pain. The Parang hits true, slicing a nice gash in the side of the creature. The blade of the 14” butcher knife sinks into a nearby timber with a thud and sticks stubbornly.
While Bigsby unstoppers a flask of oil to douse on the leech, and potentially set afire, the rest of the party closes in and finishes the creature off. Denny comes back from his scout of the east tunnel mid-fight and waves his long-handled pork cleaver, threatening the dead creature with violence should it come back to life. Rand arrives in time to see the Giant Leech oozing body fluids into the murky water. There isn’t much left for him to attack.
As the party breathes a sigh of relieve and get their wits about them, Tore notices something new among the timbers. The timbers shifted slightly during his attack on the Giant Mud Leech, and apparently dislodged a second body. A foot and calf protrude from the pile of timbers, the toes of which, sticking straight up, all pruney and bloated a tad from being submerged.

NOTES:
- Christians quick arrow made things much easier for the party.
- Bigsby can stopper the oil and save it
- Christian can attempt to retrieve the arrow if he wishes. The wood will have been softened from being in the water. Roll 1d6 (1-3 Broken; 4-6 recoverable).
- You’ll want to manage resources closely. You never know when the situation might become dire

Denny
The shifting timbers could shift more if we drag the bodies to hasty. He has a horrible though that the toe and calf might be all there is ...
He doesn't want to be wading thigh deep in dirty waters too long. How flooded are the other tunnels? While the cook is taken to the surface, he will check out the northern tunnel and the branch leading off.
