It's a Star Trek reference. The extras who get killed in TOS episodes always seem to be wearing red shirts.

See holes in ceiling that provide illumination.
PCs start peering through the holes.
The idea comes up that the PCs should climb out said holes and explore outside.
DM cursing under his breath. Damn players always ruining the game.
