Bertram will beckon the group to pass him a new torch and then throw one into the room to illuminate as much as possible.
Get ready to run
Get ready to run
Re: Expedition - Quirin/Dwarves II - 5 April, 1 VC
Bertram tosses the torch twenty feet or so, arcing it through the air toward the right side of the char pile based on his recollection of things.
Torch goes out on 1-2 [1d6] = 2
It curves up and out and seems to illuminate something vaguely humanoid near the edge of the char pile, pale and hunched over on the ground, that looks up toward the party with sightless eyes, as the torch is blown out by the force of its movement. The still of the darkness is rent with a piercing, inhuman shriek.

I'm imagining the situation similarly. It's hard to know what to expect when your scope of knowledge is so small.

Buryl shoots his knocked arrow in the direction that he thinks he saw the horrible creature.
Longbow [1d20+1] = 6+1 = 7 Damage [1d8] = 5
Hopefully he runs into it?

Funny. When I was imagining the job of "runner", I was picturing the end of Aliens 3.Keehnelf wrote:I'm imagining the situation similarly. It's hard to know what to expect when your scope of knowledge is so small.
"RUN!!" Bertram yells as he starts to bolt for the exit.
Re: Expedition - Quirin/Dwarves II - 5 April, 1 VC
Quirin runs.
Re: Expedition - Quirin/Dwarves II - 5 April, 1 VC
Hearing Bertram's shout, Galen and flees, adding his own voice to the warrior's to make sure all his companions hear.
In case I need it, I rolled a Con check...now I'm hoping I don't
Legging it (9): [1d20] = 16

Krysta is ready to bolt anyway, and when Bertram yells to run, she screams (like a girl...duh!), and runs for her life!

When Buryl sees everyone bolt, he runs too!!!
Re: Expedition - Quirin/Dwarves II - 5 April, 1 VC
Since Buryl is firing an arrow first, he's the one in the foot race with the monster: CON check for him, please!

Con check (13) [1d20] = 14
Do we add the +1 modifier?
Guess I should not have listened to this post if everyone was just going to run?

I paid attention to this one, personally.
We hadn't even found Crivit's body yet...no need to stand and fight to defend what we haven't got. And when the torch went out...I didn't figure we'd shoot blind, and I can't turn if I can't see the monster and it see us.
But I hate to abandon a comrade, be it Crivit or you. If Galen sees Buryl is falling behind, he will stop and try to turn. We've been dropping torches, surely Buryl can make it into the light of one of them before being overtaken?
Turn Undead: [2d6] = 8

Now that it's been chasing us, can we see if its one or more than one shape in pursuit? Bertram will hazard a glance back when he passes Buryl

Abi turns and runs at top speed. She doesn't want to get trampled by her fleeing comrades.

April 13, 1 VC - 11:10am
Round One:
Nearly everyone in the party turns to run at the sight of the creature, as Buryl fires his mocked arrow into the darkness where it was spotted. The thing's piercing shriek drowns out any other sounds for a brief moment, preventing him from telling if the arrow struck true or not. The scream is more one of rage and hunger than of pain. The burly fighter turns to run, and makes it into the light of the last dropped torch before he stumbles a bit.
At that moment, Galen, who has stopped to help protect Buryl's retreat, sees a single pale form leap into the ring of torchlight and land against Buryl's back, slashing at him with long, razor-sharp claws and attempting to bite at his arm.
The creature is dwarf-sized in height, but gaunt and stretched looking, with pale greyish-white skin and nearly naked, only the barest scraps of cloth clinging to its flesh. Mangy patches of short, unevenly shorn beard cling to its skull-like head. It moves with uncanny speed, in a frenzy of rage and bloodlust, and its white and sightless eyes, so like an underground fish's, roll and loll about in its head as it throws itself against Buryl, grunting and gasping.
So far, his heavy armor seems to have protected the man, but the creature is continuing and even redoubling its assault. And the piercing cry is echoed from other throats deeper within the complex...
Galen raises his holy symbol, in clear sight of the monstrous thing, invoking the power of his deity: again, there is a brief flash of light, but the creature seems undeterred.
Actions and initiative!
Galen is fifteen feet from Buryl. The rest of the party are in the marching order (reversed), with Bertram the closest, about twenty feet further along the tunnel past Galen.

Quirin will turn and nock an arrow. He'll hold off on firing into melee, looking to attack any other undead that come into view.
Zombie rd 1 initiative [1d6] = 1
We need to keep moving or we'll all be dead pretty soon. Gotta finish that dwarf zombie fast. On a related note, don't let me roll initiative anymore.

Buryl always gets autocorrected to Butyl on my phone, which was especially funny when you guys were talking about risking entering the fire...KingOfCowards wrote:Now that it's been chasing us, can we see if its one or more than one shape in pursuit? Re: Expedition - Quirin/Dwarves II - 5 April, 1 VC
Are we able to execute a fighting withdrawal i.e. backing up (half movement rate) while still attacking?
Bertram draws his sword to help Buryl defend himself.
Attack with Longsword: [1d20+1] = 11+1 = 12 Damage: [1d8+1] = 6+1 = 7

Hearing the guttural screams behind her, and seeing Galen turn to help, Krysta turns as well, quelling enough of her fear to raise her holy symbol.
