“What you choose to do about it, well not so much.
… More than anything else,” Sophia concluded “you have reached a crossroad. You can still walk away and pretend it was just something you imagined and live a normal life. Once you cross over into KNOWING … I mean experientially … the truth, the door to a normal life in a normal world closes forever. So you should choose carefully which world you want to live in.”
Mick is rocked on his heels by the self-stirring floating tea dishes at first, but then finds it entertaining. He listens intently and considers for a few moments.
”Well, Spohia, I’m not entirely sure how just how much choice I actually have in this matter. The metaphysical, uh, talents seem to have a way of finding me when needed. But they’ve also quite embedded themselves into my thoughts. I can certainly tell you I ain’t just going to be able pretend not to notice them, pretend it never happened. Plus, it was exhilarating to experience them…scary, thrilling, effective, and meaningful all at the same time. I don’t think I can just let that go knowing there are answers for it all. That you have answers.

The city and I have never gotten along. I avoid urban places just as much as I possibly can. Filled with dependent urbanite consumers they are, not producers. No self-sufficiency. Loud, crowded, and stinky. Nah, I’d rather be out on the water, out in the outback, or someplace like here. I only take those dependent urbanite “children” on trips out to real life ‘cause they pay real well.

Basic training huh? Ya can teach me? By the way, cool tricks ya can play!”
he says with a wink.

DJ

DJ smiles at Christine "I don't mean to be rude or anything, but that sounds fine if you're from one of the clans where the more respected warrior type skills are available, like Red or Black, what what about the other clans where that's not the case?"

DJ: “what about the other clans where that's not the case?"

Christine shrugged “So what Clan were you born into? It seems you managed to acquire a weapon and cold weather clothing without a Red or Black Clan to support you.” She glanced at Marcel [you suspected that she had figured out the source of your questions and the question behind your question ] even as she spoke softly to DJ “Within a Clan like the Red Clan, competition to stand out and be recognized is fierce. It has been my personal observation that what matters more than Clan or even skill … is the fire in your belly. Those that wait to be invited typically spend all their time waiting. Those that attack their goal as something that NOBODY will stop them from achieving lay hold of whatever it is that they seek.” She paused briefly “With or without the Clan’s blessing. A hunter, hunts. Nobody can stop someone from hunting. … Nobody.”

Christine spoke to DJ, but stared at Marcel “I bet that from the top of the dome you can see everything within 20 kilometers in any direction. A hunter with a scope only dreams of that sort of vantage point to shoot from. Hard to argue with results, like a hunter with a few predator kills to his account. Funny what setbacks are advantages in disguise.” Christine shrugged and finished her drink.

DJ

DJ replies "And so the problem becomes the individual and not the system. That seems convenient, particularly if the person is actively prevented from having any opportunity by the system and it's proponents"

He stands "If you'll excuse me, we have to go and fix the vital piece of equipment that keeps your hunters, and therefore your families, alive. Then I can be on my way."

He nods at Marcel and heads back to the beacon.

Mick: “By the way, cool tricks ya can play!” he says with a wink.

Sophia smiled “The universe is my dance partner. We move together and respond to one another … sort of like a ballet. I always felt the draw, but it took a lot of time and effort to learn to dance gracefully.”

Sophia taught Mick how to relax and breathe. She said that this was the first thing he needed to work on. Mastering control of himself. The exercises were all about learning to concentrate by becoming more self-aware and pushing all external stimuli out of your mind. Only your breath and the act of existing filled your thoughts. Mick found it similar to the peacefulness of being completely alone in the remote wilderness … that state of total relaxation where you almost feel more aware than when you are listening … and wake feeling more refreshed than any night’s sleep.

She told Mick that he needed to practice just breathing and being. She smiled … “Yeah, I know. I felt the same way when they told me that’s how I needed to start my training.”

Mick was surprised how quickly the time had passed. Sophie told you to practice at least 3 hours a day and to let her know when you were ready to begin your intensive training. Once started, it could not be interrupted. “... But I am always here.” she said with a smile as she cleaned up the tea and went to close the Council Chamber for the day.

Mick Hogan replies:
”That would be a fun dance to learn. Perhaps you can teach me?” and departs.

He goes to secure long-term quarters in St Oyland. Once his personal things are there, he spends some time practicing relaxation and breathing control techniques Sophia taught him.

At dinner that night Mick tells his friends:
”Remember the stories I told, rather sheepishly, of weird things happening to me? I may be finding answers as to what that was all about. I’m going to stay here a little longer and explore this potential education.

I can catch up to you in the Colony at some point in the future, if ya want to. I just don’t know exactly when that will be. Mind if I keep the Snow Cat for those times I want to go out hunting while I’m here? I’ll either fly it to the Colony or sell it here and share the proceeds when I leave.

Thoughts?”

He’ll practice after dinner and again in the morning, get some exercise, see his friends and associates off on the plane, and find a shop where he can get the minor modifications to the ATV. He'll also check on the status of his order for a 9mm Mag revolver, 9mm Lever-Action iron-site rifle, and his Northern Edge equivalent of a sniper rifle. Then he'll practice his relaxation and breathing techniques again in ever increasingly distracting environments. That afternoon he’ll bring her favorite tea as he reports back to Sophia stating:

”I’m back. I’m staying for the duration. Looking to learn to dance and talk without speaking, and all that. For the duration. However long that is.

Please be my dance instructor?.”

**Edited**
Looks like Joe is staying now, so might have to change the approach to Sophie.

Throughout training, Joe will try to get to know Sophie. Why is she stay hiding here...after all, the Aboriginals in the outback have some mystical powers...plenty of places to avoid the entanglement of authorities out on Beau. Does she have any interest in leaving. Truth be told, Mick is quite impressed with her at first...as he gets to know her, he'll be really interested in discovering her personal character.

DJ

Once the beacon is fixed (assuming he can), then DJ wants to return to the plane and get it ready to leave St Oyland as soon as possible. Once the plane is ready he will let the others know.

(This may be occurring before the evening meal, depending on how long the beacon takes, or if he has to leave earlier because he has upset the locals)

DJ and Marcel were suited up and back on the peak of the dome to resolve the intermittent electrical issue with the COMM/NAV beacon. The intermittent nature of the problem made locating and confirming repairs a long, tedious process. Twice the issue seemed resolved, until repeated tests revealed another intermittent failure. After 2.5 hours, the third repeated test still showed no errors. At 1700, the job was marked “complete”. The Comm Beacon should be good for another ten years … well, maybe 5 under the harsh Arctic conditions.

DJ went looking for HOT coffee and enjoyed the hot cup in cold fingers as much as the warm liquid in cold inners. Checking his HandCom, DJ found Cr1000 deposited from the Saint Oyland City Council for “Repair Services”. Not a bad day's wages.
Average task [8+] … REPAIR check [8+] for Elec … check per hour until pass:
ROLL = [3] +2 = 5 … fail ELEC repair
ROLL = [4] +2 = 6 … fail ELEC repair
ROLL = [11] +2 = 13 … extreme success ELEC repair … Repair in 1/2 hour.

It is 9PM ... DJ is free to have supper and leave in the morning or leave tonight and be in Brulantfort (the Colony) by morning. No issues either way, your preference. A brief note on the Group Crawler ... it is too big for the Airplane. The plane can transport smaller vehicles (like a 1 ton Pickup size) and the new Crawler is more like a 10 ton delivery truck size. That will make it more useful in the long term, but less transportable at the moment. There are Grav Aircraft that CAN transport it ... this just isn't one of them. This is a smaller transport for remote freight to rough areas.

DJ

By the end of the repair DJ has calmed down a little. He says to Marcel "I hope I haven't made things worse for you. Think about what I've said. I'll give you my comms info in case you decide to try something different."

Later, while enjoying the coffee DJ checks the weather forecast.

If the weather will be OK tomorrow then he will leave in the morning and travel during the day, but if there is bad weather due tomorrow then he will travel tonight. It sounds like Mick should keep the ATV and travel back with it when he's done.

I will plan for Mick to do a long overland trek in the ATV carrying back anything you want to leave with me. Not sure Mick would want to be responsible for gear/weapons the former PCs and NPCs we won’t interact with again. But he’ll take anything Joe or DJ want. Just tell me what you’re leaving with me.

Mick is going to need a long-term power source, like a fusion reactor pack, that can recharge the ATV in the middle of nowhere. Preferably 2 to be certain of harsh environment redundancy.

He’ll probably plan on driving the 2000km to the unnamed village of the Planetary Map North of Brulantfort that sits on the edge of both the Arctic and the ocean….about 10 days travel? From there, he’d plan to seek passage on a big boat the rest of the way.

From the sound of the situation at the colony 'airport', DJ is happy to take with him the revolver and snub pistol and the ammo for them and leave the rifles and shotgun (and ammo) for Mick to bring. He has no skill in the latter and really brought them for the group. We have the money to charter a bigger plane to pick Mick and the ATV up if you want.

If we charter a plane, we don’t have to keep the ATV. Sell it here, or gift it. We were previously planning on having Bart ID the man. If we determined a surviving family was in need, we didn’t to claim salvage rights.

I forget AT, was this ATV severe cold designed? Why did the former owner freeze inside of it, and it powered off only to restart for us? Was that a function of the extreme blizzard?

We have a few days to figure it all out, I think.

Y2156.11.10:1600 - Brulantfort Airfield (DJ)
DJ handed the keys for the Bushplane to its owners and climbed aboard the rented truck to escort his supplies back to the rented unit at “The Colony” [26] (Bed and Breakfast).

Last night, Joe had seemed reluctant to stay in Saint Oyland - wondering out loud if Mick had lost his mind. However, a sleepless night wondering if all this talk about Psions might be real eventually got the better of him ['roll=12']. In the morning, Joe helped DJ load the plane and whispered that he had to find out for himself … one way or the other. With that Joe and Mick remained in Saint Oyland as everyone else climbed aboard the plane.

No sooner had DJ touched down than everyone disappeared. Some, like Herbie and Olivia, just went home to their tents - the Colony was their home and they were home. Others, like Valencia Meridian and Captain James Daniels had had their fill of “adventure” and returned to the comfort of their well placed families and family connections.

DJ arrived at the rental and stashed his arsenal. With a wry thought, DJ realized he was quickly fitting right in with the crazy locals that formed the Colony. Just as DJ sat there, feeling completely alone … shades of the Dawson family curse playing in the back of his mind … there was a knock at the door.

Bartholomew “Bart” Tobit: “That was fun! So do you have any plans for what our NEXT adventure will be?”

DJ glanced down at the table. Valencia had left her contract with the group. It had taken four days and those goods had a firm delivery deadline. Then there were all the other business opportunities that the group had left hanging. Bart suggested that dinner might be the place to start.

“Home cooking at ‘Building 12’ (Bar & Diner) [12] or Surf and Turf at the fancy Restaurant [11]. My treat on your commission.” Bart said with a smile.
