Quest #8 "Bring Me The Sea Monsters Head"
Re: Quest #8 "Bring Me The Sea Monsters Head"
Luther
Luther snatches his harpoon from the sand and sprints toward Scraggly, circling around to the seaward side- out of the troll's reach. He snarls and growls in full 'bear man' mode as he thrusts the harpoon into the monster's side.
attack [1d20] = 13 Plus 'in the net' bonus. I'm blind and couldn't find it.
[1d8] = 3
When the harpoon is firmly in the troll's torso, Luther drops the butt end and puts a foot on it, intending to keep Scraggly in place.

I seem to recall OM saying that, as long as the troll is down in the net, a 13 or better will hit.Urson wrote:Luther

The Ebbs And Flows Of Deadly Combat
Sunday, 28th of Reaping
Taking Down Mean Green, Round 2
Noon, Sunny, Humid, Buggy
With sand flying in every direction and the monsters roars echoing on the breeze, the party presses their advantage while they still can.
Saracen can barely make out his target through the thick red mist that is slowly dissipating on the soft warm sea breezes. He gets his spell off and the area directly behind the head of the huge monster lights up slightly in the already bright sunlight.
Chauncey has similar luck when his sandy simulacrum rushes forth and embraces the troll, but does absolutely nothing whatsoever to sedate its intense fury. The stymied mage hears the voice of his overbearing mother somewhere inside of his psyche. "You foolish child! You should know not to mess with high level monsters using low level magic!"
Avaala calls for the pikes to be used as he quickly chucks 2 daggers at the flailing mass in the net from a safe distance. He is satisfied when he detects 2 more grunts of pain emanate from the stinky cloud of acidic mist.
Lightfinger gets himself a safe distance from the poisonous air and the furious monsters flailing appendages. He successfully slings a steel bullet into the rubbery flesh of the trapped troll.
Alordan continues firing his arrows at the monster before it can free itself. His next two arrows find their target as the ranger remembers back to the horrors of his last battle with this intimidating foe.
Monocar spins his large metal hook around over his head. Having never used a tethered hook as a weapon before, it misses its mark completely and flies harmlessly over the top of the net, nearly getting snagged in the pulling ropes attached to the net.
Seeing the beast trying to escape, Luther rushes around to the opposite side of the net. His eyes and throat burn badly when he gets closer to the dissipating vapors, but he continues on anyway. Rushing up to the net, he stabs his harpoon into the mass just as it tears through the last few strands of net, allowing the beast to stand up to its full frightening height. Luther knows that he won't be able to hold the much larger monster alone, and worse yet, it has torn itself free of enough of the fraying ropes that it will soon be able to unleash its deadly attacks on the overly hairy ranger.

Saracen[\b] leaves the security of the woods and makes his way around the acidic area around the net trap. He intends to stand between the troll and the sea, two handed sword at the ready. He wants to stand half way between the net and the ocean.

Re: Quest #8 "Bring Me The Sea Monsters Head"
Alordan'sface is grim. The trap seems to have done it's job in temporarily halting the big bastard. What more could we have hoped for, really? Sword in hand he attacks the beast, from behind if necessary, to stop it's retreat to the sea. It's now or never...
Long Sword Attack [1d20] = 12 (THACO=20)
Long Sword Damage(+1 str/+2 vs. troll) = S/M: [1d8+1] = 4+3 = 7 / L: [1d12+3] = 9+3 = 12

Shoot this ruttin' bastard! SHOOT IT!! Luther's shout is a roar of fury as the beast breaks loose.
Seeing no better option, he grabs the haft of the harpoon, pushing and twisting it in the initial wound.

Avaala
Understanding his physical limitations, Avaala does NOT get between the troll and the water. However, he does attack from the flank with his 8' staff,
Attack with Staff [1d20] = 16
Damage from Staff, Any Size Creature [1d6] = 2
while calling Rollo into the fray, seeing that the worst of the acid has dissipated. "Rollo, ATTACK!"
Attack from Rollo, 2+2 Hit Dice [1d20] = 17
Damage from Rollo [2d4] = 7
And THIS is why I made sure to make that staff 8' long. Don't want to get too close!

you’re still within the ten foot reach of melee combat foes. That staff would need to be double for you to be any safer than anyone else me thinks.

I am ok with someone thinking that a long stick is going to save them from an attack by a 10 foot troll.

Lightfinger changes tactics.
It's big enough... There are enough people around the beast, confusing it... He's not between it and it's watery abode... It's in pain, not thinking clearly... He draws his slim blade and charges from behind!

"Oh... oh dear." says Chauncey at the failure of his Sleep enchantment. He makes a mental note about trolls for the future. Lesson learned. Being in no way tempted to run up and engage the beast in melee, he scampers away twenty feet or so in the direction of the jungle, keeping a careful eye on the battle.
"Ahem!... you can do it!" he yells.

Re: Quest #8 "Bring Me The Sea Monsters Head"
After All That Work
Sunday, 28th of Reaping
Taking Down Mean Green, Round 3
Noon, Sunny, Humid, Buggy
As the poisonous air dissipates around the huge, rope covered monster, more party members rush in to aid the half-crazed ranger. The sea scrag tears itself free of the final strands of fraying rope, standing up to its full frightening height and screaming out from the pain of its many burns and wounds. To the pleasure of anyone close enough to notice, the wounds of the beast don't seem to be healing themselves like they normally would. However, much to their displeasure, the freed beast can now attack with all of its full fury, cutting down anything blocking its way back to its salty home.
The monster lunges forward towards the much smaller Luther and the serene Azure sea behind him. The harpoon rips the rest of the way through its rubbery flesh, tearing itself nearly free of the hooked business end as it coats the shaft of the weapon with its slimy green ichor as it moves up its length. The pain of the gruesome process makes the monster wail out towards the big bear still holding onto the shaft. Luther takes the brunt of a pair of nasty clawing attacks as the monster tries to clear its path back to the water. 6 dam
The beast does not look well, especially after just running itself through on Luthers harpoon. The party sees that the only way to stop the monster is to strike it down dead before it can get back to the ocean. Alordan, content to have a decisive advantage over the nearly dead monster strikes at it with his sword to no avail. Avaala gets courageous once he sees the sad current state of the thing. He steps forward and swings away at the beast with his extra long staff. His blow does not seem to injure the thing further. He instructs Rollo to attack as well, causing his guard dog to lunge in and tare a large chunk of the trolls leg away from the rest of its foul, reeking flesh. It screams out in pain again as the dog shakes his head back and forth violently.
Monocar yanks back hastily on the rope attached to his large, metal fish hook, hoping to snag the beast on his back cast. The hook instead catches on the curved end of Luther's harpoon, yanking it out of the rangers hands and pulling it the rest of the way through the rubbery flesh of the troll, completely releasing it from the last of its merger confines.
Watching things turn south, Lightfinger bravely sprints into action. He figures that the troll is engaged enough to try a charging backstab. Despite his many advantages, his attack still fails to find pay-dirt.
Chauncey watches the action as his eyes dart back and forth in his head. He slowly backs away from the danger as he cheers his comrades on in battle.
Saracen rushes half way to the water and waits there, acting as the very last line of defense to prevent the scrags escape.

if it does here’s the roll. [1d20+2] = 9+2 = 11 : [1d10+3] = 6+3 = 9 : [3d6+3] = 16+3 = 19

Dropping the rope he grabs one of the pikes, repositioning himself between the water and the troll when he jabs. assuming MMM still gets some kind of bonus and it is enough to stick... He then plants his foot on the butt of the pike in an attempt to hold him.
Pike Attack (no stat bonuses added) [1d20] = 9

The mage is still reluctant to get between the troll and the water. But seeing the troll's powerful interest in the water, he doubts an attack from him will distract it, so he swings again with his staff
Attack with Staff [1d20] = 2
while calling on Rollo to continue his attack. "Good, Rollo! Attack!"
Attack from Rollo, 2+2 Hit Dice [1d20] = 8
Neither seem to be able to repeat their earlier successes, however.

Out of desperation, before he realizes what he's doing, Chauncey runs forward and throws three of his remaining six darts directly into melee, yelling "No! Come back! I need your ichor for research purposes!!"
