Wes

Wes smiles at Randall's new greeting. "Well, I'm feeling pretty Weslamagood today. My god Obad Hai has helped a lot of people recently. Even that meat came from him, though the good news for you is that we originally had twice as much, but we lost it." Wes orders a bowl of stew, without meat, for his empty stomach.

"This is Galanthas by the way. He helped bring the meat to town, and he's a good man in a fight too." Wes takes his stew and lets the two of them get acquainted. He sits at a table where he can try to get a look at the other bar patrons and size them up.

Galanthas the Wise

"Yes, as my friend here told you, I'm Galanthas. Galanthas the Wise, as I'm called in my homeland. I just arrived two days ago to Beachtown and left looking for something to hunt, until I came across that my initial prey had been already killed by my fellow here." He then shakes the bartender's hand. Then, weighing what would be less fatal to eat or drink, given the amount of choices in this little thorp, Galanthas goes on and says "That jungle stew and a glass of grog will do, thank you."

Turning to Wes he whispers to him "Those two over there, at the table, seem like they aren't from around here. Do you know them?"

Wes

Wes tries to recall if he has seen any of the men before, especially in connection with the pirates or smugglers he has met. "I'm not sure really", he says softly. "They may have come in on the same ship as you yesterday. Lots of people show up here all the time. Do you recall seeing them on board your ship?"

Randall smiles once the elf is introduced as a friend of Wes.

"Whagwan den Galanthas da wise! If ya a fren of dis guy, ya ok in my book!"

He sets out 2 bowls of stew on his back bar, clearly scooping chunks of something out of one bowl and plopping it back into the other. He sets the bowls in front of you and smiles. "Disa one haff no meat!" He points out the bowl specially made for Wes. Looking closely at the other patrons, making sure they aren't watching, the barkeep waves his hand at both of them as he whispers quietly. "Disa on me, but don't tell no one mi did dis! Tanks fi elping out roun ear. You are good guys ta haff aroun." He smiles wide after his unusual bout of generosity.

He then fills 2 mugs of his infamous grey grog, sliding them to you over the rough wooden bar top. Seeing the way you are looking at the others, he offers a bit of information.

"Dose folks at da table liff ear. No need to worry bout dem. Mi no no dees guys dough." He does a head jerk towards the two men sitting a few stools down the bar from Galanthas.

None of the 5 patrons in the tavern look familiar to either of you.

Wes

Wes thanks Randall for his generosity and takes a couple of mouthfuls of stew, to line his stomach before he assaults it with the grog.

Turning to Galanthas he says, "I've asked Greff to meet us over here. He looks like the kind of man who knows how to take care of himself in the wild. If we go out into the jungle again, it would be good to bring him along".

Wes lowers his voice to prevent being overheard by the men at the bar. "As you saw last night, it is dangerous out there for a small group. We might want consider if those men over there would be interested in hiring on with us. Of course, I'm worried about how loyal they might be. And what we might pay them with. The trees aren't exactly full of gold pieces around here."

Sipping some of the stew, while staring at the men at the bar, Galanthas answers:"I was thinking exactly about that. If we want to survive out there in the wild, the more we are, the better. Maybe we should approach them once this Greff you mentioned comes along and sound them out?"

Greff

The ranger strides into the tavern giving a friendly wave to Randall before searching the room for Wes, finally seeing the druid Greff makes his way over to his table. "Ah, Wes it's good to see you again I hope that dagger the constable handed you is up to snuff." Greff turns to Galanthas "Well met friend my name is Greff, do you two mind if I take a seat?"

Wes

"Of course you may join us, Greff. Thank you for coming. This is Galanthas. I met him last night while Gwen and I were out hunting. He's a hunter too. The dagger is more than sufficient. Thank you for your help in obtaining that".

Wes moves around the table a little to make room for Greff. "I asked to meet you here because I thought this might be a conversation better held away from the constable. He may not approve of what I'd like to suggest." Wes takes a sip of grog, grimaces, and continues.

"Galanthas and I are thinking of taking another short trip out into the jungle, perhaps a hunting trip, or perhaps for some other reason. You look like a man who knows how to hunt and track animals, so I thought you might be interested in joining us. You can see how much better the folk are doing today with just that one lizard we brought home."

Greff

"That's exactly what I was hoping to do, the Constable's intentions are good but building fortifications for the town does no good if everyone has starved. If we can go out and secure new sources of food or land better suited for farming it would be a huge boon for everyone." The ranger signals for Randall's attention when hes free to order an ale. "I want to do whatever I can to help so whenever you two are ready to go hunting so am I."

Galanthas

"A pleasure to meet you, Greff. Good to see someone joining the cause and someone with your abilities, no less!" Says Galanthas while shaking the ranger's hand. "Maybe the Constable thinks there are many perils within those woods and therefore he wants to build those fortifications. Anyway, as long as we can help the villagers and not contradict his decrees, I'm all in."

After sipping some grog he adds "Wes and me were wondering if those two fellows over there were willing to join us in our endeavors, but not without knowing first what are they up to."

Galanthas

"Hmm... yes. Excuse us, Randall. You're right." He turns to his two companions "So, what do you think? Should we talk to them and ask them if they want to join us in helping the people here in town... Er... or something?"

Wes

"I think that's a good plan" the druid says to Galanthas. "Before we do so, allow me to suggest a plan for our...er...trip".

"Greff, you just said that securing good land for farming should be a priority. The god I serve, Obad Hai, has sent me messages that this should be the case. We should move the people closer to the river, where the land is better for farming. But there is too much pirate activity there right now, and the three, or five, of us can do little to prevent that at the moment" Wes shrugs and smiles sadly.

"I'd like to suggest three options if I may" Wes holds up three fingers and begins to check them off. "First, a hunting trip up the loggers trail north of town and the jungle around there."

"Second, there's a strip of jungle between here and the river trail that hasn't been explored yet. We go a couple of miles down the beach and head straight north".

"Or third, there is a small island offshore to the west that has yet to be explored. If we went there it would be more for the sake of curiosity I admit"

"What do you think?"

Greff hands Randall his silver coin "Thanks Randall."

"If there is game to still be found on the loggers trail I'm for that, if we come up empty we could check out the unexplored strip by the river. I would be up for exploring that island but I think that should be our last resort if we're trying to hunt."

Wes

"Well, the last time I went up the logger's trail we were ambushed by giant apes and a large cat, so there's certainly large animals up there. We just have to be careful not to go too far. I've heard there are some real monstrosities way up by the loggers camp. Somebody called them vegepygmies I think". Wes scratches his head as he tries to recall his first and only trip up there. "I do remember we got in trouble out there and almost ran out of water. That's bad jungle".

Wes nods. "I agree with you about the island. There's probably very little out there. Maybe seabird eggs? I mentioned it out of curiosity, and the fact that searching it might be a task the three us could accomplish in a day. It might be a good fallback if we these gents aren't interested in our proposal."

"Talking of which, how will we hire them? As you know, I have no money to spare and they may not be interested in working just for the goodwill of the locals and a hunk of meat."
I mentioned the island just because it might be a source of easy XP (OM, don't read this bit :) ) There may not be anything too dangerous out there, and we'd get XP for exploring the hex. Of course we'd have to hire a boat :) )

Galanthas

"That little island might be a good second choice, as you say, Wes." And, lowering his voice, Galanthas continues "Well. MNaybe first we should talk to them and ask them what their up to. Maybe they are of the same mind as us and they aren't looking for money. If not, we can always ask them. I still some savings... Not too much, mind you, but something is better than nothing. I seriously doubt they'll find a better bargain around these parts."

Galanthas seems to start walking in the direction of the two warriors, but he stops suddenly and waits for his companions, looking at them hesitantly.

Greff

The ranger grabs his ale and stands out of his chair with a grunt. "Aye, I'm coming." The ranger will accompany Galanthas on his recruitment drive.
Technically Greff isn't allowed to hire...hirelings according to the book but is he allowed to donate his coin to someone so that they could hire help?

One of the two humans sitting at the bar turns after they notice they are being discussed.

"If you got something to say, say it! This ain't no place for being bashful! And we ain't exactly in the mood for games!"

They appear to be adventurers, likely fighter types, but like most of the others you've seen here, they appear a bit ragged and spent.

Wes

Wes walks over with Galanthas and Greff. He glances at both of them for a moment, as if seeking confirmation, then speaks to the two men. Gentlemen, I'll get straight to the point. The three of us are considering a trek up the loggers trail, primarily to hunt, but also to seek whatever mysteries may be up there. As you know, the jungle is dangerous, so we thought there would be strength in numbers. Would you be interested in going along with us?"

The bigger of the two stands to greet the strangers while the other finishes his mug of grog with a grimace.

"We walked up there when we first arrived here a couple weeks ago. Didn't see anything but a pair of timid loggers in a shitty looking shack. What do you hope to find there? Did you hear something juicy about the place? If so, we're interested! Right Stump?"

He claps his friend on the back in acknowledgement who almost spits his last mouthful all over the driftwood bar..
