Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Bertram continues to attack the giant, doing his best to protect himself with his shield as he stabs at any vulnerable appendage.
Attack with Longsword: [1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20, Damage: [1d8+2] = 5+2 = 7

Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
I'm curious: if we manage to bring the giant down where it stands hunches over, will it block the goblinoids behind it from getting to the room?
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
It will probably make it very difficult to move through that spot, yes.
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Galen's brow furrows with concern; part of him burns to rush forward and smite the giant, but the cooler part of his brain knows that Orrin is the more skilled fighter, and better able to fight effectively in the close quarters. Instead, he hangs his mace from his belt once more and retrieves his sling...if the giant falls, he may be able to loose a stone at that gnollish archer.
Orrin, I figured you'd be the best one to take that spot to fight the giant; if for whatever reason you don't wish to, Galen will rush in (I do have fairly decent AC, at least).

Orrin moves ahead and stands with Lug, attempting to mount an assault on the giant. He fails spectacularly.

Krysta loads her sling and fires a bullet at the giant...

Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Uncertain and in the rear ranks, Niles considers the oil flask in his hands. I mean, can't hurt to use on a giant... he thinks unwisely. He throws the flask between Orrin and Lug, hoping to shatter oil over the giant's arm which someone could then light.
throwing oil at giant [1d20] = 2 [1d8] = 6
throwing oil at giant [1d20] = 2 [1d8] = 6
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 6
The giant, spurred on by his colleagues behind, makes a desperate move, ducking low and rushing directly into Lug while he remains the only person blocking his entrance to the room. With one mighty forearm, he deflects Lug's downward stroke and then sweeps him roughly aside, stepping through into the chamber where he can reach more of the assembled party and sending the mighty warrior sprawling to the floor, but getting himself surrounded in the meantime. Bertram thrusts powerfully with his sword at the giant's retreating back, satisfied by the howl of pain that his successful strike elicits.
Giant Bull Rush (thac0 17) [1d20+3] = 12+3 = 15
Bertram attack [1d20+4] = 17+4 = 21, [1d8+2] = 3+2 = 5 damage
The other goblinoids rush into the space, though the corridor is only wide enough for a single combatant to fight in, so Bertram finds himself now in single combat against one of the orcs instead of the giant. The orc uses its short, broad-bladed sword adeptly, thrusting at Bertram while his attention is still turned toward the giant, but the warrior turns the blow aside with his shield and returns his own, cleaving the orc's skull in twain.
Orc Attack [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11, damage [1d8+1] = 5+1 = 6
Orrin steps forward to engage the giant and halt its progress into the room, leaving Galen hanging back as he had hesitated to make room for Orrin to fill a hole in the doorway and Orrin standing alone against the creature with Lug on the floor. Surprised by the unexpected approach of the beast, Krista's sling stone flies wide and Niles' oil flask slips from his grasp and smashes to the floor behind him, coating the rear of the chamber in the dangerous substance but mercifully avoiding striking his allies.
The female orc, her male orc companion standing above her and lying under the corpse of the just-slain orc, begins to rouse herself from her slumber due to the creature landing atop her.
Combatants:
Female orc warrior: 9hp, prone in hallway (lying under the orc corpse and the active orc's feet)
Gnoll with pike: unconscious in hallway (under Bertram's feet)
Gnoll with shortbow: uninjured in the hallway
Orc warrior: uninjured in hallway, facing Bertram
Giant: 15hp
Actions and initiative!

Lug clambers back his feet. "Ha! Not many can knock me back! Including you, soon! Lemme show you the Reason!"

Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Finding himself suddenly facing down a foe many times his size, Orrin grits his teeth and lunges forward, hoping to hamstring the giant.
{Longsword} Attack: [1d20 +1] = 3+1 = 4, Damage: [1d8+1] = 7+1 = 8
Honestly. I can't roll for anything these days.

Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Galen mutters an oath under his breath, then quickly follows it with a prayer to his god. "Bright Koios, sharpen my eye and strengthen my arm," he murmurs, whirling his sling in a tight arc and then whipping it forward. He can almost hear his god's answer in the crack of the lead ball against bone.
Attack with sling: [1d20+1] = 19+1 = 20, damage: [1d4] = 4
I figure Bertram needs an assist; he might be up against 3 dudes soon.
If Galen has a clear shot at the orc Bertram is fighting, he'll target him. If not, then the giant.

Bertram faces off against the orc facing him. He'll try his best to keep the orc in between the archer and himself.

The situation looks grim. Niles tries his best once more to help, heaving an oil flask at the giant.

Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 1
Since we got no party initiative roll...
Initiative [1d6] = 1
The female orc clambers to her feet, taking up a position behind the already-embattled orc in the hallway fighting against Bertram, whose attack clashes on the orc's shield but without effect. In the room, Lug pulls himself upright and back into battle with the giant, sword at the ready, in time to see Niles' ill-fated oil flask strike his companion solidly on the back. The flask shatters, coating the dwarf in oil, and spatters of it strike Lug as well. To add insult to injury, Krista's sling stone strikes his armor from behind as well, leaving a large dent and likely a bruise or a bruised rib along with it. (Orrin takes 2 damage)
Galen sees no open shot into the hallway, and chooses to aim at the giant instead, striking it in the jaw with a painful-sounding crack. As the giant bellows in agony, several large broken teeth spray out, along with blood, on to Lug and Orrin. Lug and the giant attack one another almost simultaneously, Lug's massive blade driving into the creature's stomach as it brings its powerful fists down on to his shoulders, staggering the mighty warrior and knocking him to the ground, his blade slipping from his grasp as he crumples under the assault (Lug takes 10 damage). The giant pulls the sword free of its wound and deflects Orrin's attack with it before tossing it to one side. It is bleeding profusely from the grievous injury.
Giant Smash (thac0 17) [1d20+3] = 11+3 = 14, [2d6] = 10 damage
In the hall, the orc aims another sword-blow at Bertram, who continues to hold his own against the goblinoids but frustrated by his lack of progress against them. He is not sure whether to be heartened or nervous about the turn of events he hears from inside.

Lug naps.
Ouch! Guess Lug should have used the rest of his own healing potion before the combat, huh?

Dismayed at his continued lack of success with his otherwise-well-conceived oil-hurling plans, Niles blanches and shouts to Orrin, "...sorry!"
With Ferris barking to provide distraction and cover, Niles grabs Lug and pulls him back out of reach and makes sure he's stable. He glances around for one of the clerics first, but pulling his own potion from his belt pouch in case.

Disheartened doesn't seem like a strong enough word for how this battle is going
