p.s. Relax, guys--I'm all for heated conversation in-character, but I can't stand jabs at one another OOC no matter the purpose or perceived provocation. Carrying an IC conflict into somewhat-OOC activities (like narrating an action) for the sake of a joke is not specifically uncool, but the line is a really thin one and it can be hard to tell when it's been crossed.

So just try to be clear on when you're referencing an IC conflict because I don't want people getting annoyed with one another on a player level. It makes it harder and less fun to have meaningful and interesting IC conflicts.

If it's a successful backstab I'll go for max damage. Otherwise, can Varas affect the troll's ability to hit, or knock its club from its hand?

As the creature emerges from the water getting taller and taller, and less likely to be up for friendly conversation, Nihilius drops his staff and takes a few steps back from Val and Dorvar, reaching into his pack. With a grim purpose on his lips, he pulls out and lights a torch. "Water trolls... It appears fire should be useful, after all." He ignites a flask of oil and hurls it at the beast.

Throw flaming oil at troll. [1d20] = 7; potential damage [1d8] = 8

Wendall continues hiding like a scared hobbit but readies the necessary components to fire an energy bolt at the giant gollum.

Round One Summary - Trollin'

Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 4

The troll is faster than the group, and follows up on its attack against Valorei with a powerful swing of its rubbery arms. Once again, the nimble elf is able to sidestep the mighty club, but he is slightly surprised to see the creature following up with its gnashing, broken teeth.

Troll attack [1d20] = 9, damage [1d10] = 6

Varas circles around from the back, while Dorvar and Olympia rush forward to join the fray and support their ally. From the bushes, Halfred fires a shot with his bow that strikes Valorei directly in the back. (he takes 2 damage) Valorei is taken to ground by the shot and lands face-first in the pond, his sword flying from his hand and disappearing into the roiling murk.

A flask of oil from Harold's hand flies over the heads of the combatants and lands with a splash in the pond as well a man's length out. Nihilius, a more accurate shot, manages to land his flaming oil in the melee, but the flask strikes Olympia, engulfing her in flames. (she takes 8 points of damage) She emits an ear-piercing shriek and plunges herself bodily into the lake in the hope of extinguishing the fire, which she does, but she also disappears beneath the surface as she does so.

That damage done, Dorvar and Varas make their attacks, with Dorvar slashing across the creature's middle and causing greenish-yellow blood to spray out across his armor, while Varas, watching the results of Dorvar's attack, decides that the creature probably has very few delicate internal organs to target and instead elects to hack precisely at the creature's hand. Several of its fingers scatter with small plops in the water and the club lands with a loud splash atop Valorei's prone form.

Troll: 21 HP

"Throw first, then light!" advises Harold. He throws another flask of oil at the troll, this time with much better precision.

On the bright side, nothing about that round of combat would have gone differently if your initiative roll had been higher.

With a crit and two friendly fire incidents, I think a sub-par initiative roll is the least-memorable part of that round.

Val is at 0 HP and thus in no immediate danger, correct?

Horrified as he watches Valorei crumple to the ground, Halfred drops his bow and charges, drawing his sword and screaming. He wades into combat, his eyes squeezed shut as he hacks at the rubbery giant.

Nihilius blanches as Olympia disappears into the lake. He responds to Harold by tossing the torch at the now oil-doused troll and dives into the lake to find Olympia and pull her to the surface, leaving his pack and wares behind.
