So, Vakar doing "only" 3 damage is not due to that sneak attack was not added, it is due to other factors (like DR, taking half damage from X etcetera)?

I want to use that knowledge, ie does Vakar's stabs seem inefficient, to plot my next combat move.

...both as my error. He did 5, +5 sneak, for a total of 10. Divided in half as he appears resistant to your non-magical dagger. I will adjust your hit from -3 to -5. Skirfir's magic hammer worked fine and Valdis fire seemed extra effective.

Her hammer is currently laying on the floor next to her body.

Right, and how does "weapon proficiencies" work in 5E? Ie is there a penalty if Vakar decides to try to swing it?

sastaz wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 7:22 pm Right, and how does "weapon proficiencies" work in 5E? Ie is there a penalty if Vakar decides to try to swing it?
Proficiencies are granted by categories (like "simple weapons") and individually (like "longsword"). Vakar has:
Rogue:
Weapons: Simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords
Racial Traits:
Aegir's Blessing. Proficient with the Sveillander javelin, svardstav, and yew longbow.
The Warhammer is a martial weapon and not on his list, so non-proficient. All that means is that you don't add your proficiency bonus to it. Also, it is not a finesse weapon, so it bases off Strength instead of Dex, and it can't apply sneak attack damage.

Vakar using the +1 warhammer would be a +2 to hit, 1d8+2 one-handed, 1d10+2 two-handed.

Vakar using the dagger is +4 to hit (because proficiency), 1d4+2 damage, 2d6 sneak attack damage. Divided in half against this creature.

(Probably not useful in the close quarters here, but the Sneak Attack can be applied to ranged weapons and the hammer IS enchanted to add the Thrown property, so if you backed up and threw it, it could do sneak attack damage.)

Ralfwin Edwinsen

Ralfwin Edwinsen: Casts Cure Wounds [1d8+6]=5+6=11

I will bless the stricken Skirfir

Ralfwin is up first in initiative, so Skirfir will be back on her feet before her turn. Rex can post an action.

Skirfir

Skirfir rises up, grasps her hammer once more and heals herself.

Cure Wounds [1d8+3]=3+3=6

Vakar is about to reach for Skirfir's hammer as the dwarf comes to. He then quickly switches his tactics and stumbles backwards, drawing his bow and a silver arrow.

Can he shoot this turn, and in that case: with advantage?

Vakar disengages with what I suspect being a bonus action, steps back nimbly while nocking a silver-tipped arrow, pulling back and with astonishing focus releasing the arrow against the Dying man.

Bow attack (unseen): [1d20+4]=12+4=16 / [1d20+4]=20+4=24, damage: [1d10+2]=7+2=9 (piercing) + sneak attack [1d6]=5 nat 20

Is the Dying Man dead? Do other undead lurk about?

Ralfwin Edwinsen considers there may be a more coordinated attack and that our arrival with his changing was not coincidental.

Music and Ambiance: Tyrfing
Ralfwin dodges back to reach the stricken dwarf, the Dying Man taking advantage of the opportunity to swing its rotting fist at the cleric. The powerful blow, and spead of black lines of necrosis, rocks the cleric but he is undeterred. (-15 bludgeon, -11 necrotic) The Cleric of Odin then bends down and summons his God's will, causing the dwarf's wound to knit halfway closed. (+11)

Stigandr, facing the supernatural fear of its dreadful glare, is completely undeterred. He bellows at the monster before him, "Does it not want a merciful death?" and steps directly forward, locking eyes with it as he brings his axe around in a mighty two-handed blow. The axe cuts into the dessicated and bloodless flesh. (-4)

In the hallway, Valdis hisses once more, summoning the green flame of her ancestors and throwing it an the creature. (-6)

Rising from the floor, Skirfir invokes the inherent magic of her dwarven ancestry, focusing on mending and healing her damaged flesh. It mends further, but the black rivulets of necrosis remain even on the healed flesh...

Letting loose a gutteral howl of its Hel-ish rage, the Dying Man's eyes burn with terrifying hatred at seeking Skirfir rise and again take up the magic hammer which wounded it so effectively, hoping to cow the dwarf into remaining back and out of the hammer's reach. With Stigandr getting up in its face, it lashes out at him with its rotting fist, even as his axe cuts its clavicle. Much of the blow is shrugged off by the rageful man. [-9]

Falling back and focusing himself, Vakar drops his dagger on the floor to pull out his yew longbow. He fires an arrow directly into the creature's eye, which audibly pops and pours black ichor down its face. (-14) Its howl changes to surprise, then it goes down.

...

Actions?
* DC 11 WIS save for Skirfir against Fear effect.
* DC 12 CON save for Ralfwin against disease effect.
* DC 12 CON save for Stigandr against disease effect.

Processing in Initiative order explicitly...

* Cure Wounds is a touch spell. Ralfwin needs to move back to Skirfir, requiring either a Disengage action or an Opportunity Attack. Since the action is to cast the spell, the Dying Man gets to spend his Reaction to take the Opportunity Attack on Ralfwin.
Dying Man (Reaction: Ralfwin) Rotting Fist [1d20+5]=12+5=17 Damage: [2d6+3]=12+3=15 bludgeoning [3d6]=11 necrotic
* Ralfwin gives 11hp back to Skirfir (11/22)
* Doshea is out in the hallway, we'll skip
* Stig hits with an axe (7 damage/2 = 4)
* Valdis drops a flame (again, double damage).
Valdis - Produce Flame [1d20+6]=6+6=12[1d8]=3 fire
* Skrifir heals herself for 6hp (17/22)

It acts, again the two-part effect.
Dreadful Gaze - on Skirfir, same effect (fear) as described last round inf you fail your save.
subject to its Dreadful Glare - Roll a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw. If you roll (modified by Wisdom) between 11 and 20, you're fine. 6 to 10, you are Frightened (disadvantage, can't enter room) until the end of its next turn. 5 or less, you're paralyzed with fear until the end of its next turn.

Rotting Fist - on Stigandr. (He is using two-handed damage, no shield, so has AC 17 against this attack.)
Dying Man (Action: Stigandr) Rotting Fist [1d20+5]=14+5=19 Damage: [2d6+3]=8+3=11 bludgeoning [3d6]=9 necrotic
[Note: I don't think you said you are raging, but I am going to assume you spent your bonus action to do so and halve this damage]

* Vakar shoots it for a critical hit. A total of 14 damage, x2 for the critical hit and then halved for its resistance to non-magical damage cancel out, allowing you to actually do the 14hp damage.

For the two saves:
Stir succeeded, throwing off its Fear affect and wading in with his axe.
Skirfir fails, contracting a magical infection from its necrotic touch. This will require a Cure Disease spell/effect.
