Hansel glances at Emile, and then at Taavi. And thinks over the mental connection Time isn't on our side. Go? as he prepares to enter the codes.

Holding for Taavi and Shadrach.

Confirming: Hansel is preparing to enter the codes. "GO" means Hansel opens the blast door and you go after Karen, rather than retreating from here to the elevator or stairs.

Ambiance: Bitter End

The map:
This is Hansel's heads-up display, but now everyone can see through the door into the security office. The six guys in the room and the one guy with cover in the doorway on the left, the two guys in reserve behind him.
Image
Emile yells to warn of the lemon-scented sedative; the group confirms the Go signal in the telepathic connection. Hansel scans his suit-code and the panel flashes green.

Over his trooper suit's comms, he hears, "Assume hostile intent." as the troopers break the silence.

The heavy blast door splits in the middle, sliding back into the adjacent bulkheads. The Marshalls see a half-dozen white-armored troopers ducked behind desks, half-walls, and moveable emplacements in the Security Center, pausing just a second to assess the situaton while the troopers open fire, a barage of laser rifle flashes flying through the air. Your door opens in the middle of the long side a rectangular room, 30mx 20m, which is filled with screens, desks, and monitoring stations around its perimeter. Doors stand open on both the left and right walls, the left one having some additional guards, the front one shooting at you as well. On the right end of the far wall you see the door labeled "Control Room" which remains closed and the lock panel red - the room that Andras told you he was working in to finish their electronics work.

Dodging to the sides, Emile, Shadrach, and Hansel are able to avoid several blasts, but a second one catches Shadrach in his upper right arm, scorching into flesh (-3). Taavi seems about to say something, less apt to leap reflexively than his combat trained companions, and takes two blasts squarely (-5, -7), leaving him in pain and wheezing. Dantes and Nora crouch behind you at the corner of the wall, taking partial cover with their newly-acquired rifles ready as Nora pushes Oliver behind her out of sight.

Actions!

OOC:

The seven guards in trooper armor all are prepared with full cover behind desks and furniture (AC 16+4=20). They all are holding ready actions for when the door opens, so those go off first.

Targeting - I will have them all knee-jerk their fire this round as the door opens, rather than coordinating tactics or concentrating fire. (Shadrach 1-2, Hansel 3-4, Emile 5-6, Taavi 7-8. NPCs with cover at the rear: Dantes 9, Nora 10, Oliver not targetable)
Targeting: [1d10]=5[1d10]=7[1d10]=1[1d10]=1[1d10]=3[1d10]=8[1d10]=3

Hansel lets fly with a full-auto burst with the laser rifle, chewing into the cover protecting the troopers. Hopefully he at least keeps their heads down, as he moves toward the Northeast conventional map directions to get a better angle.

Taavi takes two heavy shots through his primitive leathern armor with the lawyer's coat lain over it. He looks down and sees that the Greater Kumheka attorney's office name card hanging from his neck has been shot through and its plastic sleeve neatly melted with a crisp brown circular rim. Crimson spurts from the hole. He yells through the mental network, "Marshals! Flank the desks and fire! Flank and fire!" He turns to Nora. Shoot, Nora! Shoot as if life depends on it! He dashes toward the side of a desk, quickly aims at an armored storm trooper, and fires his semi-auto rifle.

Not sure he can do all of that in one combat turn. But.... Shoot - 0 [1d20]=1 Semiauto Rifle +1 (1d10+2+1)

Ambiance: Bitter End

In the rear, Oliver remains hidden behind his mom while Nora and Dantes both lay down a massive field of burst fire through the opened blast door. Scorch-marks soon mar the smooth white plastic of the desks and security workstations that the guards are using for cover.

Taavi yells commands to the group - "Marshals! Flank the desks and fire! Flank and fire!" and "Shoot, Nora! Shoot as if life depends on it!" - as he sidesteps to the left side of the blast door. He brings around his trusty rifle and fires it with a dull click - the round jams in the chamber, turning the weapon into an inelligant club. (Critical fail) Shadrach sidesteps to the other side of the door, taking partial cover and loading his spike-thrower.

As the blaster fire careenes around you, Hansel and Emile both rush into the room and flank right around the desks and barriers. Emile point-blanks the first guard they reach right in the helmet, splattering brain matter in a cone behind him (-12). Hansel fires a round into the second guard, puncturing the white plasteel chest plate, and then Shadrach fires a steel spike into the man's chest and finishes him off (-7, -8). Both guards who would now be within melee range of the two Marshalls are downed.

The guards focus their fire on the two men now in the room. Hansel takes a headshot through his trooper helmet (critical hit, -8. 1hp left), the helmet's plating lessening it just enough for him to remain standing, stars before his eyes and ears ringing. The guard in the doorway to the left takes careful aim and manages to hit Emile square in his chest despite his monk-like reflexes (critical hit, -16). Emile goes over backwards onto the floor, the spurting of the blood making clear the wound is near his heart.

Actions!

OOC:

First: Adjudicating the flanking. The guards had time to prepare and they have cover from anyone at the doorway. Flanking to get around their cover requires entering the room, and the room honestly isn't that big. I'm going to rule that entering the room and flanking cancels their cover but puts you in melee range. In melee range, rifles get bound-up and can't be used and handguns are penalized.
  • Hansel and Emile both have the Close Combatant focus, and so are unaffected by this situation. (Emile is already using handguns and I'll assume Hansel grabbed a laser pistol off a downed guard; there's plenty.) They enter, flank (no cover bonus, guards back to AC 16) and shoot them point blank.
  • Taavi and Shadrach do NOT have the close combatant focus, so I will assume they don't dive into the room and put themselves at melee range. They'll flank the blast door and fire as-scripted. They'll still be penalized by the guard's cover (hit AC 20) but are able to have partial cover themselves (Shadrach goes up to AC 18, Taavi goes up to AC 16).
  • Dantes and Nora remain at partial cover at the rear hallway; they can shoot rifles fine, but will only be able to target the middle opponents before they have to move up.
  • NEXT ROUND: I need Taavi and Shadrach's decisions on going in or staying out.
TL:DR - walking into an ambush is hard.

I'll NPC Shadrach as shooting appropriately, using his Twitchlock.
Primary Weapon: Spike Thrower [1d20+1 (if using Twitchlock Actuators), +3 vs Shadows] [3d8+1] Range: 20/40, Magazine: 7/15, Enc 2

Shadrach Spike Thrower [1d20+1]=19+1=20[1d20+1]=4+1=5 [3d8+1]=7+1=8
Dantes - Burst Fire Laser Rifle [1d20+6]=5+6=11 [1d10+3]=9+3=12
Nora - Burst Fire Laser Rifle [1d20+4]=10+4=14[1d10+2]=3+2=5

Your fires:
Hansel: Hit -7hp
Emile: Hit -12hp
Taavi: Critical fail, rifle jams (Grab another off a dead guard as an action or use psychic/other means)
Shadrach: Hit -8hp
Dantes: Miss
Nora: Miss

Their fires:
They will now concentrate fire - 1-3 on Emile, 4-6 on Hansel, 7 is 50/50 between them.
Elite Guards 1-3 [1d20+4]=3+4=7[1d10+2]=6+2=8[1d20+4]=9+4=13[1d10+2]=8+2=10[1d20+4]=11+4=15[1d10+2]=3+2=5
Elite Guards 4-5 [1d20+4]=4+4=8[1d10+2]=9+2=11[1d20+4]=20+4=24[1d10+2]=2+2=4

...Hansel hit once for a critical hit 4x2= -8hp.
...#7 also a critical hit on Emile, 8x2= -16hp.
Emile goes down.

New Hit Points:
Shadrach (AC 16, 18 Shadows) 6 / 15
Hansel Shatner (AC 18*) 1 / 26 (-8hp)
Emile (AC 20) 0 / 16 (-16hp)
Taavi Perttu (AC 14) 2 / 14
Dantes (AC 14) 17 / 21
Nora (AC 13) 16 / 16
Oliver (AC 10) 3 / 3

Ambiance: Bitter End

Emile bleeds on the floor by Hansel's feet as Hansel yells back towards the door: "MEDIC!" He whispers song lyrics to himself as he levels his pistol amongst the chaos, firing around the moveable emplacement and taking down one of the next set of guards. (Guard #4, -7, downed)

Out in the hallway, Nora yells back: "...and how the hells to do you expect me to get there??" She continues to overheat the laser rifle, laying down suppressive fire in burst mode and spraying blast-marks across the emplacements.

Shadrach racks the action on his spike thrower, firing another round into the workstation the guards are hiding behind on the left, blowing the top of it to pieces. (A total of 23 damage to the cover, lower its protective value by -2) Seizing the opportunity, Dantes fires a burst of fire from his rifle and knocks the guard behind it backwards onto the ground as well. (Guard #6, -10, downed)

Taavi drops his jammed rifle and pulls his pistol from his shoulder holster, firing a bullet into the room, which pings ineffectively off the emplacements. If only there were a way to shift them out if the way...

The armored guards crouch behind their cover positions, except the last one left alive on the right side of the room and exposed to Hansel. He shifts position to his right to regain cover from the intrepid marshall. A barrage of fire from the stormtroopers lights up the room with blasts of red light, mostly aimed at Hansel who stands now alone amongst them, but by some miracle they are completely unable to hit a single thing.

From the doorway on the left end of the room, the trooper stationed there moves in, two more reinforcements moving in behind him, ducking the errant blasts and assuming their downed companion's positions of cover. (#7 moves into the room and we add #8 and #9) On his heads-up display inside his badly damaged helmet, Hansel sees the three reinforcements on the right side remain positioned down the hallway, not advancing to the firefight.

OOC:
Elite Guards 3 [1d20+4]=4+4=8[1d10+2]=3+2=5
Elite Guards 4-5 [1d20+4]=3+4=7[1d10+2]=6+2=8[1d20+4]=7+4=11[1d10+2]=9+2=11

Emile: Refresher on Dying rules. Emile has six rounds to get stabilized before he dies (this is 1 round down). Once stabilized, he returns to 1 hp after 10 minutes of rest. Magic/Psionics are needed to be faster. So, he needs to get pulled to safety. Nora has the Healer Focus to stabilize him once he does. If he takes any damage before stabilized, he dies instantly. (Hansel is adjacent to him and can pull him out of the room as an action and move. Taavi can also drag him to safety telekinetically. Otherwise, someone else must enter the room, then leave the room with him, as two rounds.)

Hansel listens to Nora's reply, glances down at Emile at his feet, the dodging trooper, flicks his eyes to the overlay inside his helmet - those guys to the north worry him...trying to do the math. Fails. Damn! Over the party line Can you drag that cover away from them or smash them with it? I'm coming out! Don't shoot me much! He reaches down, grabs Emile and sprints back to the doorway.

Shadrach curses as he advances into the room, firing staccato bursts as he goes. When he reaches the pair in the room, he claps Hansel on the shoulder, yelling "go!". He drops the spike-thrower to dangle from its sling as he begins to drag Emile out by the shoulders, hunching his own in hopes of deflecting the incoming fire.

Ambiance: Bitter End

Can you drag that cover away from them or smash them with it? I'm coming out! Don't shoot me much! Hansel's though echo through the telepathic link. The first guard to pop up from cover gets a burst-fire barrage to his faceplate from Dantes, (-13, dead) what remains of the guard toppling over out of sight.

Hansel reaches down and grabs Emile by the shoulders as Taavi extends his hand and the front portable barricade flings itself to the side. Shadrach curses, charging into the room and strafing the guards. He teaches Emile, hunching over to help protect him from fire, and helps Hansel carry him out the door, skirting to the side and out of the line of fire.

The four guards remaining in the room loose another barrage of fire - three concentrate fire on Shadrach as he shields Emile, two miss but the third is a head-shot, (Critical hit, -16) dropping the grizzled veteran on the floor and leaving Hansel to drag Emile the last stretch beyond the door. One guard, as he enters from the left corridor, is alarmed by Taavi's display of power and shoots the lawyer squarely in the chest instead. (-5) Already sorely wounded, Taavi collapses against the door jam, bleeding out as well.

Nora rushes forward, her satchel already open as she treats his laser wounds. Getting him stabilized, she uses one of the doses of Lift stim to speed his recovery.

"Move Move Move! Secure the prisoners!" shouts the squad leader in the other room.

OOC:
That's practically a TPK, but not quite... Hansel is the only PC still up and he has 1 hit point.

I'd like for Redwarrior to provide a final post on how Hansel reacts in this situation. Does he surrender? Try to cut a deal? Go out in a blaze of glory? Flee down the stairwell next to him?

The NPCs will follow his inspiration.

For the others, post how you react waking up in a cell.

I'll then move into an Epilogue montage and let you each write the last posts for your characters. While you may not die here, this is the culmination of the campaign. You were all great, and you get a say in the endings as we close out.

Rolls:
Taavi's telekinesis doesn't need a roll. You can move things, but not cause harm with them. So, spending your action and committing one Effort for the Scene is enough and one barrier is moved.

Shadrach is both helping carry and firing his gun - one of those is just color. Since Hansel is already dedicating his Main Action to the carrying, I'll allow Shadrach's shooting to be real, and happening after Taavi moved the barricade. (Unfortunately, it still misses. Dang rolls.)

Nora stabilize [1d6]=4[1d6]=5[1d6]=1
Nora stabilizes Emile (best two of three dice) - he will wake in 10 minutes with 1 hit point and after that will be fragile. With the Lift stim, he gets 1d8+1hp and wakes in 5 minutes. Without magical or psionic healing, nothing is faster.
Lift [1d8+1]=3+1=4
5 minutes, he's up with 4hp.

Dantes then needs to act:
Dantes - Burst Fire Laser Rifle [1d20+6]=12+6=18 [1d10+3]=10+3=13
Nice.

There are four guards left to react:
Targetting... Shadrach is shielding with his body, so I won't target Emile and I'll target Shadrach twice. They're also twice as likely to get shot moving as Taavi is at the doorway.
Taavi (1), Hansel (2-3), Shadrach (4-7)
Targeting [1d7]=7[1d7]=5[1d7]=1[1d7]=4
Their shots are:
Elite Guards 5 & 7 [1d20+4]=3+4=7[1d10+2]=10+2=12 [1d20+4]=16+4=20[1d10+2]=6+2=8
Elite Guards 8 & 9 [1d20+4]=14+4=18[1d10+2]=3+2=5 [1d20+4]=11+4=15[1d10+2]=4+2=6
Miss on Shadrach
Critical Hit on Shadrach 8x2= -16
Hit on Taavi -5
Miss on Shadrach

Shadrach (AC 16, 18 Shadows) 0 / 15 (-16)
