"I fully accept your tactical assessment of what will happen if our companies get into conflict. Doing so is in neither of our interests. I also acknowledge that, where possible, you have attempted to minimise wounds to troops and focus on equipment, and that there are forces outside of your direct control, such as some the local factions who have no such qualms. My comment about training was not meant to be accusatory, just a poorly worded attempt to try and define what we mean by no action between our units. I apologise."

he pauses

"It is true that I have been pro-active in my interpretation of a protection detail in a few cases. When it came to the pirates, I felt that an unstable Inchin would be putting the delegates in danger, particularly if there was a loss of power at the mansion. The SEMC could react quicker than the guard, and to be honest I had no confidence that the guard would actually be able to win. We took a unit of guard with us to provide legal credibility and let them save face that it was the SEMC that solved the issue not them, nothing more. As for tonight, I had two reasons. The first was to ensure that the opposition gained no additional weaponry to continue the assault on the mansion, which certainly puts the delegation in danger. The second reason was that I was sick of seeing the guard suffer for their officers continued incompetence. If the SEMC was meant to be a QRF for the guard then we wouldn't be having this conversation." he sighs "As for the accusation of training...the officers won't even heed the warnings I give them when they send their troops into an ambush, so there is certainly nothing they wish to learn from us. Major, you know what happened on Collace. You were at the Bartizan, you saw the run-in with Captain Smith. The SEMC is certainly no Imperial patsy, although we have imperial and non-imperial citizens amongst our troops and our current client is pro-imperial I will admit. I have simply been trying to make the best decisions I can to protect the delegation in a complicated and volatile situation. Perhaps trying the save the lives of the guard was a mistake, but I have seen enough pointless death recently. I have no doubt that the locals plan for regime change will be coming to fruition in the next few days. Depending on the form that change takes then it may, or may not, put the delegates at risk, and if it does then I am bound to defend them. I can see how my attempts at humanitarian aid for the guardsmen could be interpreted as supporting the current regime, and it won't happen again. Only a fool would send their troops out again, and I am tired of supporting fools, intentionally or not. If those in charge of the uprising do not place the delegation in danger then the SEMC will not get involved. But if they plan to assault the mansion, then they had better be very careful in how they do it."

He looks over towards Jakob

"I'm done, so say your piece Lieutenant"

Erica replies in a conciliatory tone “Colonel, I think we can agree that we have both made the best use of the resources available to us in difficult circumstances. Your humanitarian instincts are entirely proper as is your dedication to your current charges. If I were to admit to any insight into the minds of those who employ me I would assure you that damage to the trade delegation is not a desirable outcome for them”.

“If you are agreeable to the ceasefire our units can stand down. You are an honourable man Colonel - I’ll take your hand on the matter if you’ll accept mine”.

Jakob

Erica replies “You fly your colours proudly Lieutenant – that’s rare enough in District 268. However, I think you are a very intelligent soldier capable of both controlled aggression and diplomacy and I also believe that we agree on the issue of wasted lives”.

She raises her own fist and glances at it before rotating it so the back of her hand faces Jakob “For one I’d always be willing to lend the Corps a finger”. She gives Jakob a challenging smile but doesn’t complete the gesture.

In a much softer tone and with strange propriety she continues “I’m sorry to have blown our first date Lieutenant. Alas, I fear the odds were always against us and, though I am honoured by the notion, I am spoken for”.

“For the record the “dimwit” placing the TDX on the tanks had to sub contract that phase of the operation” the corner of her mouth twitches with irritation “and I couldn’t target the turret rings because I needed the tanks to retain traversing main armament for the second phase. The operation was within tactical tolerances but nevertheless imprecise”.

She concludes “Please consider that now the Baron has been checked in his oppressive military adventures he may actually be forced to negotiate and thereby save more lives. When operating in a place that is truly indefensible the only meaningful victories are surely in hearts and minds?”

Jakob raised an eyebrow. "I hope your intel skills are better than your Anglish. 'You ruined' is past tense, something happened before this. I wouldn't ask you out on a date."

He sighed, and gulped the coffee. Erica's unfinished hand gesture didn't really bother him. "Sorry, it's been a long day. You're cute and all, but both of us are spoken for."

Secondly, the guard prisoners will be released to the SEMC. Lastly, the SEMC shall be allowed to continue to recover any viable guard vehicles and render any unrecoverable ones inoperative. Is that correct? We haven't really discussed the last one since the lieutenant and Chefsergeant first talked"

Jess continues the protective overwatch of Guaghan's recovery efforts while listening in on the meeting with Ms East. She keeps the team focused on locating opposition forces and likely positions while Harry keeps the G-Carrier flying circuits over the Guard.

I don't think Prerna will have more contestants, not after the last object lesson she delivered...

All

While the negotiations continue Gaughan summons a reserve crew to drive the #3 tank out of Star Town. The grisly scene doesn't do their morale much good but they are able to recover the tank.

The ambulance ferries seriously wounded cases back to the Mansion for urgent treatment while "walking wounded / triaged cases" are put in the unarmed Technical.

Beau reports he has seen what be believes to be a "claymore" anti personnel mine covering the ambush site but since no one has set it off he assumes the ceasefire is holding.

Freya eventually shepherds her small group of lost souls back to the Processional where they hitch a ride home on a tank.

If the "opposition" are about in Star Town they remain unseen.

Erica nods and simply says "I agree. We have a ceasefire".

She adds "It's now beyond my control but if you repair overmuch of the damage I've so carefully inflicted on the Guard's materiel and morale then you know that the Baron will just use that to kill more of his people?"

She then asks "If it is convenient my forces will release the prisoners to you now?"

Beau states its up covering the site near the wrecked Guard APC. At over two kliks such a small target's beyond even Prerna's reach.

(OOC: If she's planning on neutralising it by fire a shot into that zone might wreck the ceasefire).

The longest rifle kill on record is a shade over 3500m with a 50 BMG. I'm betting Prerna's heavy gauss is good for at least that far, especially given that it's firing the same 600gr projectile at twice the velocity, and somewhere over 4x the energy. Point taken on the ceasefire, though...

Oh, I agree. Max (listed) range is 1800m (but Pen 7 so there's still some "spare energy" to go beyond that) you could possibly stretch the range but even Prerna is likely to need more than one attempt and that'll have folk "twitching".

As soon as she releases Frank's hand Erica immediately says "Colonel the south side of the junction and your LZ are covered by secondary devices. Provided no one interferes with them all we be well but please pass the word. Attempting to disable them would be unwise and an accident now would be - unfortunate. With your permission my people will make safe and remove their ordnance".

She looks to the Chefsergeant "Rolf?"

He nods and with a relieved grin replies "Ja, völva".

She concludes with "The prisoners are nearby. For their own safety we couldn't keep them anywhere else. Whenever you declare yourselves ready you shall have them".

"Thank you, ma'am. Chefsergeant." Jakob gulped the rest of the coffee, put his helmet back on, and sealed up as he checked in with Beau, Jess, and Liv. He had work to do, but not directly. He sent encouraging words to Beau, and let him run with the idea. Jess got the 'check everything' task, since she was the detail oriented person of the crew.

It was good to be on an organized team.

"Lots of good data," he comm'd Liv, before going back on the O channel. "We're getting the wounded and prisoners. Cease-fire is in effect. Let's get things going, shall we?"

He then transmits on the Officer channel "Ladies and gentlemen, as already indicated by the Lieutenant the ceasefire is in operation, please ensure your squads are fully briefed. Be warned, there are secondary devices to the south side of the LZ. Do not attempt to remove them, Monoc company will be removing them shortly."

He then turns back to Erica

"Do you think there are factions of the locals here that are likely to interfere with our withdrawal to the mansion because of the prisoners?"

Frank & Jakob (& All)

Erica immediately replies “Yes, so I have arranged an escort for you”. Pausing to listen to a comm message she says “Seniorsergent Kjeld has the prisoners outside. Shall we?”

The moonlit street outside the café now contains a tall blond male wearing a desert field cap and the odd mix of civilian coat and CES. Like Jørgen he is also armed with a suppressed snubmachinegun which he carries casually whilst marshalling the prisoners.

The group includes five guardsmen without their kit, weapons or CES. Four certainly appear to be non-combatant: one limps along with a field dressing tied about his left thigh while another with a bloody bandage about his chest is supported by two female junge wearing distinctive white cloth “field signs” on their arms. Two more junge “medics” carry another wounded case on a stretcher while another wanders aimlessly along in the group’s wake guided by a “fit” guardsman.

Erica states "These people are free to go".

A couple of buggies tick over in the street nearby.
