Book Three: Out of Time
Re: Book Three: Out of Time
Dr. Francis Morgan:
Frank again smiles warmly, ”Of course inviting strange men into your home is out of the question. Where are my manners? I apologize; please excuse me.”
He quickly glances at the fullness of her belly, ”I never had the opportunity to start a family of my own, what with all my time being consumed with academia. Sometimes I wish I would have chosen another path, one that lead to a loving wife and children. How far along are you?”

“Move over, woman!” he says irritably to Mathilde. God! his pillow is soaked, nightmares again—no, not the usual horrors, war and death, this one was about Sam. Where are you bud?
ooc: Typing on my tablet, sorry no colour or anything. Will do so in future.

In bed, the early hours: He cups her breast. "'kin gerroff!" she mumbles, "The bank's closed." Right! he's gonna give her buttock a playful, albeit mighty, slap. Then he stops himself, Do you want coffee and eggs for breakfast? He settles back, lying on his side, the one opposite to his mustard gas ruined lung. The stink of his stale sweat fills his nostrils and keeps him awake. What did happen to Sam? The poor guy was raving, wasn't he? Well, he seemed calm enough, but the bullshit. ...Hypnosis, freak shows... Freak shows, the carnival. Where is it now?
"Mathilde," he says, tucking into his third egg, "that carnival still showing?"

Dr. Clarke:
“Thank you Mr. Anderson's for your time. I appreciate you speaking with me.” David says as his eyes wander beyond Mr. Anderson to the silhouette of the young girl in the back. What is she doing back there? What is it with women in his life. Have they all gone mad or is it just me. He quickly focuses back to Mr. Anderson hoping his loss of concentration was not noticed “Yes, yes I will look into the book store in Marblehead, Lorecraft you said.” He jots the name and location into his small notebook in the margin of his list of local booksellers. While there he looks over the list once again. One name catches his eye. “One more thing Mr. Anderson, what kind of place is Barnes Bohemian Basement Books, Baubles, and Brew? It doesn’t sound very scholarly."

Reginald Wilkins, bookdealer
When the conversation gets going, Reginald makes his own queries.
Who is Carcosa? What do you know of Chertovski? Or Aseneth Waite?
Is the dog smiling at Reginald, or is he simply imagining it...? Do dogs smile?

Claire Ford's Residence
Andover, Massachusetts
10:05 am, Oct. 9, 1925
“I’m due next month,” Claire answers Dr. Morgan. The professor does the math and it doesn’t add up.
"Who is Carcosa?" asks Reginald.
"A mythical place in Robert Chambers' King in Yellow book, though its first appearance was in an Ambrose Bierce story," Claire answers.
Reginald recalls the Carcosa he knows has a first name of Ambrose.
"What do you know of Chertovski?" the bookseller inquires.
"I've never heard of him," says Clair. "He sounds Russian. Perhaps a Bolshevik?"
"And Aseneth Waite?"
"Sorry," she responds, nodding her head in the negative. "What is this all about?"
Reginald looks at the dog, which indeed seems to be smiling at him.

Perhaps it from Marius' continued petting. The hunter seems to have his mind more on the dog than the conversation.
Dr. Balandabar, ever suspicious, continues to scan the area while Dr. Morgan and Reginald talk with Claire. He sees a black cat cross a neighbor's yard into Clair's property on the left side, slinking under a ladder leaning against a garden shack.

Hal Lancaster’s Apartment
Baltimore, MD
7:00 am, August 25, 1925
Hal wonders where Sam is, or if his old friend is even alive. What was the name of the detective agency he worked for? Pinkerton’s, that was it.
And it was The Dark Pharaoh’s Freak Show and Carnivale that was the outfit Sam was obsessed with. Hal remembers that place well from his visit there with Sam.
"How the hell should I know if the freak show is still around?" Mathilde answers irritably, adjusting her bra. "That was two months ago."

Anderson's Antiquarian Books

“One more thing Mr. Anderson, what kind of place is Barnes Bohemian Basement Books, Baubles, and Brew? It doesn’t sound very scholarly," asks Dr. Clarke.
"Ah yes," he answers with a sly grin. He glances over his shoulder at the woman clerk in the next room and almost whispers: "Betty Barnes the bodacious bookseller is what we in the trade call her. She runs a speakeasy and...more beneath her bookshop. An absolute delight Betty is!"

Mathilde's right, how the hell would she know where the carnival is now. He realises that he can't be bothered with a witty quip, he just hands her his greasy plate and taps his coffee cup.
She brings the pot across to the breakfast table. "I better be in your will."
"Top of the list."
He lights a gasper and unfolds the morning paper, scanning its advertisements for mention of The Dark Pharoah's Freak Show. Then, he'll place a call.
"Operator, put me through to the Pinkerton Detective Agency."

Dr. Clarke:
David leans in to hear what Mr. Anderson has to say.
With a surprised and joyful tone, he says "Really?!" A wide grin goes across his face as he resumes his proper stance.
He licks his pencil before placing a star next to Ms. Barnes establishment. "Good to know."
With an outstretched arm and a hearty handshake, he says goodbye to the proprietor.
"Thank you for your time, Mr. Anderson. The information you have provided me is quite enlighting." He says with a sly smile.
Dr. Clarke exits Anderson's Antiquarian Books, off to his next viable lead on his list. Before stepping off the curb he checks his wristwatch to see if it's too early for a little nip.

Perhaps his paranoia is finally getting to him, or the post-traumatic stress from the raid on Club Z is finally catching up. Perhaps it is the repressed feelings lately uncovered via his psychotherapy.
Perhaps it is the smiling face of the dog.
But one way or another, Reginald realizes this is a fool's errand. The investigators have been three steps behind from the beginning. They are going to end up giving Ms. Ford, and by extension the cult, more information than they will receive. Of course she feigns ignorance.
Reg tries to come up with a convincing story.
I collect rare books, some of which were recently stolen.
I thought perhaps you might have information about them, through your father's connections. Obviously I was mistaken.

"I don't know anything about stolen books, though dad has quite a collection," answers Claire.
"It takes four of you to check in on some missing books?" She looks skeptical.
"My father and I don't see eye-to-eye on things," Claire says to Reginald. "Why do you think I tried to escape him?"

Dr. Clarke glances at his watch. Probably too early for a nip, though the way things have been going perhaps it's not. Betty Barnes sounds enticing.
The ex-professor looks at his list. Ironically, the most promising location on the list is the one he can't go into anymore. The Rare Book Reading Room of the Miskatonic University Library, well known for its occult collection. Dr. Clarke knows that only staff, or scholars who receive permission from the Library ahead of time, can access its secrets.
The Lorecraft shop in Marblehead-by-the-Sea sounds intriguing. Given the investigator now has ample time on his hands, a drive to that small ocean-side community may be in order. He ponders - Betty or Lorecraft?

“I assume my father is in New York, though he travels frequently,” responds Claire, as she brushes some ash off her pregnant belly and takes a long drag on her cigarette.
The investigators recall James Ford’s business office was in Manhattan. When the BOI visited his office on several occasions they were told he was traveling. Ford is in real estate and, you recall from letters found in Ambrose Carcisa’s apartment early in the investigation, had facilitated real estate purchases on behalf of Carcosa and the Church of Starry Wisdom in such locales as Providence, New Orleans, Phoenix and Salem, NH.
“Why don’t you and your father see eye-to-eye?” chimes in Marius in his typically direct style, now that he seems done petting the black lab. ”Does he not approve of your lifestyle? Or you his?”

Lorecraft Bookshop
The Old Spite House
13 Harbinger Way
Marblehead, Mass.
11:45 am, Oct. 9, 1925

Dr. Clarke arrives in picturesque Marblehead and asks directions to Lorecraft Bookshop.
"In the old Spite House down on Harbinger," says a gnarled old man, pointing southeast toward the shoreline.

Lorecraft's Bookshop occupies the first floor of the ramshackle house which has seen better days. The building is a stone's throw from the ocean. A little boy, perhaps seven or eight, is kicking stones in the dirt road that runs behind the house.
Dr. Clarke steps inside.
"Henry Peterson Lorecraft at your service," says the proprietor, looking up from a large tome on a book stand not far from the door. He has a prodigious beard and what looks to be a small cat residing in it.
The shop is a packed mish-mash of books and occult paraphernalia.

Reginald mentally kicks himself for giving away too much information too quickly. Surely this witch is a member of the cult. He makes a mental note to try to throw her off the scent, but for now Reginald observes her responses in silence.

"Enough of this tip-toeing. Ms. Ford, do you remember Dr. Raymond Randolph? An elderly gentleman you cared for not too long ago. Of course, you do."
"Do you not find it odd that this man, Dr. Raymond Randolph was also the man who visited you in Paris to convince you to return home to you?"
"By chance and I know a pregnant woman's mind has the tendency to forget things but did it not strike you strange if not impossible in the very least that the Raymond Randolph, the man you encountered in Paris, a man in his thirties, is now aged more than twice his years in the matter of a month. Not only in appearance but in body and soul."
"Ms. Ford, how did you come into the employment of Dr. Randolph's care? And I want the truth. Who sent you to his home! What information were you supposed to find there? Were you pressed by your father to discover what Dr. Randolph found in that cave in Turkey? Did he you steal or copy down his notes? What did Raymond tell you of the... crystal!" the Italian demands with great vigor and arm movements.

Reginald asks questions designed to mislead. He hopes he can buy some time for the group by obfuscating their next moves to members of the cult.
What awaits us in the Nevada desert?
Who runs your father's operations in Glasgow?
Where does your father travel on the summer solstice?
