Maya and Victor are on stand-by checking their surrounding area as the rest of the group either watches with them or gets to work on the chest.

Victor will anxiously be awaiting the results of the chest!

Ok, guys, either satisfy the curiosity with the wooden chest, in spite of what you feel might happen,

or, ignore it & move on!!!

Fine! Mort opens the chest

Dungeon Master:

Going on Pulpatoon's tip:

Wexley opens the wooden chest, then a portcullis comes crashing down separating, Wolfram & Wexley & Lutha from the rest of the party!

Inside the chest, is a piece of parchment.

Wolfram

unperturbed, leans his mace against the chest edge, bends down and picks up the parchment with his right hand, asks Wexley to hold the torch, then unrolls the parchment to read it. Is it in any of the languages he knows: Couatl, dragonne, ki-rin, lammasu or can he otherwise figure the text out by skill: Languages, Ancient 1 INT 0 P,Wz ?

BTW, as Lutha accompanied Wolfram up to the chest, wouldn't he also be caught on the same side with Wolfram and Wexley when the portcullis crashed down? Not that I specifically want him to be trapped, but just checking....

Dungeon Master:

Lutha & Wexley can read the parchment which is in large scribbled goblin script, "Tog'ahc Pid!" which translates to "Got'cha Stupid!"

Lutha

upon hearing Wexley read out the goblin taunt, exclaims:"Foulness speaks against us ! Hail pity"

Wolfram

"The only foulness was in my own lack of judgement; I was too eager for gold. So, in a sense, one could argue that this note is literally correct. I will not waste any more mission time; Sir Wexley, shall we have a go at bending these bars ?" (Bend/Lift 16%) Percentage % roll: [1d100] = 15

Mort lets out a deep sigh "Well that was anticlimactic. Now what? Have we explored all of this cave?"

Idonea strives to hide how impressed she is as her weird, studious cousin casually bends the portcullis bars by brusquely answering Mort, "No. There's a tunnel right here we haven't been down." She points to the southeast. "And, of course, we abandoned our search of the western side of the cave prematurely."

Mort "Alright let us go finish that business or are we all here now? Either way we are taking far too long at this we may as well make this cave our own at this pace."

Wolfram

"We heard no sound of hostiles whatsoever when uncle & I came over here before. And none during this interlude either. So, to maintain momentum - and safety - our vote is on: southeast."
Lutha

Dungeon Master:

Looking South Easterly you see that the passage appears to begin to open wider, perhaps a room up ahead.

Mort will scout ahead and check for traps.

Kormak takes a position as a rear guard just in case something decides to sneak up behind them.

Dungeon Master:

Not Finding any traps or passages in the first 10 feet in the upper west corner of what appears to be another Guard Room, Mort Sees:

Against, the west wall to Mort's right, he sees an open-top barrel with several crude wooden mugs on a small table near-by.

Mort sees a thick hemp rope, knotted at intervals lying haplessly on the floor, looking like it's been kicked around a bit.

You sight follow the rope & just see what appears to be a white chalk-line down the center of the floor of this room.

Mort crouches down and points out the rope and white line. "Suppose that is where they had our merchants tied up?"

Lutha

"Looks like someone played tug o' war here! Many hands is a friend indeed, as Eeknow would say."

Maya begins searching the area for anything, "Check for hidden passages."

Victor comments cheerfully, "And grab the rope! One can never have enough rope after all!"

Lutha

while, as usual Spotting concealed door without actively searching 1 in 6: [1d6] = 2 (i e anywhere)

now also Finding secret door when actively searching 2 in 6: [1d6] = 2 (along southern wall)

while mumbling to himself: "The stars hear a hero! Attain thyself"
