Flight Deck Firefight Round 4

All

While those in/around the SEMC position in the lift experience perhaps nearly a minute's lull in the action enabling them to police up the position and deal with their wounded the battle continues to evolve elsewhere.

The Paras on the NW/SE taxiway group up and push on towards the Gatehouse but are splitting their fire between the defenders and the scout section snipers on the Spire. The group closing on the Gatehouse from the southeast are now met by a deluge of automatic fire switched from the "stopped" squad. It seems that Gaughan may have now lost both his static APCs (neither are firing and one burns) but, despite the explosive impact marks all about the Gatehouse's weapons slits, retains at least two of Caxton's HMGs which batter the Paras advance - slowing but not stopping it. It would seem that every man jack of the Tower's defenders are (more than) fully engaged and have no capacity for any other activity.

A rather garbled transmission via a likely wounded Ranger then relayed by Voss states "The Sergeant says the Lady of the Red Hand is gettin' a cab down from the Spire an' she'll be here in a minute with yer man. Oh, an' she rang that auld fella from The Shore".

Meanwhile as SEMC command begin to issue orders to execute their swiftly planned counter attack their allied(?) forces move out. Apparently a word is given and the warbots animate. Anyone expecting "automata infantry" is given a dose of the chills as the warbots use their grav propusion to provide themselves with both mobility and cover. Each "squad" performs orbiting maneuvers about its axis of advance and as they move up the 'bots open accurate fire. They first engage the squad stopped by the Gatehouse's firepower and using brutal logic simply engage anyone who isn't dead - until they are. Their weaponry must be high tech XRay lasers as there are no audible ballistic reports nor visible beams to accompany the mystifying advancing "ballet" of the bots. Instead Paras either just lifelessly collapse or on occasion spectacularly become mostly superheated pink mist. As the last of that squad dies anyone further expecting "monotasked dumbness" suffers a further challenge to their preconceptions as the 'bots instantly and collectively switch fire to the enemy squad to their left (south) and drop another four Paras. Continuing to maintain their range advantage the orbiting 'bots cynically(?!?) halt before crossing the north/south taxiway. A moment's tactical reflection realizes that this will keep the Paras out of optimum range for their own ACRs while their Zhodani lasers remain at effective range.

Freya continues her shooting spree, this time just popping up for a snapfire at the nearest target...

Gauss Rifle, Full Auto, Short Range, Snapfire: (Skill + DEX + Auto): [2d6+7]=8+7=15

Whether that is a hit on the pinned group or not she has to evaluate from the replay function as she ducks quickly.

Frank

See the deathly dance of the robots, he shifts position to face the gatehouse and addresses those in the immediate area

"Ladies and gentlemen, I don't see why the robots should have all the fun, let's assist them in exterminating the vermin."

He opens fire with his rifle, choosing a target in the least damage enemy squad.

On the command channel

"Voss, get an active lock on that ships boat with the missile defense system. Tell them to hold their position and to land when ordered. Make it clear that any other action will get them the honour of being the first active test of the system."

Shocked by the efficiency of the droids Klaus eyes the remaining hostiles looking for the more tightly grouped force as he fits a grenade to his ACR and breaks out of the lift area closing on the launching the grenade at the centre of the group. He then dives to the ground taking advantage of any debris he can see

Jess, watching the robots go into action, comments to no-one in particular: Just like in the Holo’s. Glad they’re on our side.

Rising: Up an’ at ‘em lads, pile it on.

Leading her troopers, stooped, keeping low and weaving, she advances on the VDV, firing as she goes.

'Ave some, yer Frellers.

Jess' intent is to add to the shock effect of the robot attack and attempt to achieve a "morale-kill", by rapid advance (covered by the fire of Frank and Klaus) and volume of fire. Her initial goal is to bound forward to the next nearest VDV casualties, go prone there, and make a new assessment.

To Hit: [_2d6]=(3+1)=4 +2 Skill, +1 Dex = 7

Edited, twice.
In case it helps: Tactics: [_2d6]=(3+5)=8 +1 skill, +1 Int

Flight Deck Firefight Round 5

All

Frank sights, shoots and sees that he gets some hits on a Para readying a LAW who is instead forced to move instead of firing. He then takes in the tactical situation.

He sees that the Paras must now surely realise that they are outnumbered, outgunned and outmatched - but still they remain (willfully blindly?) mission focussed and attempt the impossible. Two or three drop back from both the now reduced assault sections as an anti tank rearguard and attempt to engage the warbots with RPGs and underslung grenade launchers. The range is way beyond optimal and the 'bots seem to have no intention of closing it. RAM grenades and RPG/LAW track across the flight apron but find no targets. Meanwhile, the warbots reply with a lethal rolling volley of fire that kills a Para with every hit. He sees that the enemy still attempt to force their assault on the Gatehouse while they are now pursued by a reinvigorated SEMC who, led forward by the QSM, press their enemy hard in a counterattack.

Jess senses the battle turn and properly and ruthlessly leverages the tactical advantage. She sees that the Paras (with surely some degree of tactical blindness?) labour onwards toward the Gatehouse despite the fire from their front but also from the advancing SEMC to their rear and, given the slacking of their suppressive fire, now also from above as the Scout Snipers gamely lean out over the Spire's top to pour in yet more fire. She puts a long burst into a retiring Para and gives him something to limp about.
(NB It's not Int it's Autofire - now there's a message for humanity...  But with the ACR it's +2 :) ).

While Prerna, possibly unsighted holds fire (she would be engaging through HQ/First Squad!!!), her rooftop team are gamely encouraged by what can only be Beau. He stands fully exposed on the ramparts waving his cutlass while encouraging the Recon squad to pour more fire into their stricken foe. Beau is indeed audible on the command net "Ooorah! C'mon marksmen pour it on! Now's not the time for fancy!"

Klaus, casting a glance toward the Spire top, determines that although he hasn't yet met Beau that just might be a Marine! He fires his grenade and although going over his intended target it seems to stagger a Para further forward. He sees events unfold and joins the SEMC's victorious "surge".

Freya also contributes a snapshot which she's sure was on target but is too busy with first aid care to observe the result.

Kit likewise gets a sense that SEMC are on the up as his wound is stabilised then dressed. Ink swims into his consciousness as the pain meds cut in she rapidly says something in what must be Collace subhive then plants a chaste kiss on his cheek muttering what Kit remembers as "You kept us all alive hidalgo when we surely should have died. It is... regalo de muerte..."

The firefight rages on as the Avastan Paras execute their surely doomed assault. Some collapse quite literally shot to pieces while others press ever forward. The few staggering remnants of the leftmost/southern squad seem to at least get within range of a final rush on the southern Gatehouse bastion but just as they throw everyone forwards in a last effort they are all cut down by 30mm autocannon fire from the remaining and apparently still functional APC.

What might now be called the a forlorn hope of the remaining Para squad grimly close on the Gatehouse staggering forward through Ma Deuce fire which has given up any attempt at "controlled bursts" and is well into barrel melting "sustained fire". Another Para drops simply battered into ballistic trauma inside his still whole armour.

Then, amplified by the confines of the road tunnel, a fearsome roar challenges their advance. It's an ursine basso growl pierced by a chilling female keening that is truly unsettling. What must be the remaining fighting strength of the Rangers boils out of the roadway tunnel. They have naturally formed a vague wedge shape headed by a lightly armoured Tourmaline wielding a laser pistol and her axe and Gaughan who, emptying his LAG from the hip on the charge, drops it to draw the falx from his shoulder screaming "Faugh a Ballagh!"

The Paras immediatedly make to counter and engage but those with weapons in hand find they malfunction - and then the "Wild Hunt" is upon them. Their most capable combatant dies as he closes on Tourmaline and, as she screams inchoate rage, is simply driven into the Flight Deck plates by a force that his armour but not his body can withstand. Those Paras who can draw sidearms, fix bayonets or clear their jinxed weapons try to fight on but the advantaged and furious Rangers kill and keep killing, driving through the initial combatants behind the bloody pair of Tourmaliane and Gaughan to dispatch the remainder of the unit. They go hard at their sanguine work until, now just as exhausted as Tourmaline and as bloodspattered and breathless, they meet the advance of First Squad/SEMC HQ.

Behind the furious and bloody wedge walks Lannigan wearing a dusty black coat. Seemingly casual he watches as he walks for the unlikelihood of any enemy still being alive in the Morrigan's wake. He is armed with an underslung gaussrifle.

It would seem that SEMC has not only won a signal victory but are also in possession of the field.

Frank exits the lift and makes his way over to the gatehouse

On command channel:

"Beau, good work, have those on the spire keep an eye out for surprises from the arcology. Voss, keep an eye out for airborne surprises, any response from the ships boat?"

On arrival at the gatehouse:

He nods at Tourmaline "Thank you for your assistance, it was a beautiful sight to behold..." he glances at Gaughan "The two of you work well together" he smiles. "Sargent-Major, in the unlikely event of any survivors, are they going to tell us anything or will their loyalty prevent that? And of course the big question, why didn't they try and retreat, or surrender, when it was obvious they were losing. Is this the end or is there more?"

Freya, checking the Ambulance team's efforts to rescue the injured from the lift structure finds Freddy, Liv and Capt. Domici have things well in hand.

Florence, Dougal, How are you doing with analysing the jamming and comms signals? Any signs of what this diversion was hiding?

Florence and Dougal's Comms and Sensor Scan: [2d6+4]=7+4=11

Taking advantage of the pause in hostilities, Freya returns to the armoury as she awaits her teams' report. Here she tops off her re-loads and grabs some grenades. With the SEMC drones operational she recalls her own drone and, finally, she heads for the EW room and her team.

Freddy. When the casualties are loaded, meet us in the EW room.

Once there, she sets up her own deck and searches for any signs of hacking on the SEMCs networks and external comms systems.

They couldn't retreat, they'd dropped on target. I dunno why they'd not chuck in the towel at the end, though. Probably more frightened of the consequences of surviving than of us. Doubt they'll talk. Not quickly, anyway.

Jess makes a guess: They were tryin' to open the door, doubt it was to get out an' go clubbin'. Means there's somethin' outside they were expectin' to let in. So, no, not the end. Maybe whatever's out there will try an assault anyway, maybe they'll hold off an' try another play later, but there's likely more to come.

Voss replies "We've locked him up with our Target Aquisition Radar. Their pilot must believe we have a firm lock because he surrendered as soon as we hailed him! He's now flying the craft as per our orders, sir. I'll have him land directly". Clearly inputting data and making battle management appreciations as he speaks Voss adds “Getting visual comms now. Ah... well, that would also explain matters... There appears to be an armoured Zhodani aboard holding a gun on the pilot, sir”.

He adds “Sir, we have some more 4DC assets inbound to provide a perimeter and a deterrent to any further hostile action or interference from PDF or Orbital Command. It's their tank destroyer battery and some fighter cover. Standby, sir”.

Voss temporarily combines channels to reply “Go ahead, 4DC orbital asset we have you inbound at military speed”. Frank recognises Colonel Skeets voice “Glad to see you have things in hand down there!” He then addresses Voss “Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby”. Voss replies “Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full”. The “thrum” of something passing through the fortress very fast is felt by all.

Voss registers his chagrin with Frank “Godsdammit – he flew through the superstructure!” Skeet chimes in immodestly with “Best there ever was!”

And of course the big question, why didn't they try and retreat, or surrender, when it was obvious they were losing. Is this the end or is there more?"
A helmetless Tourmaline greets Frank with a hostile glare as she pulls her axe free from a VDV corpse but, then Lannigan joins her and perhaps after a moment of recognition, she greets Frank with a broad cheerful grin. "Colonel Cross, we are well met, ja?" She offers her hand in the warrior's grip and seems a little surprised to note the blood stain extending to her elbow. She wears a high tech "skin suit" and weapons belt which leaves little of her splendid physique to the imagination but she seems careless of any possible immodesty. The sing song lilt of her accent and the distinction of her blond braids reminds Frank of her Swordy heritage and currently she looks very much to have stepped straight out of the telling of a fireside saga. As Lannigan steps closer still he wordlessly displays a "Ratnik" Avastan pattern rucksack before taking Tourmaline's axe from her and beginning to clean it. Giving Lannigan a fond look at odds with the mien of a wargoddess Tourmaline comments "Breaching charges".
The Bindoner wrote: Mon Apr 10, 2023 10:51 am They couldn't retreat, they'd dropped on target. I dunno why they'd not chuck in the towel at the end, though. Probably more frightened of the consequences of surviving than of us. Doubt they'll talk. Not quickly, anyway.

As Jess approaches a flustered Gaughan seems to concentrate his entire focus on not noticing Tourmaline. Seemingly grateful for the distraction he opines "With those charges they'd have been in soon enough. Even with all awry they nearly succeeded. If they'd managed to close in with three or even all four assault squads then I don't think we'd have held the Gatehouse. That would have given them control of the Flight Deck and exfil options via their small craft". Still pondering as he wipes his falx clean he adds "They were brave buggers sure enough but I think their timing was off... It all went wrong for them when yer man The Tartar turned up. Their hitmen weren't ready. I hear they were chasin' folk all about - that can't be how they'd planned it and while that was going off half cocked these fellas were still in their transport. Wasn't that cutter due to land but got waved off when the Colonel froze air traffic? I think that's what did for them. Well, that an' the... allied help... sure those things looked a lot like warbots..."

Frank shakes the proffered hand "Well met indeed, Major."

He listens to Gaughan's thoughts...

"Well, it seems we owe The Tartar and our allies this day, plus lady luck smiled on us... " his face darkens as he thinks of Whiskey " ... well it could have been worse. Let's get the place secured, the wounded treated and see we what we can learn from the pilot of the cutter. Then we need to decide how we respond."

Further allied reinforcement soon arrives in the form of three menacing wedge shaped grav tanks [4DC's anti tank troop]. These are Imperial standard tech with a ten ton displacement and so are not from the Grunt family of (cheaper/airmobile) AFVs. The vehicle's design premise is simple: take a starship laser and accompanying power plant and build a tank destroyer around it. These vehicles also have starship level sensor suites and their secondary armament (4cm High Velocity autocannon or VRF gauss guns) are slaved to point defence systems. No one in their right mind would now attempt another coup de main against the Bartizan using small craft - or even starships.
