That would have been the fastest Dave game player death ever. :)

Just an FYI that I may not be able to update tomorrow. With the group changing course (leaving the tree cave and traveling to Brighton), it didn't occur to me until too late that I will need to completely build out the new map for the area you're about to explore. I actually just finished the map itself, but I will need to go through and add the dynamic lighting to it which will take a fairly significant amount of time.

Of course, it's entirely possible we can extend the role-playing with the goblin for a short bit which would buy me some time to dynamically light the map. Maybe that's what we'll do?

But, just be aware that if I don't manage to get an update in tomorrow, it's only because I'm doing some behind-the-scenes work.

Please start to give some thought to the end game as far as the goblin is concerned. Is he going to continue to travel with the group as a NPC? Are the plans to kill it? Release it?

This decision should be made before the group ultimately continues on.

And, yes, I probably should not be saying this as the DM, but without heavily modification what lies ahead, the current group will be in significant trouble -- especially considering two of the spell casters have already cast their spell for the day.

If anyone has a desire to introduce a second character, now would be the time to do so. Or we could add more players.
Or I could weaken what you're scheduled to face.

We could turn around and some of the party could go back into the goblin hole. :P

This is one of the funniest posts I've read! I literally laughed out loud, while at work, drawing some interesting looks from nearby co-workers. Lol

P.S. Happy birthday, man.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. It's kind of fun to play a self-centered jerk sometimes!

So, about the other thing. Were you expecting us to do something different? Because if not, it seems kind of weird to set up a new plot hook to replace the one that was getting PCs killed frequently, then tell us after it started that it's going to be a TPK if we keep following it. :D

I guess I should have expected the unexpected. A dungeon crawl (which this new hook involves as well) is going to be dangerous for a 1st level party, and I don't think there's any way around that. What I wasn't counting on were the pre-encounters (e.g. goblin slavers, thief) depleting the group of all their MU spells (which is not to say that the spells shouldn't have been cast, or were cast at incorrect times -- they weren't). It will just make things interesting is all.

In truth, this new hook is actually a published module (something I rarely use) that I purchased. I wanted to inject an exciting story into the game (which I think this module has), but I had not fully read it before introducing it. After reading it, there are a few particularly difficult encounters which could be problematic. I will look into leveling them off a bit, but the "big" encounters need to be somewhat difficult or what's the challenge?

I actually have an idea, so disregard my earlier panic attack (but let it serve notice that the mission you're undertaking is not necessarily going to be a cake walk).

That said, if anyone does want to beef up the party with another character, definitely feel free to do so if you'd like. It can only increase your chances of being successful.

Quick vote... I have rolled up a martyr pc to "increase our chance of success".
It can either be a mediocre elf or an above average cleric. So, we have 2 spell casters and 2 healers. What do we need more of? offense or defense?
I could make him a fighter, but dont see the advantage to that over elf...

Please let me know what the plans are here.

You can't have too many sleep spells at lower levels, I say.

That's what I'll go with then.. plus, it makes sense to be on the offensive for a martyr...

Unless anyone one else chimes in with a contrary opinion, I'll assume the party eliminates the goblin and continues on towards the goblin halls.

Fair?

I was waiting for the goblin to respond to the latest comment before acting.
