How the Mighty Have Fallen
Round 17
Ben is alarmed when he rushes to the side of Alec and finds him to be no longer breathing.
* Even though he was thought to be stable, it seems that the poor dwarf has succumbed to his garish wounds. Its possible that it was simply too much to ask of the stout fighter to escape deaths door on the cold, wet, rock floor soaked in brandy and lamp oil. Ben looks down at the poor soul and thinks back to what happened to Earmulf.
Jervis continues to flail away blindly, having no idea that the spell casting demon he is fighting has already hit the floor. He doesn’t strike any enemies this time, but he does nearly chop off Burly’s head as he rushes past the battle, trying to help secure the caster with his sweet magic.
Sorry hedge, you can only move up to 10 feet before casting a spell in the same round.
Doubtful and Keilif gang up on the shield toting smuggler. The druid attempts a distraction tactic as he misses with his club. The cleric takes advantage of the confusion and when the smuggler turns his attention towards Doubtful, he bludgeons him to death from behind with his ornate mace. Jonas does not want to get close to the insane flailing melee. He is also out of magic. He stands where he is and waits for an opportunity to be productive.
Just as Burly arrives on the scene to begin his cantrip, Sanbalet’s eyes pop wide open and he quickly jumps to his feet. He screams like a little girl again and takes off running down the tunnel, trying to escape the certain death of the invading party members.
Actions!
Burly and Jervis can both take their attacks of opportunity on Sanbalet before he flees.
After that happens....there is only room for the first two pursuing members to make a melee attack in the tight confines of the tunnel. (in this case Burly and Jervis, unless positions are switched around)
* Unfortunately, I required Urson to make a system shock roll once per turn due to Alec's deplorable situation. (mostly just trying to keep him involved in the game) The first roll didn't turn out so well.

hearing the demon casters squel of panic Jervis uses it to pinpoint his location and brings his sworddown overhand in an attempt to cut him in half.
[1d20+1] = 15+1 = 16
I am unsure if attack on someone fleeing gives a bonus to hit to counter the -4 or not so I am just posting my base roll
If it does hit
[1d8+1] = 6+1 = 7

Ben is saddened by finding a loyal comrade beyond any aide. With the battle still ranging any mourning will have to wait. He moves further into the caverns to lend what aide he can to any others that may have fallen.

Burly, the Baffled Baker
"Hey, where you going?" Burly hollers when Sanbalet jumps up and takes off running. Instead of casting his cantrip, Burly whirls his staff and tries to at least trip up the fleeing mage.
[1d20] = 7, [1d6] = 3If he gets a +4 to hit from behind...then maybe

Keilif:
The enraged cleric gives pursuit to the fleeing mage. He strikes at the illusionist's legs hoping to prevent his escape.

Doubtful
Afraid of how the party might fare if faced again with Sanbalet in the future (and what if he had surprise on his side next time?), Doubtful takes off to pursue Sanbalet further up the tunnel. He hopes one of the others can stop the man before he has to run too far into the unknown. He grabs the shield to have something to throw at the mage when he gets close enough.

And Then There Were None
Round 18
Ben is saddened to see that the stout dwarf has already passed on, wishing that there was something more he could do. He leaves Alec’s side and heads into the main chamber to see if there is anything helpful he can do in there.
Sanbalet is not able to get far after retreating from the fight. He had initially hoped to make it out of this mess alive but, once he saw his whole crew being decimated, his rage got the best of him. Now he wishes he would have left right away. Doubtful and Keilif try to approach the fleeing mage but with the others already engaged, they can’t get close enough to him to do anything in the confines of the narrow tunnel.
Burly drops his sugar and swings his staff at the fleeing mage instead. He hits the man in the back of the leg as he turns to run away. The blow trips up the mage, causing him to squeal out again. This noise is all that the demon hunting Jervis needs to hear. He also rushes forward, still completely blind mind you. The fighter’s instincts seem to be getting even better honed as his blow lands perfectly, nearly splitting Sanbalet’s head wide open under his shiny metal cap. The illusionist stops whining after that blow. He stops breathing as well.
Again the cavern complex grows eerily quiet once the din of battle has diminished. The heavy breaths of the adventurers and the plopping sounds of dripping water is all that can now be heard inside the damp cave.

Ben looks around at the aftermath of the pitched battle, shaking his head in disbelief and whispering "Holy Shit" is all he has to say...

Keilif:
With the demise of Sanbalet, Keilif's battle rage subsides. He lowers his mace, and his shoulders sag with the realization of Alec's parting.
The sea priest turns and slowly walks back to his fallen companion. He kneels and searches for a pulse, but none is found. "He has been called home," Keilif whispers as he gently lowers the dwarf's eyelids.
He then stands and makes his way back to the beach where he utters a prayer to Shiliel and stoops to retrieve a palmful of seawater. Keilif returns to Alec and sprinkles the water over his still form.
"We cannot leave him here," he says solemnly.

Burly, the Beaten Baker
Breathing hard, Burly feels the bile rise in his stomach when Jervis' sword literally brains the evil mage. He has to look away quickly and take several deep breaths. "Jervis...there are no more enemies standing, my friend. You can lower your bloodied sword. Appears we have won the day...for what it's worth."
Burly thinks about checking the mage's dead body...but with the blood and gore pooling around the man, Burly just can't do it. Instead, he takes Jervis by the arm and leads the warrior to a place to rest for a moment.

At burly's words jervis drops his sword and shield and lets his shoulders slump as he digs his palms into his eyes.
He blinded me, the demon wizard blinded me......
his voice trails off

Doubtful
Looking at Sanbalet's body, Doubtful shakes his head. I would have preferred to capture him, not kill him. We still have so many questions that need answering. He listens for a moment further up the tunnel to see if anything else may be coming this way. If he hears nothing ominous he will go back down the tunnel to see how people are faring.
Upon reaching Alec he kneels by the body and says a quiet prayer to Pelor, closely followed by silently berating himself for not keeping everyone safe. He will help to place the body in the boat to take back and lay him to rest in a proper place. Then he returns back up the tunnel to investigate.

Ben shakes off the surprise of the battle and it's consequences - and it's seeming victories. He'll also help to put Sabalets body into the boat - as well as - riffle through this clothes and person for items of value that can help fund the teams resupply once back in town.

"Not to worry," Burly says.
"It's probably only temporary. You want some water to help wash them out?"
Burly hands Jervis his waterskin, and if needed, will help the warrior wash out his eyes.
While doing so, Burly constantly looks at the hallway, hoping like hell nothing else comes upon them...

The group gets to work after a short breather, hoping that no more smugglers show up. Unfortunately for the unconscious and badly wounded Umrick, the party completely ignores him as they tend to the dead body of Alec first and foremost. The gnome lies on the floor in nearly the same state as the dwarf was when he passed on into the Great Hall.
Burly is able to calm the exhausted and blind Jervis, assuring him that his ailment is most likely only temporary. Jervis rubs his eyes till they ache but, he gets no sensation back whatsoever. Applying cool water doesn't even help them. The mage leads him to one of the chairs where he can sit out of the way while the others search.
Keilif and Doubtful take great care in the handling of their now dead friend Alec. They spend a lot of time praying and prepping before finally placing his body in the boat to await their departure. The dark night sky above them is a pleasant sight after just escaping what might have been their own rocky tomb. The pairs gentle and kind gesture is a great tribute to how much Alec meant to the group. If they only cared that much about all of their fellow adventurers.
Ben is a bit taken back by the results of the battle. He checks out the body of Sanbalet and finds a few baubles. He has a thin yet very ornate dagger strapped to his right forearm and two normal daggers at his belt. His robes and shoes are plain and his gashed open metal skullcap is thin and cheaply made, it is also covered in blood and brain matter. He has two small belt pouches. One is filled with odds and ends that can only be his spell components. The other has a small stone, three pretty gems, 5 gold coins, 10 silver coins, a small key, and a pair of dice.
A lot of attention is placed on keeping watch on the dark ongoing westward tunnel but, so far nothing has emerged from it..........yet.

Ben pockets the items for examination later. With the body secure in the boat he will sweep the area and seek out those comrades that aren't accounted for and apply what aide he can.

Keilif:
With all of the chaos that has recently ensued, Keilif looks on in horror as he finally realizes that the gnome, Umrick, lies in a pool of his own blood and is in dire need of the priest's ministrations. He rushes over to offer assistance, but being out of blessings, all the young acolyte can offer is a cleansing and binding of the man's wounds. He says a prayer to Shileil and hopes his efforts are not in vain.

Doubtful
Doubtful goes to see if he can help Keilif with Umrick's care. He speaks to the others to gather their thoughts. We need to rest and regain our strength. But I hate to lose the ground we gained here in the cave. Do you think it would be safe enough to rest here and then continue inwards or should we go back to town and come back later?

Burly, the Bloodied and Beaten Baker
Unable to do much else, Burly sits with Jervis while the others run back and forth.
