Severi is useless at range, so he's going to go in with the PCs who seek melee combat.

Well, this isn't going great. I guess we just have to hope they bork their morale roll.

Thurgan, dwarf

Thurgan pricks his thumb with the wire on his sword and uses its power to boost his dexterity and make him able to dodge the orcs arrows better while he advances towards them sword readied to strike.

Meanwhile . . .

On the other side of the underbrush, the cleric Vanco Basou observes as the orcs move in to slay their captives. Without warning, the orcish leader gasps in pain as a preternaturally smooth sword blade protrudes from its chest, whilst behind him a grim and determined looking veteran appears from behind a cloak of invisibility! The orc staggers, but does not fall, as his minions look on in horror and surprise.

This is happening at the same time; just wanted to give phil a chance to chime in. I'll resolve this evening.

Quint Kacie
Caught in a hail of arrows and unarmored to boot, Quint frantically looks for some cover, any cover, he can find. Behind a tree would be best, but even back behind the soft cover of the brush will have to do. His sling still dangles from his hand, but until the orcs close some of the distance, they are still beyond the range of his simple weapon. He watches the enemy approach and will begin firing stones once they are close enough.

Rounds Three and Four

Vanco grabs a fallen tree branch and swings it in a short, compact arc that staves an orc's head in, just as Rhys finishes off the orc chief. The remaining three orcs roar in anger and counterattack. The unarmored cleric dealt a stinging blow, while Rhys parries the two attacking him and ripostes, catching another burly orc in the throat and slaying it. The remaining two orcs quail, now that the odds have been evened, and toss down their blades in an attempt to flee.

The other adventurers rush forward, quickly halving the distance between them and their enemies. Arrows fall about them; one of the freed captives falls forward, dead, but Severi gives a rousing shout that urges the others on. The archers drop their bows and draw their blades, joining the main line of orcs as it surges forward to meet the brave adventurers. The two sides meet; a captive takes a non-fatal gash to the forehead. An orc just barely dodges a blow from Tev that would have separated head from body, but two others are not so fortunate as Severi and Thurgan cut them down like wheat in the field.
We're moving pretty fast, so I went ahead and puppeted phil's PC. Vanco takes 6 damage, but the two remaining orcs failed their second morale check. With the other group, there are now 7 orcs still standing, the three PCs, and three normal, unarmored humans.

Severi howls in barbarous glee, and casts his sword about like a man striking at a cloud of hornets.

Thurgan, dwarf

Thurgan keeps striking out at the orcs swinging his sword to drop as many as he can. "Flee before you all die, orcish swine".

Quint Kacie
Once the orcish archers join their comrades in melee combat, Quint reappears from behind the cover he had found and moves towards the line of combat, getting close enough to be within sling range of the orcs. If any can be targeted without risking the party members in melee, he attempts a shot. Otherwise, he'll try to help any of the captives as well as he can.

Hefting his improvised club, Vanco shouts out to locate the apparent rescuers and rally the captives. If he can reach any orcs easily, he'll attack them, otherwise he tries to get the captives together.

Round Five

Rhys bounds after the fleeing orcs, easily running them down. He slays both of them before they are able to run out of sight of the rest of the party. Vanco, rounds up his fellow captives and exhorts them to have hope. Clearly, the courageous cleric commands great respect, for they calm down instantly and begin braining fallen orcs, in the off chance they still live.

Severi and Thurgan both slay the orcs they face; Tev is sparring with a wily, wizened orc who dodges his every blow. It matters not, for the remaining orcs quail before the onslaught, throw down their weapons, and scatter in all directions.

There are six orcs remaining, all are fleeing. That went better than expected. phil, I am going to say that Vanco doesn't have his holy symbol, either. Technically, nothing in the rules says clerics need their symbol to cast spells/turn undead.

Severi encourages the men with axes to run down and slay all fleeing orcs. He tries to assist, but suspects that he will not be able to overtake the enemy due to his burden of armor.
I think Orcs move at 90. The woodsmen should be able to move at 120.

Tev Meren, Fighter

Tev doggedly persists with his orcish opponent until he slays the brute. He's a stalker of men; he's not going to let an orc, no matter how wily, wizened, or wry it is, escape his weapon's whammy.

Pursuit

The woodsmen take off after the fleeing orcs, with the slower adventurers not far behind. The unencumbered men quickly catch the orcs, and strike one down immediately, whilst another one is gravely wounded. The orcs turn and draw long, wicked knifes, engaging the woodsmen in a desperate attempt to fight free. Two of the men have blood drawn by the creatures, and do little damage in return, but are successful in delaying the orcs until Severi, Tev and Thurgan rush up.

The orcs are quickly dispatched, but not before another woodsmen is slain.

Returning the main party, it is determined that fifteen of the captives have survived, one of whom introduces himself as Vanco Basou, a cleric from Threshold -- not of the Church of Karameikos, but of the smaller, yet older, Church of Traladar. He seems a doughty sort, capable of handling himself in battle.

Severi Silvertongue, Elf

Severi confronts the woodsmen with the realities of the situation, and suggests in no uncertain terms that their best hope for survival is to attach themselves to the adventurers. He suggests that they take anything from the orcs which can possibly be used, and then to separate the orcs' heads from their bodies and provide them with a like quantity of sharpened staves. Severi intends to decorate the road with orc-heads on spikes in order to dissuade any investigation as to the location of this party.

Particularly, he recommends that any foodstuffs or wineskins that the orcs might have brought with them, they be relieved of.

He suggests that when these activities are completed, that the group take the mules and decamp to the forests a mile or two south, to tend their injuries and plan for further assaults on the goblinoid menace.

Rhys the Plunderer

Rhys returns to the larger orc corpses and checks the supposed leader types for anything of interest.

Gold is of no interest to him right now and he feels any coin they find on the orcs be passed to the lumberjacks to help aid their morale.

Thurgan agrees with Severi's plan. "Let us also send a secret scouting mission again tomorrow to see if the orcs on the island have been weakened enough for us to be able to try and capture it".
