Chapter 4: Shadows and Piercing Light
Re: Chapter 4: Shadows and Piercing Light
Elethil stands aghast at one of the humans not only avoiding the shelves full of what appear to be dark magical items, but using them! It is a foolhardy move, he thinks as he backs away.
Can Elethil enter melee, or are there too many people between him and the spiders?

Re: Chapter 4: Shadows and Piercing Light
There are at least 3 fighters between you and the spiders (Deceidon, Captain Hal, and Sunshine, the archer guard possibly). If you go into melee, you may risk getting hit by thrown or fired projectiles (arrows and mystery jars).Zhym wrote:Elethil stands aghast at one of the humans not only avoiding the shelves full of what appear to be dark magical items, but using them! Sunshine
As the spiders close Sunshine moves his left flank position as wide as possible. He keeps moving while he fires his bow. He hopes one the the spiders will pursue him.
He hums his tune in a key that matches the twang of his bow string.
Bow [1d20+6] = 4+6 = 10 Damage [1d6] = 1
Bow [1d20+6] = 3+6 = 9 Damage [1d6] = 4
Of course, the fumes are a distraction to the master archer.

Elethil stays out of the range of mystery projectiles and picks up the cryptic writings and the book for later analysis.

The hovering fanged-skull has been obliterated but now poisonous fumes hang around Whitsell....
Roll for Actions and state your intentions. Time for round 3!
Whitsell apparently cannot regain his composure in time to avoid the fumes.

Alright, I will provide an update tomorrow morning. I'm finding that I cannot post every single day like I want to, and some days are proving more difficult than others, today being one of them. I apologize in advance, but know that I will try to keep my posts within the 2 or 3 day range, multiple times a day if I'm doing really good!

Re: Chapter 4: Shadows and Piercing Light
Whitsell stumbles back a bit towards the earthen wall and collapses to a sitting position. The fumes take over his body and he cannot seem to move (will last 3 turns) [1d3] = 3. In the process of breathing in the poisonous fumes, he loses 2 hit points [1d3] = 2.
The air surrounding the broken jar now breathable again, Deceidon takes notice of the contents potency and decides to use it against the spiders. He grabs an armful of the jars (can carry three at the moment) and lobs them at the arachnids. The first jar hits the area just behind the spiders and explodes in a shrapnel of... gems! Gem Burst [5d4] = 15 15 gems explode into the bodies of the spiders, dealing 5 points of damage each, taking each one down effectively and quickly. Had Captain Hal not run when he saw what he thought to be a flask of oil hurtling towards the spiders, he may have recieved some damage as well! Two jars remain in Deceidon's arms, and whatever is inside them, it is certainly more than just toxic fumes.... what was going on in that labratory you wonder? Dare you even pursue that line of thinking? As the fight comes to a temporary halt, Captain Hal and the others stare incredibly at the spiders, and then at Deceidon. "What.... just...happened?" says the archer guard, speaking for the now deadly silent Captain Hal.
Meanwhile, back at the hidden room, Elithil is quick to snatch up a few things for himself, mainly scrolls. As he goes to collect the open book, he finds that it is already gone...

Re: Chapter 4: Shadows and Piercing Light
Whitsell sits there, frustrated with his own futility, wondering how long this paralysis will last.
Uh folks. I need some help. I cant seem to move a muscle. That jar was a bit powerful, I must say. Anyone know a cure?

Deceidon's eyes widen at the effect of the thrown jar. "We have encountered magic under this mountain, so it seems right to use magic against it." He gathers however many jars he can into a large sack.
He approaches one of the spiders, turns it over with his foot, and sees if he can extract poison from its venom sacs to coat his arrow tips.
"Has anyone found an orb?" Deceidon asks urgently. "We must find it. Look again."

Flynn, fighter
"Amberlynn, can you help Whitsell?" asks Flynn.
The fighter again ransacks the room for an orb or crystal.

Re: Chapter 4: Shadows and Piercing Light
Amberlynn, finding that the situation is currently safe, rushes over to Whitsell and starts to scrounge through her bag of leaves and ointments. After checking his eyes and pulse, she nods and confirms that the worst of it was over. "I can treat cuts and burns, but poisons are a bit out of reach right now, at least with my current supplies. The poison is very similiar to spider venom, and it is still in your system. I have no way of drawing it out, but you do not appear to be in immediate danger of dying though, rest assured. Give it a few more minutes, you will regain movement soon enough."
You rummage through the room again, with Sunshine and Captain Hal still showing greating disgust about the whole manner. Even Elithil seems put off by the whole situation. Knowing that there could be useful magics in the jars or poisons to exploit, Deceidon starts to bag more of them, or at least the ones that aren't cracked.[1d10] = 3 You find three more jars during this search, one of them in particular looking very sinister, a dark mist floating inside. No signs of the orb can be found though, just the broken ones on the shelves.
"To fight magic with magic? Are you MAD!?!" The captain exlaims in the other room. "Potent they may be, those magics will only corrupt you all in the end, turning you into the monsters and villians that you currently pursue. And believe me.... I WILL cut you all down if it comes to it. We were taught as a people to stay away from all magic, and for good reason too! To think that you would just throw those lessons away because the king isn't watching..." He turns around and walks away with his archer guard, throwing his arms up in the air as he continues to ramble on about things like "treasonous rabble" and "mad men". Apparently you are not on Hal's good side right now...
You are successful in extracting the venom, putting in one of the metal potion flasks in Deceidon's inventory. There is enough venom to coat 12 arrows.Grognardsw wrote:Deceidon's eyes widen at the effect of the thrown jar. Sheaving his "Dungeon Master" Sunshine follows Deceidon's example and starts to harvest the poisons from the venom sacs as well. He shows a steady hand as he makes the appropriate incisions, as if he has had experience with this before. Storing it in a flask of his own, he retrieves his arrows and waits for the group outside the hidden laboratory. A look of disgust hangs on his face though as he too shares a similiar contempt for the group's actions.
"As much as I do not like the man, he made his point well and I am in agreement. Magics are foul and corrupting. They all should be eliminated one way or another. No good can come from this." He looks at Deceidon especially, when he says this, hoping his glare will reach the man.

Whitsell feels somewhat relieved by her optimism, though he has no idea how she would know. He looks around at the jars. Just please move me away from them before you start to touch 'em. I didnt like seeing em before and I dont want to have any more break open near me.Rukellian wrote:Amberlynn, finding that the situation is currently safe, rushes over to Whitsell and starts to scrounge through her bag of leaves and ointments. Rand moves towards the walkway to the greater room where the Captain is currently ranting, "I'm usually not on the right side of the law but he makes a point, disregarding the magic part just dealing with things that you have no knowledge of is asking for punishment..." He picks up one of the gems that exploded from the jar on the spiders and looks over it, trying to determine if it is a genuine gem or at least a good enough one to fake a merchant.

Sunshine approaches Rand and gives him an empty small sack. The former banker says, "they look valuable to me -- not super valuable, but enough -- bag em up".

Rand gives him a simple nod and begins putting all of the spilled gems into the sack before tying it off. He will stand and wait for the others.

Seeing the gems collected and room searched again for the orb, Deceidon says, "Let us be on our way then," motioning to the door. He lights another torch and takes up the rear.
As he closes the door behind him, Deceidon tosses the torch onto a pile of scrolls and books.

Rand glanced at the torch being thrown before the door closes but says nothing. He will resume his spot in the group and continue on with them.
