General Chatter
Re: General Chatter
Oh cool! I am super excited about this. I haven't ever used the random generator, either.
Also for OOC clarity - I am happy to color floridly on archeology if you let me. If you can say if this is earlier iron age (Equus) or older mysterious bronze age (Mashripal) in its origin, and include any outline you like, I can color detail in those lines with a "yes, and" approach. (If you say what we find, I'll extrapolate meaning that may or may not be accurate at your discretion. If you want me to also add physical detail [oh, a frieze!], let me know.) The actual "who or what lives here now" is purely your scope.

I am totally cool with that, would welcome it actually.Marullus wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:17 pm Oh cool! I am super excited about this. I haven't ever used the random generator, either.

I just need to take the bits I've randomly rolled on the origin of the Ruin and convert them so they match this world's background. I haven't yet figured out if this place is merely old or actually quite ancient.
Re: General Chatter
I am also laughing to myself because we talked about how you wanted to find a dungeon but then you decided to head toward the swamp, which was the exact opposite direction from the closest dungeon. Luckily, the ridge caught your eye and lured you back to the Ruin!
Re: General Chatter
Sometimes it just works out that way.
Re: General Chatter
Just so we're clear on the plan...
Gars is going in without a light source and then the others are following him... also without a light source?
I am fine with taking your time to detect enchantments but it's going to provoke wandering monster checks after a while.

Re: General Chatter
I think the plan is that Gars will lead with his "I see in the dark" skill...but we ought to have a plan to either be able to follow him (rope ourselves together?) if we want to have a chance to surprise anybody, or one of us should hold a torch or something...

Re: General Chatter
I can hold a torch with flint and steel ready to light it. Rather not be tied together, if he finds a pit the hard way it wouldn't go well.
Re: General Chatter
I assumed the ladies-with-long-sticks would light a torch but keep me at the edge of their dim light, coming behind so they don't lose him.
Otherwise, we can just do one room at a time?

Re: General Chatter
That works for me.
Re: General Chatter
Yeah, I like the idea of torches with Gars at the edge of it. Might be best for Ciarra to carry her lantern, because she can set it down if we come to combat or anything else.

Re: General Chatter
Good point on the lantern, she will do that.
Re: General Chatter
So the plan is that Gars enters a room by himself. Following 30 feet behind is Lavin and then directly behind her is Ciarra with a lantern.
Every time the party moves to a new room, Gars goes in by himself and spends one turn Detecting Magic. The others lag behind so Gars can be in darkness. Then the second turn, the others move in and take their own actions, if any. Then you pick a new direction and move on.
Sound like a plan?

Re: General Chatter
Sure. We'll come running if he shouts.

Re: General Chatter
Sounds good.
Re: General Chatter
Quick note: I have not been following the rules for Foraging when the party attempts to butcher an animal you've killed. Unless someone knows of a better way to handle it, let's assume those rules apply.
I'll decide the number of forage units based on the size of the animal. Foraged food is unpreserved and will spoil in three days. Smoking or drying it requires a day's worth of firewood (which must itself be foraged unless you've already got it with you) and a half-day's labor.
Skinning an animal also requires a Wis/Survive check against a difficulty determined by me based on the animal. Most normal animals will require no check at all. Giant animals will be DC 6. More unique animals or monsters will have higher DCs. Skinning requires a half day's labor, possibly a quarter day's labor if the animal is small.

Re: General Chatter
Cool - thanks for clarifying. Do Legates exist in your world, then? (p.358, ascension to demigod powers for level 11+ play) Do Magical Workings exist? (p.90, artifact locations with powers like "empoelwer a bloodline with X ability)
Re: General Chatter
A reminder that, generally speaking, we're not using anything from the default WWN setting. However, if you want to have Legates exist, or Magical Workings, I can work them in.
Re: General Chatter
I'm fine with whichever way you go. I was extrapolating from your descriptions with Mashripal being analogous to the Bronze Age IRL and with Legate-level power, and with Equus history being like the restart into the Iron Age. This just allows a framework and also contrivances for easy GMing - inexplicable wonders from a Legate-power-level past provide grist for ruins and mysteries we can explore while keeping it out of the realm of PCs.
What Do You Do In This Game?
Some heroes pursue their goals through scavenging
the remnants of a more glorious past. The ancient sorcerer-
kings raised mighty cities and wrought wondrous
marvels, many of which are still functional enough to
be precious to modern humanity. Adventurers willing to
plumb their ruined cities or search their ancient strongholds
can come out bearing a king’s ransom on their
backs, or discover artifacts that could shift the balance
of power among nations. Given the perils awaiting in
such places, however, there are always far more who go
in than ever emerge again.
Re: General Chatter
An early heads up that I am going on vacation from 8/5 to 8/12. I may post occasionally but more likely that the game is paused for a week.
Re: General Chatter
Enjoy your vacation.
