Torix would like to do it from the top to use archery.

That makes sense. Maybe Torix can do that while guarding the wounded Amethu up top while the others go hand-to-hand down below. Zahra can use the rope to escape if things become iffy.

It sounds like they're wolves, right? Four legs, poor at scaling cliffs. So how about we group at the foot of the cliff, backs against it so as not to be flanked by growling and snapping flanker wolves. With one archer above, putting the slow but steady hurt on them. Torix with Dex 17 to Cruloc's 13 is probably the better odds-on archer, and Cruloc the better melee brawler.

Can't argue with that.

It seems that Pict Torix is better with a bow than Cimmerian Cruloc. Dex 17 vs 13. Do your best, Cimmerian!

Friendly reminder:
When firing arrows at a monster that is engaged in melee with a friend, there's a chance that you could hit your friend, as per DMG p.63.
Note: this chance is based on the ratio of friends to foes in the melee, not your to-hit roll.

To avoid this risk, you might target wolves that are not adjacent to your friends.

Yes. At least one. The maps shows the the wolves mid-charge, having just burst into the firelight.

As per the DMG, spears set against a charge require a roll to hit. Success means you double the rolled damage. Good luck!

This is an observation regarding the firing into melee rule.
I reckon the chance of hitting a friend might be lower if the archer is above the action rather than at ground level.

Nah, I wouldn't shoot down at the wolf on its hind legs, for fear of hitting the man. Especially if I was behind the man, like Torix is behind Cruloc.

As per DMG p. 63, the rule about firing into a melee isn't due to line of sight. It's because during the chaos of a melee, all combatants are shifting, maneuvering, feinting, lunging, swinging (and the wolves snapping, pouncing and leaping in a wild frenzy). All of which remains relevant even if the archer is above ground level.
