Leon is able to watch, and listen to, nearly everything going on in and around the ship. The Serpent, like all Oghman ships with their reliance on slave crews, has a thorough security and surveillance suite.

Cameras, with audio, cover almost all of the interior and immediate exterior. Even the staterooms have surveillance monitors, although those systems need the authorisation of the Captain and Raid Leader for access when the occupant selects Privacy Mode (Slave quarters have a limited version of privacy, if two slave anklets occupy the room simultaneously no authorisation is necessary to open the feed).

There are, notoriously, some areas of the ship not covered by video. Spaces behind or between machinery, maintenance crawlspaces, equipment lockers, the gunnery loft. Lockers, access panels and Gunnery hatches require entry codes however, and slave anklets are radio-locatable, limiting their utility as hiding places.

Responding to a nod from Eno Raven declares “Your Mistress is here. Let us see if your gift brings you favour and puts her in a mood to spend well for our treasures”.

Mistress? Not my type. Captain.

Raggi drains his horn.

I’d better come with you. Not everyone “gets” Sal at first, and she could probably use someone who understands you Oghmen.

Turning to Manfred:

You’re the man that Theev ship, Lady Ice, is here for? Manfred? Sal said she’d like to meet you. About a bit of business. Now is a good time, if that suits you.

Manfred replies: Sure, it’s good to meet new faces. Hope you’re Captain Sal hasn’t brought you here to make you rich. The only big fish out here need a fleet to catch them, it’s no place for independents.

Raggi replies: Odd that you should use that word. A fleet is what Sal wants to talk of...

Manfred and Raggi follow Raven, talking together amiably, but cautiously, as newly acquainted criminals will.

Arnwulf Goren Lugersen
...on a whim, he wears his skull helmet and walks past them as they go about studying the Artefacts.

That is all he wears mind, head to toe he is naked apart from his weapon belt and shotgun dangling between his legs, keeping his privacy.
Scarlett Sal appears not to notice Arnwulf as she strides across the hangar to the displayed objects, fixated on them.

Aedzveis does notice. Her ears flatten, her tail twitches into a leftward wag, and she growls quietly, her lips pulling back slightly to reveal the points of her fangs. She does not alter her stride, or leave Sal’s side, but she is more alert in general, and keeps track of Arnwulf in particular.

Sal, without looking, snaps: Be nice. They may be strange, but they invited us to buy things. They won’t hurt me.
Upon seeing Sal and Aedzveis Raven appears genuinely fascinated by the Vargr and, with perhaps more base instincts, equally intrigued by the merchant. She gives a twitch of her lips and then neither seems to notice Arnwulf or make any comment on his appearance (just adding to the surreal)

She introduces herself to both and to Sal adds “I'm surprised. You are grannligr - as slim as your blade. Does it really serve to keep pirates off?”

Aedzveis, no longer growling, returns Raven’s interest. Her tail flicks from side to side in short strokes, and her head tilts.

Raggi, you found a sister?

Sal takes in Raven, an appraising look. She smiles.

A new pin.

Keep them off? It brings them in. And, if they get too close, the blade may be slender, but it is sharp. It can cut threads short, sever them from their pins to drift, lost, in space.

She tilts her head, a gesture similar to the Vargr’s, flicks her eyes over Raven, the ship, the cargo. She notices Tiv, then Arnwulf, the slaves. Double-takes back to Arnwulf, grins, and turns back to Raven.

I was going to say image is everything in this trade, but perhaps you already know this. I thought you were just relics, but that Thingvallir is more typical than I expected. You will not take beads for your stones, will you?

Perhaps you can even give me the numbers on your artefacts. Location. Date. Where to put the pin, what thread to tie.

Edited (extra Raggi)

Note: The crew and their guests have the services of the Serpent's translation routine. Scarlett Sal and Aedzveis do not. They will understand Imperial/Galanglic. Raven knows that, as does Tiv.

Tivali looks up from his hand computer and his messages to Umimmer (to gauge his ETA at the Cunning Serpent) to see Sal and Aedzveis in the hood.

Ah Sal. Good to see my joint venture partner has arrived. May I introduce you to the Cunning Serpent’s Skippare, Kar Tolersen, and Raid Leader, Raven Sorrow. Raven…Sal. Sal, please feel free to browse and make what purchases you wish. However, before I leave you with Raven, I wish to tell you something. Our terms called for a meeting here in six weeks. I intend to sail with this crew soon. I hope to be back for that meeting; but in the event I fail to return, my best friend Niels Nielsen will certainly be here to represent me. He is a clan raid ship Captain, and he is read into the initial phase of our deal. I will make him fully aware once I see him here in port on Blackrock soon. If that is agreeable, then I leave you to shop.

Aedzveis, please refrain from chasing your tail in here. There are some delicate items on the tables. And please leave the floors excrement free.

Snickering at Arnwulf, he wanders off to set up Umimmir’s visit which is expected any moment.

After getting Tiv's expert opinion on the goods in the hold, Remington had intended to retire to the safety of engineering, ideally somewhere under the jump drive that was comfortable yet inconvenient to reach. The growing density of senior officers and important looking visitors in the hold put the kibosh on that plan. He figured that, if nothing else, the engine-seer cum appraiser ought to be around when the haggling started, or there might be some pointed questions asked of him later. That said, given the thick cloud of madness swirling around Arnwulf and Raven's usual reaction to a handsome lady, he decided that really the best place for him to be was inconspicuously merged with the wall of the hold (or as inconspicuously as anyone in a grubby, safety orange vac suit could be.)

For myself I only weave with intestines and use heads for weights on my loom*. So it seems I can claim but a much smaller realm: the mere reach of my blade and yet I am the absolute ruler of it”.

(OOC: * Raven presuming much (promotion to Valkyrie) and borrowing from their activities in the Darraðarljóð).

If you wish to deal in information for your loom then I will only trade”. Then, based on the conversation she overheard between Manfred and Raggi, Raven Sorrow makes the instinctive leap that fate demands “I command the raiding actions of a ship. Snickering at Arnwulf, he wanders off to set up Umimmir’s visit which is expected any moment.
Sal aknowledges Kar with a respectful Captain.

To Tiv she nods and replies: It's prudent to plot an alternate. Sound navigation. Captain Neils Neilsen. Her tablet pings softly as she saves a note. New pin.

Aedzveis, please refrain from chasing your tail in here. There are some delicate items on the tables. And please leave the floors excrement free.
Aedzveis’ lip curls, showing teeth. she mutters: Like I’d give you more filth to fling, azozogh.

Raven smiles – her teeth show. It may be involuntary. She says “You are... interesting - Vargr or Úlfhéðnar? I suppose time will tell. I was once thought Úlfhéðnar”. She glances over at Tiv “It seems I was just annoyed that someone stole my girlfriend”.
I don’t know that word. I’d like to assume it’s a good one, since you own it, but judging by the rest of your people’s attitude, I’ll wait and see.

Raven replies “Are you one of the Norns to style yourself as such a weaver? I am impressed. It would be a bold call for any other to claim to be able to weave Fate for it is known to be implacable. For myself I only weave with intestines and use heads for weights on my loom*. So it seems I can claim but a much smaller realm: the mere reach of my blade and yet I am the absolute ruler of it”.

Sal looks puzzled.

Weave fate? You mean, control the future? No, no. I tie threads of the past together. Follow them back, find where they come from. Find things that were lost, fix them in time and place, plot them, correlate, calculate. They lead to other lost things.

Sal’s face twitches into a grimace of irritation: Tcha, your Thingvallir put this pin and thread metaphor in my head. It seemed to explain things, now it is confusing everyone. Pins mark facts, places. Fixed points of data. Threads link them.

It is much more complicated than that. But, with enough data, enough correlations...

Raven looks Sal straight in the eye as a near smile plays on her lips. She points out the loitering Remington “Have you met my personal Shaman?”
Sal smiles, apparently pleased by what she hears: Fates and Shamans. Oghma and its ways. I thought they were telling me tall tales. People do. They mistake me, think I just collect old stories, believe anything, invent them up to make fun of me. I humour it. Lies have truths at the root, even if it’s only who told them.

You are sincere. I will have to study your world’s stories. I think they must be closer to old Sindal than most.

Your people preserve old data, keep the threads strong and vibrant. Do you do so for the worlds you plunder? No one else does…

Calling over to Remington: Shaman, come over. I want you to talk through the artefacts with me, show me how you value their stories.

Now wearing a wry smile she continues “Thingvallir is a known eccentric and a heretic to boot. We will deal in Imperial credits and yet I am also charged to deal in another currency. You came here to buy artefacts so buy them. If you wish to deal in information for your loom then I will only trade”.

Thingvallir is not what I was told an Oghman was.

Aedzveis snorts

Sal corrects herself: Not entirely what we expected of an Oghman.

I have Credits, but I have gold too. Pure bars. Better for you, I think.

Trade for data? I want the locations, coordinates and dates, provenance, on the artefacts I buy. They are worthless to me as mere objects. Others buy art, I buy history. What do you need?

She glances at the line of objects: Some of those I will buy the numbers and leave you the thing to sell another. Pins and threads matter, correlations. Plotting the course. The signposts I do not need to keep.
Then, based on the conversation she overheard between Manfred and Raggi, Raven Sorrow makes the instinctive leap that fate demands “I command the raiding actions of a ship. The man who trusts my judgement commands many more. Perhaps we have reason to talk?”

Sal looks puzzled: Perhaps. There is a scheme I am working on. It needs ships. I am surprised you don’t already know of it. That is worrying.

Tiv, standing to the side messaging Umimmir, looks up from his computer and says:

I have had pressing matters of another sort. Have not had the time to brief Raven and Kar on that yet...though I will...in private. Many ears reside here.

And he looks around at the cavernous hangar.

Raven replies "We are the heirs of the Dragon. If you want to learn the stories of our travels you should visit the oldest of us. The Serpent may reveal glimpses of her long memory that you can see today with your own eyes. Much aboard is hidden in plain sight. We value it and decipher what we may. As for the goods laid out here Eshlargamet prepares raw finds – she may know more of exactly where they come from on Marduk and Arnwulf plundered the seas there".

She grins "He might yet share his knowledge of the deep. You may learn much and, if you can manage to maintain strict eye contact, no more than you wish to!”

She continues "As for information I am at least wise enough to know what I don't know. So I will therefore seek your well travelled advice on where best to find potential allies among the worlds nearby".

Joke over, he dresses.

"Is Umimmir arriving on board or we are attending an evening feast he is laying on?"

I thought it was the latter?

Having greeted Raggi, Kar happily leaves the tour, and the ale for now, to Raven, knowing that Leon has eyes and ears on everything. Greeting Sal with the courtesy due a Captain, Kar wears his cold face at her suggestion of ignorance as to Lord Hallsteins plans. Summoning Eshergamelat to assist. He watches Sal closely as she appraises the merchandise.

Raggi walks forward:

Captain. Aedzveis. I was talking to Cousin Tiv over there earlier and he invited me back here, so I’ve already had a look over. I can walk around with you.

He hands Sal the sword he chose:

I picked this up. I thought it might make a good show-piece. Good old workmanship, the blade’s still sound.

Sal takes the sword, draws it with a smile and examines the blade:

Sindalian era, definitely. Excellent condition. Some restoration, yes, but just cleaning and sharpening. Good work, minimal, sympathetic. Remarkable preservation. A sealed environment I should judge. Sindalian workmanship, yes, but a non-Empire script inscription, and a non-standard design. Probably a planetary workshop.

Thank you Raggi. I’ll enjoy researching this.

Sal holds the sword with the back of the blade resting nonchalantly over her shoulder.

Aedzveis adds: It’s a wicked looking thing too, should scare any herbivores you show it to.

Raggi looks pleased: Swords are what I know best.

I made another find. Captain Scarlett, meet Manfred Lurker of Theev.

Manfred and Sal shake left-handedly :

Pleased to meetcha Capt’n Scarlett. New to the Outrim, I hear. Raggi tells me you’ve brought your ship across half the Sector, we’ll have to swap stories later. Yours’ll be an interesting one, I’ll bet. I’d’ve thought there were richer pickings up on the Spinward border than out here on the Rim.

Sal replies:
Manfred. I’m not surprised to meet you here. A node of many junctions, your value.

Yes, we should compare charts, see if we can shape we can plot a shared course.

Eshargamelat comes forward when Kar mentions her. Eno is just behind her, bearing another of the ships comm headsets, which she offers to Sal, explaining it is a translation service: Eshargamelat only speaks her own language, and not all of the crew speak yours.

Sal takes the device and starts to examine the objects laid out on display. She is focused entirely on the items, and questions Eshargamelat (and anyone else with information) about each, asking where each was found, and in what condition and how much restoration has been done to each. Once she has established Eshargamelat’s experience with such things, Sal starts to compare notes on the design elements, and how they might indicate the relative age of the items. Sal can read inscriptions in old Sindalian on some items that Eshargamelat cannot. To the casual observer, some of the script is so stylised as to appear to be merely an abstract decorative element.

Sal produces a series of small devices from her pockets to examine things. Her primary tool is a simple jewellers loupe, but she also has a digital magnifier, and what Remington recognises as a hand-held spectrometer and an IISS field chemical analysis device.

Sal is interested in some of the objects, others she passes over quickly.

Kar notes a few reactions:

The missile launcher:

That might be interesting. Makers marks, they will show the location of factories.

The large “metal monster”:

I have seen these, read of them. Quite a common design in the empire, used by local royal guard units.

The arch keystone:

Very common. This one is quite well preserved, I doubt it connects to anything
.

The miscellaneous electrical items:

These broken things are potsherds, I have no interest.

The various items of jewellery from the workshop and shop:

There are pretty things here. No data points, no threads to trace, but craftsmanship.

The coral-encrusted cannon:

Interesting. I wonder what is under that accretion? Sindal had so many weapons. It could be an interesting project.

The chimera statues:

These look like a local cultural item, the symbology is not true Sindal.

The winged lions:

These are an entirely local design, I think. I have not seen them referenced in other Sindalian sites. A pin with no threads.

The small “monster”:

These security robots are common. This one has little interest.

The winged warrior statue:

Ah, Sindalian technology, planetary culture. Empire standard electronics, used on a figure tailored to local taste. It would have looked wonderful. There is a chance some thing can be learned from the remnants.

Carved friezes:

Local. Decorative. A specialist in the world, or a collector of art might care.

The Column segments:

Nothing for me. Mere fragments of structures. Local work.

The section of ship hull plate:

Very nice! Sal runs her whole collection of devices over the plate: Sindalian work. Empire forged… Yes, starship hull, not SDB.

I could use this as a spare part. It has a Jump matrix, it could be integrated into the Rosethorn to repair damage.

She comes to the crates.

1dT Coltan ore, 1dT rounds of timber:

Trade goods. I would not steal these if they were the only cargo on a prize.

The robot shell:

A Sindalian work-bot. Very poor condition. I wonder which factory built it?

Various Crystaliron vehicle panels:

Interesting selection. A span of makers. This panel is from a late-era Empire APC. This is a Sindalian commercial vehicle manufacturer.

Polititians bust:

I have never seen this face. Somebody important on his world who left no trace beyond it.

Ilmenite ore:

More trade-goods.

The crate of household goods:

There are some interesting items among the potsherds. Inscriptions, images. It might be worth a little, and I suppose the rest can be traded.

The crate of plastic drinking vessels:

Potsherds. If there were museums of Sindal they would not show these.

Crate of ceramic drinking vessels:

Lovely work. Perfect condition.

A .5dT crate of small sculptures:

Many potsherds, but there are some interesting objects. That is a trophy from a Star Guard competition. This one is a model of a Star Guard ship, a children's toy probably. There are interesting things, but it will take some sifting.

A collection of items of armour (crated):

There are some good items here. They could be traded, out here in the Void.

The crate of blades:

A large amount of scrap metal with a few good items. There are some inscribed blades that might be interesting. I do not want the spoil, but I could make an offer on the finds.

The security droid:

Not a Sindal design. Perhaps something local to the world. I doubt I will learn much of use from it

.5dT of Kashk:

I do not know what this is, and I doubt I want to know.

2dT of decorative tiles:

These would look wonderful in the galley, wouldn’t they?

The Dragon Emperor’s bust:

Standard image of the ruling Dragon Emperor. It’s possible there might be something to learn, but these are common. Every public building had one. Of course, most were defaced or destroyed, so this one is in unusually good condition.

The lump of encrustation with a golden figure partly revealed:

I would like to finish uncovering that. It may not be a point on my plot, but it would be a pleasant pastime and good practice.

The empty barrel:

Good Sindalian Crystaliron. It might be useful.

The hand-mirror:

Local production. Nice enough, but it will show me nothing I do not already know.

The items from Zinat’s house are next.

The decorated crockery:

Period designs, but local, planetary, cultural artefacts. I doubt I’d learn much.

The collection of small sculptures:

Mostly local cultural artefacts. The Dragons might be interesting. These kings, they would help with timelines. Some of these Marduk gods are made off-world, I recognise a maker's mark from Noricum.

The armour:

Sindalian polycarbon cuirass. Empire made, local detail. Still wearable. There will be something to learn here, perhaps.

The weapons

A lot of potsherds. Some blades are nice enough, but no data. - Raggi, if this is where you chose from, you picked the only blade I would want.

The jewels and jewellery:

Very pretty. Quite tradeable, coloured stones, beads and baubles. I could weave a story around them too. Ah, yes, assay and maker marks. Yes, I could trade these.

Rubati stands just behind Raven, taking in the visitors. She asks, conversationally:

The dog-woman, what is she? Not a god herself, I think, but is she sent by one? Is the red-haired woman a priest?

Amused by Tiv's bantering Raven begins concocting a reply when her focus is drawn to the visitors and then interrupted by Rubati's query. Watching the visitors with a fascination equal to that of her stolen priestess Raven replies "Not a god but maybe a battle sister. She is either Vargr - wolf people or Úlfhéðnar - people wolves. Well, people who can put on the aspect of wolves - it's complicated. If she changes back to human form then she's the last one. The red head is a venerable Sage and knows much of the old ways - the ways of the Dragon. It seems she's also some sort of nobility among thieves which is why Manfred knows her. Did you see their strange greeting? You can't be sure of someone's friendship if they don't offer you their sword arm to grip!" Raven mutters ruefully "Unfortunately this might also mean that she is as much of a false sage as Manfred is a false priest...".

Then she frowns and snarls "And make sure you call me Raid Leader when we're in company and address the other ship's officers properly too!"

Manfred and Raggi accompany Sal and Kar as they walk along and through the cargo, Manfred and Sal occasionally exchanging information about religious symbols among the items. Aedzveis walks with them, dividing her attention between the cargo and the Oghman crew, appraising both. Sal makes constant notes and images with her tablet, Aedzveis occasionally tapping with her nail on a fore-arm mounted datapad that rests just above her wrist.

Sal appears not to notice the Marduk captives, other than Eshargamelat, while Aedzveis makes a deliberate study, then disregards them.

Aedzveis’ eyes keep flicking to Remington as the party move through the display. After Sal has looked over all the lots she approaches him: You puzzle me. Your posture is off. You do not quite hold yourself in like a slave, you have not got the confident swagger of an Oghman. Something smells strange.

Rubati listens attentively to Raven’s lesson on wolf/people, and assessment of the pirates. The closing rebuke startles her and, wide-eyed, she responds Yes, Raid Leader, I will remember.

She regains her composure and announces: I am going back to the machine place to learn more, as Raid Leader ordered. She curtseys and, still bowed, backs away, possibly for a little longer than is normal, before turning to run out of sight.

The Blackrock security system alerts the Cunning Serpent and its registered senior crew members to announce: Guests Ummiimir and Soraia request admittance.

Tiv acknowleges the message, makes his excuses and asks Áshildr to attend to fetch Umimmir and Soraia.

He approaches the entrance to the hangar, and with an outstretched hand says:

Please, Ummimir and Soraia, do come in. Welcome to the Cunning Serpent. I am please you have decided to come to peruse this crew's haul. Let me introduce you to Skippare Kar Tolerson. I believe you have previously met Ashildr.

As they walk, he continues: I must apologize about my earlier brusqueness. I suppose it takes much for an heir of the Dragon to learn new, more refined, ways.

Raven shifts to a suitable vantage point from which to observe the interaction of the visitors.

Áshildr replies Coming to Tiv’s message and promptly slides down a ladder from the upper reaches of the hold before loping past Sal, Kar and the rest of the cargo inspection party. As she passes Raven she smiles, bows her head and acknowledges her with a formal: Raid Leader. Still smiling, she joins Tiv at the hangar blast-doors.

Raven smiles, grins and then laughs in victory. Her instincts to not put at hazard all she had with Áshildr against a dalliance with the doe eyed priestess were right! As she watches Áshildr's departure she absently checks her sidearms and instinctively ensures that Battle Hag sits loose in her sheath. Then, while she leers lustily at the loping lissome leggage, her teeth bare white as she waits like a wolf in shadow.

Tiv acknowledges the message, makes his excuses and asks Áshildr to attend to fetch Umimmir and Soraia.

Ummiimir and Soraia, in that order, shake Tiv’s hand.

Ummiimir takes the lead from then on, Soraia following.

She is a short woman (little over 5’), an olive-skinned, green-eyed, strawberry-blonde, wearing an unmarked silvery-grey ship’s jumpsuit, comms headset with a discrete HUD and carrying a small hand-computer.

Ummiimir is taller, at 5’8”, brown skinned, with short brown hair. He is a little plump, dressed in a tailored business suit and is empty-handed

Neither appear to be armed.

Noticing Áshildr Soraia nods, and Ummiimir smiles at her: Ah! He pauses, and his smile widens as he tilts his head quizzically: I am sure you are a familiar face, but I cannot put a name to it…

Áshildr gives a tight, but amused smile in return: Áshildr, Ummiimir. Soraia, good to see you looking well after chauffeuring this character around.

Ummiimir relaxes his smile and replies in a familiar manner: Áshildr, of course. But, without either Hallstein or Vigdis in system, that was the confounding factor. Ah, but that is the Cunning Serpent, and that is an older Ásgeirr than either of them, is it not? So, you are in context after all.

Turning to Tiv: Well, Tivali Thingvallir, the company you keep counts to your credit. What do you have to show us?
