Bonnie
She seems and looks exasperated. "Oh for the love of...I'm not disparaging your God. Forgive me, but I've never heard of a spell that allows perfect translation between parties. Possibly the mon..phanatons have a robust vocabulary that somehow has words for concepts and items they have never seen, but I doubt it. That's all."
When the screeching starts, she looks up at the sound and stays still. Her shoulders a bit slumped, a defeated look upon her face. For a moment she appears weak and broken, almost welcoming death from above.
Then her jaw sets and she stands upright. "Fine. You want a demonstration? Here." She stays in the middle of the path as others dive for cover around her and draws her bow. "COME AND GET ME!" She yells at the sky.

Back In The Village?
Sunday, 21st of Goodmonth
Mid-Late Afternoon, Hot, Humid, Buggy
With the conversation interrupted by something loud overhead, the company wisely scatters for cover under the larger trees. All of them except Bonnie, that is.
Disparaged and disheartened by the continuous accusations from her companions, she decides to try driving her point home even harder by taking on the aerial threat alone. As she heads out into the trail shouting loudly to attract the things attention, Wes listens closely to the screeching above, sure he has heard something similar recently.
Initially, the screeching seems to fade away in the distance, but once Bonnie starts screaming, the beast must circle around for another pass, as the noise increases in volume once again. Looking up through the gaps in the foliage, a large, dark shadow suddenly passes directly overhead. Squinting to make out any details, the sheltered members of the party finally spot the source of the commotion.
The flying beast circles a few more times, but apparently isn't thrilled with the idea of trying to land in such a congested portion of the thick jungle. It passes one last time before flying off to the south, the same direction the party intends to go next, towards the area Chauncey is certain they will find the mysterious obelisk they seek.

Avaala the Grey
"So," says Avaala. "I wonder if that flying lizard and its kin like to roost at the top of a tall Obelisk?" He looks to Wes and then to Chauncey. He asks both of them, "Well, are we going to resolve this? The Phanaton situation does seem to be forcing us to a decision. And once we are under the canopy again, we may need their good graces once more. I've made my choice known, but I am neither leading this group, nor the primary spiritual leader of it. What is it to be?"

Bonnie
Breathing hard and with a fierce look in her eyes, she stares down the flying beast. It's not the first time and it may not be the last. As the immediate threat flys away, she turns to face the threat from within.
"Very little has changed from my view. The only information that is different from when we first set out is the confirmation that the phanatons want my blood." She looks at Avaala. "You speak of my betrayal, but even though I have done nothing to you, you are willing and in a hurry to make the first cut."
She shakes her head and sighs. "Fine. It appears that we will not be friends. A pity. I still intend to continue the investigation of the obelisk, but I'd like to buy you a drink at the treehouse when I get back. Perhaps we can get this behind us."
Bonnie turns to Wes. "Wes. I'm grateful to you for saving my life in the temple. Truly. I thought our conversation may have given you explanations for my behavior, but it appears it did not. Perhaps you too will share a drink with me later."
"If anyone else has strong feelings or questions, I'd be more than happy to discuss them in an appropriate place and time. But for the last time out here:
I did not attack the Phanatons. I did not attack the natives. I befriended Snake Eye, Bing, and Gorman out of necessity. I saw Krystal for the first time in the temple. I turned on Gorman at the first reasonable chance, I confided in the townspeople that Bing was spying on them, and was fomenting a plan to steal his ship. The natives and the Phanaton are unable or unwilling to understand espionage, but both the Dragon and Chauncey have searched my soul and found it clear. I can only give you the truth."
"Now. You say we have a day to give the Phanatons an answer. I'm more than willing to talk to them myself, or implement any other ideas that are acceptable to you. Until then, let's go find an obelisk. If you're lucky, maybe I'll get carried away by that beast." She smiles and motions for Luther to take the lead in blazing a trail.

Avaala the Grey
"No, I don't think so," Avaala answers. He starts holding up one finger at a time. "You admit to working for Gorman. You admit to working for Bing. I don't even know who Snake-Eye is, but let's just call him number three. And you didn't even say 'worked for', you said 'befriended'. Drakkar had his own accusations until you convinced him otherwise. Wes has his own version of the story you tell. And now the Phanaton." He stares at the five fingers upright on his hand. "Not enough fingers on one hand..."
"You say you have done nothing to me. If Wes had a scorpion in his hand and it stung him, and then he threw it to Drakkar and the scorpion stung him, and then Drakkar offered it to me, I would say no. And the scorpion would say, 'But I haven't stung you.' and I would answer, 'And I'm not going to let you sting me.' See where this goes?"
"I only drink with friends," he finishes as he waits for Chauncey's reply to his earlier question.

Wes
Wes shakes his head too. "When you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas,as the saying goes".
"You want us to trust you when there is a constantly growing pile of evidence that we shouldn't. And precious little that we should."
"Most of us here have risked our lives at some point to try and build a relationship with the phanaton. And now we're expected to trade away all that goodwill to shelter you from the consequences of your actions."
Wes looks around at the others. "If we don't settle this with the phanaton as soon as we can, we're going to have problems. Ignoring it until after the obilisk will tie us all to Bonnie as far as they are concerned."
He looks back to Bonnie. "If you want to try and make peace with them, my offer stands."

Bonnie
She looks at her inquisitors and sighs. "You two are exhausting. You remind me of an old friend, a cleric of Pholtus. Law and goodness above all, with no leanings towards chaos or neutrality."
If you don't mind too badly, let's take a break from the arguing. I get too deeply involved in the characters at times, and it's hitting too close to home recently. I'm sure there will be other chances to fight with Bonnie.
"If speaking to the Phanaton would help, I would be glad to. Show me how."

Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Looking around the area, Wes doesn't see any signs of the phanaton watching them at the moment.
During all the finger pointing and accusations, the druid looks to the sky and realizes that they only have a few more hours of daylight left to find this obelisk they seek. Then he remembers just how impossible it was for him to sleep out in the wild without any type of temporary structure to rest in.
Luther predicts they still have about an hour or so slog to get to the site they are heading towards.
With a stalemate in the discussion, and Bonnie's 2 major opponents seemingly outnumbered, Chauncey understands that he will now need to make a difficult executive descision to deal with the elephant in the jungle, or play peacemaker and try to press on to their destination before darkness sets in.

Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
"Wesley, Avaala," says Chauncey, slightly exasperated that his previous pronouncement was not taken as the final say in the matter. "Bonnie's explanation is the truth. I know this, because, with the aid of magic, I have seen into her mind."
"Furthermore, Wesley, I do not in the least propose that we 'fight' the Phanoton. Logic dictates that we cannot succeed. I meant only that, assuming they have some sort of honor amongst them, that informing them that an attack on Bonnie is an attack on the party would have the effect of a deterring such an attack. Perhaps I was not entirely clear. Though this seems unlikely, given my natural gift for succinct communication.
Now! It seems we cannot proceed until this matter is dealt with. A failure to do so means the failure, for all intents and purposes, of the mission itself. Therefore, let us seek out the Phanoton and allow Bonnie to converse with them as you have suggested. I'm sure this will all clear itself right up and we can get on with our important business."
He stands with hands on hips, tapping one foot, looking like a buffoon in his mismatched attire. "So... where are they?" he says, finally.

The ranger holds his peace during the exchange, having already said his bit and made his position clear. He waits slightly to one side, eyes roving restlessly, eager to move.

Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Luther Very odd- I posted yesterday, but it seems to have vanished.
Luther shrugs, waiting for this particular dust-up to settle down. Look, people! I may be wrong, but I think I can speak for how the Treefolk are going to think- they're simple, straighforward people. If they see us still walking around with Bonnie, they're going to decide we're on her side- and they're going to attack. Chauncey, your magic may say she's being honest, but I'd rather trust stuff I can see and hear for myself.
He stops short and grins. Unless we can fake 'em out. I know a few knots that look secure but pretty much drop off if you pull at them. Here's my idea...
His plan is pretty straightforward. Bonnie gets her hands tied in front, with a knot that will be easy to slip. If the Phanaton decide to accuse us of siding with her, the group can show her as being secured "Until we can get her back to the village for a human trial". If they attack, Bonnie will be able to free herself in seconds, so she won't be defenseless.

Wes
"There are no phanaton around us right now", says Wes. "Either they are staying away from us until we are ready to answer them. Or they ran away when that bird-lizard flew over. Hopefully they come back so we can get this cleared up. I'd like to avoid any conflict and put this all to bed myself".
"It's not a matter of logic," he tells Chauncey. "The Phanaton are not a single, united tribe. There factions and political divisions amongst them. Telling them that an attack on Bonnie is an attack on all of us might make things worse. It would look like they can't trust any humans, or elves or dwarves. It would unify them against us".
Another thought occurs to Wes. "The other reason there might not be any of them around is because we're close to the Indijun village. Grimm tells me that the Indijun's hunt the phanatons for food. We're more likely to find them back where we just came from". He narrows his eyes, trying to recall when he last saw or heard a sign of the phanaton following them.

Avaala the Grey
"I'm sorry, Chauncey," says Avaala, the look on his face verifying that it really hurts him to let his very Adequate friend down. "But I've had all I am going to take. Now even the Phanaton want to kill her? That is bad enough, but I will not make them our enemy. It is this simple: If the rest of you are going to accept her in your company, then Treasure and I will head back to Beachtown alone. If there are others who will not travel with her, then they can count on us as companions. We may even continue this very mission, depending on how the others decide."

Cealwyn Blackthorn
Tiring quickly of the back-and-forth, Cealwyn sighs audibly and sweeps steady blue eyes across the group. "I'm going to find an obelisk before we run out of daylight or become food for another beast. Come along if you like. Or don't."
He settles his gear and strides in the direction previously indicated by their fearless leader. (That was South of our current position, wasn't it? That's the last heading I remember reading earlier in the thread.) If anyone with a more thorough knowledge of the obelisk in question chooses to come along, he'll defer to their direction and adjust course as needed. Otherwise, he'll employ his woods-running skills as best he's able to strike a trail in the general direction of their objective, eyes and ears open.

Bonnie
She raises a brow at Luther's suggestion, wary at the idea of being voluntarily restrained. She appraises Luther, then makes up her mind and smiles. "Interesting compromise, perhaps they can even rough me up a bit first? But I like the way you think. Maybe we call that plan B?"
When Cealwyn moves to blaze his own trail, she follows. "I knew I liked you. Action. We'll need to clear a wider trail than if it was just us. I'll follow your lead." She pulls her sword and starts clearing where Cealwyn suggests.

Once Bonnie gives up on settling things with the phanaton, Wes shrugs. He moves over to Avalaa. "I'm done with her. Looks like it's me and you at least." Then he looks at Treasure. "Oh, yes of course. Us three."

The Search Continues
Sunday, 21st of Goodmonth
Mid-Late Afternoon, Hot, Humid, Buggy
With no phanaton currently around, It seems that Wes is likely correct about them not congregating in an area where they are aggressively hunted by the nearby natives.
And with no end in sight to the party's argument over their controversial elven scout, Chauncey seems to be adequately loosing control over the group he has tasked himself with leading. His claims about being certain of the woman's intentions are not being taken seriously by his friends, causing the mage even more frustrations.
Eventually Bonnie, Cealwyn, and Paul grow tired enough of the stalemate that they simply head off in a southerly direction, blazing themselves a new trail, determined to find what they set out for, alone if they must.
Wes and Avaala seem determined to sever all ties with the thief, despite the fact they they are already several miles away from town.
While Luther, Grimm, and Chauncey need to decide who to follow, the trio still eager to find the obelisk before nightfall slowly disappears into the jungle.

Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Luther
Luther hurries to catch the three going south, muttering curses in a surprising number of languages. He makes sure to cut decent-sized blazes in trees as he heads south.
When he catches up, he tells Bonnie I don't trust you- I'm just trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Guys.....
I really don't like the idea of "pausing" the action here. Especially in a mission that we aren't consistently getting posts every 2 days.
Bonnie has openly agreed to negotiate with them, but I already clearly stated that there are no phanaton around, so why are we dwelling on the idea to settle this by speaking with them if that aint gonna happen?
I dont care if the party splits up due to mistrust. That seems like a fairly normal reaction in this situation, all things considered, but the timing on this perplexes me. We seem to be doing nothing but spinning our wheels on this issue at the moment, and that probably doesn't sit well with the players who aren't involved in the argument.
Please continue posting while I try to iron this out behind the scenes, so we don't fall any further behind.
Thanks!
