Re: Along the Border Watch
Unconcerned with the spoils of assassins, Montego comforts Jasmalus as best he can, grabbing a shovel from the wagon and getting busy digging graves for the fallen merchants.
"This may take some time, folks. Perhaps we should position the wagons in a defensive manner, in case something else unexpected comes along."
As he sets the dead in their shallow graves, the ranger searches through their possessions again, looking for any other clues or paperwork to explain their senseless murders.

Cassius
Cassius lowers his head and blades at Jamalus' words. "I'll help. I'm sorry for your loss."
He gets to work digging individual graves while trying to keep an eye out for trouble.

Looks at the carnage before them but quirks an eyebrow. He leans in closely to Cassius whispering a question: Did he say... burry them?

Muldgarr presses the orc for more information... Who wants these “documents” and once found, where are they supposed to be brought? Remember, your answer will determine if you see the light of another day!!!

Cassius
He nods at the large Centaur. "Yes. Bury." He pauses and continues. "I'm not sure what you do with your dead, but sometimes humans dig holes and put the body into it, covering it with the dirt. Like a dog would bury a bone." He raises his brow. "Um. With all respect."
Cassius continues digging.

Nods. Hmm... strange... but, then I suppose we seem odd to them as well. He looks at the digging and feels a little helpless.
I am sorry. My people are not known for their digging skills. I will help with the rites if I may.

Re: Along the Border Watch
The Orc squeals and squirms. "Me told you all me know! Swear to Gruumsh! Swear to Grummsh! Me know nothing else!"
Suddenly, the Orc kicks out at Muldgarr...striking him in the thigh...but doing no damage.
Orc attack: [1d20] = 10
The Orc attempts to grab Muldgarr's sword arm...

Montego keeps digging, trying to strain his ears to hear the conversation with the orc.
"Muldgarr, I think you should let Jamalus make that determination. Maybe he would like to exact a bit of revenge upon....."
He stops digging when he sees the pitiful things treachery, ready to rush over and decapitate the dumb brute with his shovel.

Re: Along the Border Watch
Northern Furyondy, the citadel of Greatwall, 585 CY, the month of Patchwall, Sunday 9, late morning...Back to the Mud
Malin grabs a shovel, patting Jasmalus on the back, but says nothing as he starts digging alongside the merchant. The teamsters join in and with Montego and Cassius helping, the graves are dug fairly quickly; it helps that the ground is soft from the abundance of rain the area has had.

Once the bodies are wrapped and laid in the graves, Jasmalus stands over his brother, his jaw clenched as he struggles in his grief. He clears his throat and looks at Andelphocles...
Disgusted and frustrated, Sai steps away from the wagons and performs his own "rites" by giving back to nature, planting seeds and hoping for many years of growth without the interference of humans, Orcs, and other creatures seemingly bent on destruction.
You may live for seed to grow enough for nesting.
Talon's voice is in his head and Sai can "feel" the wind ruffle the feathers of his companion; can hear the owl's heartbeat; can almost see through his sharp eyes.
Orc is lively...

Andelphocles
The prince stands erect and looks to the sky with his arms spread out like he would take hold of the horizons themselves in an embrace.
Spirits of the high skies that guide us to stretch and grow;
gentle lord of the sun, distant stars, ancestral light;
cloud folk who paint such art above us;
breath of life, soft breeze and chasing winds;
feathered folk who know the dance of freedom upon the wing.
Spirits of the dark earth that holds and feeds us;
mud of our lands, rich and fertile soil into which we so deeply root;
rocks and stones, gems of the earth, you who give us stability underfoot;
trees and plants, creatures four footed and two.
Spirits of the open seas that wash and shape the shores of these lands;
meandering rivers, guiding our direction, birthing springs of new life, deep still pools holding us upon our journey; you of the tidal waters, emerging and receding, blood and rain, swimming, diving.
Spirits of this place, power of nature, who you offer us the breath of life, the fire of passion, the sweet taste of love, the ground upon which we walk, know that you are honored here. Let us feel your presence, let us share the awe.
With that he brings his hands together in a thunderous clap and bows his head for but a moment before looking up and standing more casually again. He puts a large hand on Jasmalus. We will see him again in the summer fields.

Muldgarr grips the orc and smirks...Then, there is nothing more than I need from you!! He abruptly slides his blade through the orc’s neck.

Montego smirks at the antics of the fighter, knowing full well he never intended to allow the stinking orc to live.
The ranger then looks to the leaders of the caravan.
"What shall we do now? Continue on to our next stop? Or something else?"
Keeping a sharp eye and ear out for any more trouble, he will be glad to get these wagons to their final destination sooner than later.

Re: Along the Border Watch
Northern Furyondy, the citadel of Greatwall, 585 CY, the month of Patchwall, Sunday 9, Noon...Moving On
Graves dug, prayers said, Orcs slain...the heroes of the Border Watch get rolling again, pulling four wagons this time (right?) and moving onward down the road. Jasmalus was moved to quiet sobs by the words of Andelphocles and because of his epitaph, the merchant has asked the centaur if he would ride alongside his wagon.
The road continues ever on and as the afternoon sun wanes toward evening, a group of five calvarymen meet the caravan on the road about five miles out from Fort Belvor, and escort the caravan in.
As you approach the fort, you see it sits directly across the Veng River from the Horned Society capital of Molag, now under Iuzian control. It is an old fort, with an intact but deteriorating 30' high curtain wall surrounding the main compound. Two towers on the curtain wall side face the Veng River, while a massive gatehouse faces the west.
You pass through an abandoned village outside the stronghold; and when asked, the calvarymen say the people still come here during the day to tend the fields and graze their livestock, but all have left the village for the safety of the fort. Many of the buildings stand burned or battered; damaged by the war, assaulted by raiders, or cannibalized for their resources.
The cavlavrymen escort you toward the massive pair of banded wooden gates, guarded by four halberd-wielding men standing duty outside. With the approach of the wagons, the massive doors swing wide and the caravan enters the fort itself.
Once inside, Malin and Emerell open their wagons and "set up shop" almost immediately, and begin to sell things to the citizenry. Jasmalus leaves his wagon and heads into the fort. The rest of the companions have some time to recover from the road. Looking around the fort, you notice the fort's garrison stands somewhat depleted when compared to the troop presence in Greatwall. Judging by the size of the fort, it should hold more than 250 men, but has only about half of that. You're also unable to miss the signs of flame arrow attacks, and the numerous water buckets strategically positioned in anticipation of the next attack.
As you wander about, the inhabitants of the fort recognize you as outsiders (particularly Andelphocles) and deluge you with questions of the outside world. It becomes clear they have little opportunity to stray far from the safety of the fort, and that, at least for them, the war is still very real.
"What about the village of Copperpin? Have ya heard of any survivors?"
"Have ye seen me cousin, Hansel? He joined up to fight about a year ago and we haven't heard a peep from him since."
"Is the Old One dead? Or can ye even kill a demon?"
"What about the weather? Will our crops be spared this winter?"
Such are the questions (and more) that come your way.
Actions?

Andelphocles
Of course, he rides along side the wagon with the family. He listens to anything they have to say and does not judge. He takes it as an opportunity to learn more about the people and what has changed since so long ago. He will nod along with anything they say, inserting what he should when appropriate to invite them to continue. He mostly just listens.
When they come across the calvary, he finds them curious. He makes sure they know about the attack and ambush they encountered earlier on the road so they know to be on the lookout for similar events since there is apparently someone directing the orcs.
He looks about the fortifications and the soldiers. He tries to be subtle as he can and lean down to his companions. Where do you suppose the rest of this garrison is? Out on patrol? I estimate only half of them must be here... This place, it seems... it seems to be dying a slow death.
For his part, he will ask these same folks the following questions:
What has happened here? It appears you have suffered many attacks.
How can we help you repair this place?
Do you all have enough food for the oncoming winter?
Where are the rest of the troops?
What do you know of the road ahead?
What are the names of these lands and your people?
Who is the leader here among your people?
When did all this happen?

I have not heard of this, please, tell me your news. I will ask if any of my comrades have heard anything about this or if we should perhaps investigate."What about the village of Copperpin? Have ya heard of any survivors?"
He listens to this and smiles, nodding to himself before speaking. Family and new of family is important and he is happy to carry any messages that he might be able to. I see you and hear your words. Tell me, how will I know your cousin's person when I see him so I may pass your words to him?"Have ye seen me cousin, Hansel? He joined up to fight about a year ago and we haven't heard a peep from him since."
Looking more than a little concerned. Who is this old one? A demon you say? Where do these tales come from? Is this recent?"Is the Old One dead? Or can ye even kill a demon?"
He shakes his head. I cannot predict the weather, my friend. The Rainkeeper's ways are mysterious to me. I can only offer the same advice I have heard before. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Tell me, friend, have you put back stores? Do you have means to survive a hard winter?"What about the weather? Will our crops be spared this winter?"

Sai
After arrival Sai dismounts Goliath and ties him to the back of one of the new wagons. Winks at Emerall.
Is there anything you need while I am out wandering? I can grab you anything you need it looks like you will be busy here.
I will try to find you both some hot food.
He walks to the back of one of the new wagons. And gathers the 8 broad swords, 8 Hand axes, and 4 Short bows with crude arrows.
I am off to sell these and see if I can get us a buyer for our wagons. We are looking to sell them right? No need to keep both but what is everyone's thoughts? Keep one of sell them both? I have no need for one other than a little extra gold for the church.
He waits for the general response of everyone.
OK I am off to the smith to dump these weapons. Maybe find a wagon buyer.
As he wonders through the Keep he tries to keep a low profile. Responding as a priest with a Bless You or I shall look into it. Be well. And keep an eye out for any young children that are injured or Old Infirmed that are injured.

You were able to only bring one of the wagons > and I'm assuming Goliath pulled one...correct? If not, you were able to bring the weapons and such but no wagon; sorry if that was unclear earlier.

OOC- OK. Will lead Goliath to the weaponsmith or trader to sell the weapons and then to any area where there are wagons and horses for sale. Will try to sell the one wagon and weapons.

how far is the other wagon time wise from the fort? Would it be worth our time to go back and fetch it? Adel would be willing to accompany Sai if he mentioned it.

Northern Furyondy, the citadel of Greatwall, 585 CY, the month of Patchwall, Sunday 9, Evening @ Fort Belvor: Questions & Answers
Andelphocles
"Copperpin be me home," says a toothless older man. His hands and face are weathered from the sun and hard work. "Not many of us left, I'm afraid. Word is them bloody damned Orcs put it to the torch a fortnight ago!"
"Can't miss him! He has green eyes and a mop of curly yeller hair. Good looking, he is, too!"
This comes from a woman who has similar hair and eyes; she pats Adelphocles like she would her farm horse.
The speaker, a short fellow with greasy black hair and a large boil on the side of his neck, and smells like he is about two weeks past due a bath. He gives the centaur an incredulous look and frowns. "Iuz...the Old One...erryone knows he is demon born. T'wouldn't be surprised if one of his chil'run are responsible for the attacks."
"Nah, none of us were able to do that. Our crops and orchards have gone untended for many weeks now. We are at the mercy of Beory and the Old Gods this season. Besides, I thought you...you know...your kind were attuned to the weather and such...no?"
Adelphocles has questions of his own:
What has happened here? It appears you have suffered many attacks.
How can we help you repair this place?
Do you all have enough food for the oncoming winter?
Where are the rest of the troops?
What do you know of the road ahead?
What are the names of these lands and your people?
Who is the leader here among your people?
When did all this happen?
Some of the folks wander off, returning to their duties or to their makeshift beds inside the fort. The man with the boil on his neck grimaces again as he scratches at it, and says, "You best ask Mikinus them questions. He is the captain of the guard and a decent feller, I reckon, if decent fellers still exist in this hellhole. But, we've been here almost two months now, and folks trickle in erry other day or so, most half-starved or half-dead...or both! Mikinus heals 'em and feeds 'em and puts a bow or sword in their hand. He'll be along in a few, I suspect."
Sai

One of the teamsters, a thin fellow with a scraggly beard, answers: "Ya, if ya find a fellow who can get me horses some new shoes, that'd be fine." The fellow climbs down off the wagon and begins checking the large draft horses pulling his wagon...which is also Emerall's wagon.
The Elf merchant smiles at Sai. "I am beginning to...smell like horse and sweat...and could use a bath if there is such in a fort." She shrugs and after a few seconds Sai shakes himself back from his daydreams...as do most of the other men in the group.

Wonders of mumbling about a private bath and some splashing about. He then heads to the blacksmith looking to sell his wares or trade them for some horse shoeing and rations. He moves through the crowd looking for the smith and finally asks someone how to get there.
Hey Fella, Where do I find the Blacksmith or a Trader located at? I have a few weapons to sell him. Once I find my way to them.
To the Blacksmith, I have 8 Broad swords, 8 hand axes and 4 short bows to sell you. I have a horse that needs new shoes and the rest I'll take in gold or silver. All are crude but the Broad swords are pretty nice. Lot of metal content. I would like to have access to your forge for an hour or so later too. After sun set. Got a Sweet Young Lady that needs a warm bath. Will quench some metal in the barrel water to warm it up for her.
And I would look at your polearms. I am in need of one with a long reach, maybe a Ranseur if you have one.
To the Trader, I have a wagon that was picked up on the road. It is good shape so I am thinking 100 gold crowns since a new one goes for 150. I'll take half in food and provisions the other half will be in gold coins. We will need Dry rations for 12 people for a week, 8 loaves of bread, 2 wheels of cheese and the use of a large water barrel for a few hours and I will return it, a large canvas tarp which I will keep, and a bar of lavender lye soap if you have it that I will keep.
