Arkham Police Station
Arkham, Massachusetts
8:00 am, Friday, Oct. 8, 1925

Agent Cooper and Dr. David Clarke discuss his case.

"Yes, Agent Mulder briefed me on Ms. Waite's role in the investigation as a person of interest, though frankly her involvement looks peripheral," says Agent Cooper, eating a donut. "We in the law need evidence. These are good donuts."

"We appreciate your enthusiasm, but entering a private residence typically requires a search warrant. Agent Mulder thinks the BOI can help with the murder case against you - the autopsy will hopefully shed light on that, and time of death. But there is still the matter of breaking-and-entering, a charge that looks clear-cut."

"As to her alleged ability to manipulate people's minds, that's a claim that is hard to prove. Perhaps she is a mesmerist who can hypnotize. But again, she was a proven victim of rape by a BOI officer, with witnesses, and that case cannot be denied."

"The third-floor window is a difficult exit for anyone, given the lack of a ledge, the considerable drop, and the presence of a witness, your colleague Mr. Frank Morgan. He said during questioning that he saw no one exit the window up to the point which he entered the building. Which was after the death of Ms. Waite."

"If her diary entries are a ploy, that would mean she was planning her own death for 2-3 weeks? I doubt a jury would believe that. The police questioned her roommate Jenny, who said that Ms. Waite confided in her about your harassment a few weeks ago. Another damning piece of evidence in a jury's eyes. Jenny urged Asenaith to report you to the school authorities; she apparently didn't, which is a point in your favor."

"Now as to cultists or Sam Archer murdering her, that's a lot of ifs. If she was viewed as a weak link or threat, perhaps the cult would want to silence her. If Sam Archer surfaced, maybe. Our search for him has yet to turn up anything, though we now know he is or was somewhere in Maryland."

"However, let's hope that all of this may be moot. With Ms. Waite no longer with us, it remains with the State or surviving family to press charges. It appears her parents are deceased; other relatives have yet to be found. If the State pursues this, the BOI is likely to have more influence."

After the conversation, Agent Cooper escorts Dr. Clarke out of the police station to his home. Dr. Clarke is required to appear at a court hearing in two weeks, and as part of the bail is not suppose to leave the state of Massachusetts.

On the way out, they bump into Dr. Frank Morgan.

Walking Through Providence,
Reginald Wilkins apartment,
Nighttime, Oct. 7, 1925

Reginald Wilkins and Marius Albertoni tensely leave McSweeney's Catch. In hushed whispers they discuss their next move and agree to return to Reginald's apartment. The bookseller wonders if his shop has been vandalized in their absence. He points out that they can find this "Dark Lady" tomorrow with BOI agent back-up.

The investigators keep an eye open on their long walk back through the rain. The streets are misty. Is that someone following them? No, just a vagrant. At the edge of the waterfront district, Marius is spooked by a hand that emerges from an alley. He is relieved that it belongs to an inquiring prostitute, whom he declines. Later, not far from Reginald's apartment, there are footsteps approaching from a shadowy street off to the right. Emerging, a police officer making the rounds, asks if they are okay. Reginald feels paranoid.

They reach Reginald's bookshop and the apartment above. All seems in order. The two men look forward to updating Agent Mulder tomorrow. With a last glance at his bookshelves, Reginald turns in to bed. Marius has a bracer of whiskey and then hits the sack.

Reginald's unconscious mind turns over the occult knowledge he has absorbed in these last two months. He slips into dream...

Symmetry becomes it.
Come to ruin our impending feast,
a presence that nourishes suffering.
All things below voice his burning name.
His turmoil offers only truth in which longer moments live.
Let consciousness recapture the flicker it saw then.
Torch our continuity of thought
now until that mind evaporates.
Lust after shadows in us,
rend that lace of promises broken and white lies,
regard our love of wreckage,
the way our heads thunder approaching that warning pulse
and temple of throbbing light that is ....

... is that light throbbing of temple and pulse
warning that approaching thunder heads our way.
the wreckage of love,
our regard lies white and broken,
promises of lace that rend us
in shadow, after lust evaporates.
Mind that until now thought of continuity,
our torch, then saw it flicker.
The recapture, consciousness let live moments longer,
which, in truth, only offers turmoil.
His name burning, his voice below things.
All suffering nourishes that presence.
A feast impending. Our ruin to come.
It becomes symmetry.

Marius Albertoni

Marius tries his level best to get some sleep. Being shadowed today shook his nerves today, and laying into the cultist felt a little too cathartic. He's a moral man, but not a kind one, and he's starting to see why the Blackshirts of his ancestral homeland rely on violence to clean up the streets. Memories of Sam Archer's unexpected flash of majestic violence against Chertovski have been playing in his mind over and over like a looped reel. With each passing moments his subconscious begins to form an idealized image of the vigilante as a saint and martyr in this new twisted religion that threatens to take hold of his devotion, that pits hopeless human action against cold, cosmic apathy.

In the morning he doesn't bother to shave and has nothing but coffee to break his fast. "Let's go see Mulder and get this Dark Lady lead moving—Mamma mia Reggie, you look terrible. Rough night? Here, have some coffee—I took the liberty of doubling the grounds, it should wake you right up. It's the only way I can get the coffee around here to taste like the Italian stuff, good and strong."

"Frank, its good to see you. Is Edith O.K.? Blasted curse that has befallen me. I can't leave the state for two weeks. I guess our trip to New Orleans will have to wait. I just hope the trail doesn't go cold."

Reginald Wilkins, bookdealer
Reginald awakens.

Thanks, he tells Marius, taking the coffee.

Reginald grabs both of his tomes, putting them into his bag. He makes a few phone calls. He and Marius call the BOI to set up a raid on the Dark Lady for later today if possible. Reginald also calls his psychiatrist, hoping to set up another session of therapy within the next few days. He also calls the other investigators, to update the group and plan their next move.

The coffee thankfully takes him.

It awakens Reginald.

Sorry for the delay in posting.

Today's post is an introduction of sorts to a new player whose been waiting for the long night to pass. Prof. Balandabar is Reginald Wilkin's friend, an ancient language specialist recently arrived at Arkham University from abroad. You may recall that Reginald called Balandabar for help in translating the Xaqloui language in the books, as that seemed critical to a fuller understanding of the content. Reginald had made plans (among his many activities) to take the train up to Arkham the next day (today, Friday, Oct. 8) with Marius.

Tomorrow (real life, not game time), I'll put up the next post picking up with the rest of the party.
Six Years Earlier...

Concerning Prof. Baba Balandabar
London, U.K.
February, 1919

During all of this his British uncle dies, a golf course stroke at St. Andrews, just short of turning 65. The pulmonary guns fire everything they’ve got into a popping strobe-lit heaven, emptying the chambers. A second dad to him, after his own died in the avalanche, and opened his Shooters Hill London home to him.

This sends him down desperate straits. He’s bought an exorcism sword on the first day of the new month, 108 Chinese coins, the perfect geomantic number, square holes at their centers, bound together by red hair into the flat shape of a ritual blade for banishing. A King of Swords, the Hebrew letter that’s attributed to his tarot trump being Zain, a sword, his passion for sinology awakened by Wang Yu’s The Sword, and now this.

Clearly asking for it, he decides to use his new toy and a first time improvised attempt at magic, winging it, asking for guidance and, if it’s not too much trouble, a confirming dream. At 4:00 am the next morning he wakes up to darkness and a male voice whispering a single word into his ear: Endymion.

At first it’s gibberish, another false start like all that matchmaking palmistry, then he remembers where he’s come across the word before, a book he’d not especially enjoyed. Erotic World of Faerie. It’s a poem by John Keats based on a Greek myth, its last 50 lines written at Box Hill, one of the Heights visible from his own Shooters Hill toward the south. It seems that Endymion is a shepherd boy who falls in love with the divine Selene, goddess of the moon and Moon itself. Reciprocating his affections, she explains that since she is the queen of night and dreams, there are no means by which he might be with her always other than the death-in-life of eternal sleep.

Then the coincidences start, the library angels hurling some required book from the shelves down to the tiled floor at his feet. His life, his human narrative begins to trespass on the draughty borderlines of the fantastic as defined by Tzvetan Todorov, a literature of hesitation that refuses to decide between a rational or supernatural resolution. Dreams and signs provoke him to investigate the source material, the unembellished myth, and he accumulates a massive library of classics that will necessitate surrendering another bedroom wall to academic kudzu. He tracks down the legend’s pedigree to Mount Latmos in Turkey, the discovery of caves believed to be the hermit shelters of dream-oracles, luftmensch, their lives spent in the presence of their lunar goddess, on the nod, perhaps dosed up on extracts of her secret, visionary flower. Was this Endymion, his origin, or maybe an Endymion cult? Shooters Hill, Box Hill, Latmos, something about hills here, hills and caves. There among his research in his anchorite retreat upon the summit he fills another pipe and considers, gradually identifies, as out beyond his window the decade winds down towards discontented winter.

Prof. Baba Balandabar is sipping coffee in the professors lounge when he overhears shocking gossip.

“I couldn’t believe it. Yes, indeed. Caught breaking into the student’s room. Arrested for murder!”

“Balderdash! Poppycock!”

“Well you know he was put on ‘sabbatical’ after that disastrous expedition to Turkey. Unhinged now, some say. They’re sure to give the chap the heave-ho now.”

Prof. Balandabar wonders who they may be talking about. As a professor new to Miskatonic University, the Indian expert in ancient languages doesn’t know many of his fellow professors. The mention of Turkey piques his interest...

Arkham Police Station
Arkham, Massachusetts
8:05 am, Friday, Oct. 8, 1925

Dr. David Clarke runs into Dr. Frank Morgan on the way out of the police station. His fellow Miskatonic University professor is a sight for sore eyes after the terrible night in the prison.

Dr. Morgan notices a distinct body odor about his friend, whose eyes are blood shot with heavy bags under them, his 24-hour beard shot through with white, clothes are rumpled. It appears incarceration does not agree with Dr. Clarke.

The two men talk of what has happened as they taxi back to Dr. Morgan's house. Dr. Clarke is further disturbed by Edith's behavior with Frank at her apartment. At home, Dr. Clarke showers and eats a hearty breakfast. He and Frank plan their next steps.

The phone rings. It is Reginald Wilkins and Marius Albertoni in Providence.

Reginald Wilkins' Apartment
Above The Charter Bookstore
Providence, RI
9:00 am, Friday, Oct. 8, 1925

Reginald and Marius awaken that morning in a better mood. Perhaps it is the light of day, or the definite plans of action they have before them. Marius' strong coffee is welcome. Reginald shakes off the dream of last night, not sure what its significance may be.

The antiquarian bookseller places a call to the New York office of the Bureau of Investigation for Agent Mulder. He listens patiently as Reginald describes the previous night's excursion. They share their suspicions about Mt. Latmos and their hypothesis to see what help they can bring to what may be an international cult.

"Good work Wilkins, but dangerous for a civilian like yourself," says Agent Mulder. "I agree that this Dwayne gave up the address very easily, so we'll have to be on guard. I'll gather up some local agents to check on the Dark Lady. Time is of the essence. I'll let you know when the raid will happen, if you want to join."

"One open item of investigation has been closed - the location of Claire Ford. I can give you that. She is the social worker who took care of Raymond Randolph in his last days of unnaturally old age. Coincidentally the same girl Dr.s Clarke and Morgan retrieved from Paris at the behest of his father and expedition financial backer James Ford, himself mentioned in Carcosa's letters as involved in certain real estate transactions."

"Wilkins, I've been meaning to ask you. Your translations of the Egyptian parchment incriminating Konstantin Chertovski was completely wrong. It didn’t contain any evidence against the Russian. The point is moot with the man dead, but I have to wonder about your translation skills. Was that intentional? That claim could have been the nail in the coffin for Chertovski, because that's when Archer shot him."

Agent Mulder listens to Reginald's response.

"Well, I have some bad news regarding your fellow investigator Dr. David Clarke. He was arrested last night on the charge of murdering Mrs. Asenaith Waite, a Miskatonic University student. You recall she was a cousin of the now deceased Konstantin Chertovski, who was killed by Sam Archer in New York. Clarke denies it, but I'm worried about him. Has he cracked like Archer? Watch him for me, will you Wilkins?"

Reginald is shocked by the news. Another murder? He experiences a flashback to last night's palindromic dream - 'Symmetry becomes it. / Come to ruin our impending feast, / a presence that nourishes suffering.'

Marius is surprised to hear of the turn of violence from Dr. Clarke. The hunter ponders his dark thoughts from last night - 'his subconscious begins to form an idealized image of the vigilante as a saint and martyr in this new twisted religion that threatens to take hold of his devotion'. Has Dr. Clarke, like Sam Archer, succumbed to this allure?

Reginald next secures an appointment with his psychiatrist for the following week, the earliest available. "Remember your daily affirmations," comments the Doctor.

Reginald places a third call to his friend Professor Baba Balandabar at Miskatonic University, with whom he spoke yesterday regarding translations of the Xaqloui passages in the occult tomes. Reginald and Marius were intending on taking a train today to Arkham to meet with Prof. Balandabar. The developments with alleged murderer Dr. Clarke now add more urgency to their visit to Arkham.

Together Reginald and Marius then phone Dr. Clarke to get his version of the death of Asenaith Waite, and share their own developments.

Marius

On the telephone to Dr. Clarke, Marius interrogates him with intensity. "Clarke! They say you're being strung up for murder! What the hell happened up there? Was Mrs. Waite in on Chertovski's racket all along?—No, don't answer in too much detail over the telephone, the operator could be patching anyone in. We're coming up to Arkham right away, we'll come see you as soon as we can. Anyway, here's Reg." Marius passes the phone to his partner and goes through the rest of his roll ups while he thinks.

"What's happening Frank? Is it me? Have I finally cracked? Did I do the things I've been accused of? I don't remember doing them. You have to believe me, Frank. Your all I have left! I just understand what's happening anymore."

Phone rings and Dr. Clark picks it up.
"Hello? Mr. Albertoni its... Um, yes... Well I... Um... oh... yes of course. Hello, Mr. Wilkins."

In the professors' lounge, Dr. Baladabar sits close enough to the telephone to be the first to reach it if it rings but far enough away so that he does not appear anxious for the phone to ring. While his left left is cradling a book in Xaqloui and his eyes are reviewing it, Baba's ears are listening intently to some of the conversation across the room. The lamp over his head makes his beard cast strange shadows as he strokes it.

"Hmmm, Turkey ...

Waiting for Reginald to arrive at Miskatonic Univ or call, the professor of ancient languages wonders what sort of book he old friend has found.

Is this about something that happened to Dr. Balandabar?

Frank attempts to console his perturbed friend, offering him a smoke, ”I believe you, David, and I don’t believe you’ve snapped. There is certainly something foul afoot.” Frank’s hand goes to his chin in thought. ”Perhaps this situation is similar to my own with the doppelgänger? You remember don’t you, David? The safe at the hotel and the incident at the library?”

The sudden ringing of the phone causes Frank to jump.

Reginald gives an exasperated sigh. It is difficult to explain to a layman, but I'll try. First you must understand that the language of ancient Egypt evolved over time, as all languages do. Over the thousands of years of the Egyptian kingdoms existence, many linguistic changes took place. Furthermore, the earlier forms of the language employed what linguists call a "zero-grade subject-object" verbal system. This basically means that it can be difficult to accurately determine basic linguistic relationships such as indirect or direct objects without proper context, especially in verbal phrases containing future tense or subjunctive mood.

Put simply, Agent Mulder, any given Egyptian text, especially earlier texts, require both context and interpretation by the translator. At the time of my initial reading, I had to make a judgment call about the texts contents. It may be that an other translator, with sufficient time and resources, can propose a more accurate translation. But that doesn't mean that mine was wrong.

Reginald gets a dread feeling in his stomach. Has Clarke been set up, or driven mad? Or worse...?I certainly will.

Reginald and Marius head out to the train station. Reginald brings both of his tomes with him.

Persuade roll on Mulder re Egyptian linguistics, if needed:
Persuade (41) [1d100] = 29

Dr. Clarke, I understand that you have been accused of the murder of Ms. Waite. You no doubt will recall that she was also attacked, also unprovoked, by another who claimed no knowledge of the act, during our investigation of Chertovski.

Who was the first person to see you with Ms. Waite? Where is that person now?

Frank, where is Edith now? Did she act ... unusually recently? It is vitally important that you do not discuss our investigation with her. But do not let her know you are doing so. If she inquires, you must feed her false information. Do you understand? Our lives may depend upon it!

Agent Mulder listens to Reginald Wilkins’ deft double-talk. There is a pregnant pause.

“I’m not sure I follow you,” answers Agent Mulder. “But you’re the expert, or so I hope. We’ll have to be more careful in the future about voicing ideas or allegations in public, so mistakes don’t cause repercussions. We at the BOI need to have evidence, and unresolved questions such as translations or items requiring research will need careful vetting.”

"Where is Ms. Ford now?" asks Reginald.

“Claire Ford lives at 3 Locke St. in Andover, Massachusetts, with a teacher from nearby Phillips Academy," answers Agent Mulder. "She is employed by Caring Angels, a social services agency in Lawrence that provides care and companionship for the elderly.”

Reginald and Marius board the 11:00 am train for Boston, where they transfer to another train for the trip to Arkham. The bookseller and hunter find a pair of seats and settle in.

The train rattles out of Providence, through the suburbs and into the countryside. The late Autumn trees, branches bereft of leaves, are spindly fingers and claws reaching for the cloudy sky.

Marius lights a cigarette and wonders if he should use the time to continue reading the dark but compelling occult tomes in Marius’ travel bag. During the trip the two investigators wonder how the raid on the supposed Dark Lady will go tonight. They have their doubts about the veracity of Dwayne’s information.

Hopefully Agent Mulder will be able to extricate Dr. Clarke from the murder charge. With their trip to New Orleans looming, it would not be good for their fellow investigator to be in jail.

The train arrives in Arkham. Reginald and Marius take a taxi to Arkham to the address of Prof. Baba Balandabar, a block from the campus of Miskatonic University. Reginald agrees to visit his friend, while Marius will go post haste to Dr. David Clark.

The maid answers the door and says that Prof. Balandabar is at the faculty club. Reginald gets directions and walks to the old building in the middle of the school campus.

Reginald waits in the parlor for Prof. Balandabar. He clutches the books and notes in Xaqloui, hoping his old friend can confirm and uncover new revelations. The Prof. arrives in a few minutes and the two men are face-to-face again after several years...

Meanwhile and elsewhere, Marius knocks on the door to Dr. Clarke's home. The door is opened by Dr. Frank Morgan...

Reginald tries not to let sarcasm creep into his conversation with Agent Mulder. I'll be more careful when translating Egyptian texts in public. Speaking of which, where is the one seized from Chertovski's house? I'd like to review it again when we return from Arkham.

Reginald writes down Ms. Ford 's address and reminds Marius that they should visit her before leaving Massachusetts.

Reginald smiles upon seeing his old friend. Baba, how are you? You look well. I must show you something. When they are alone in Baba's study, Reginald shows him the tomes and the xaqloui writing. Have you ever seen anything like this? What can you make of it? Reg tries not to let the desperation show in his voice.
How do we know you're not a donkey-brained man?
