Let me just throw out that Lars is only down to -1. One complete day of rest should bring him 1d2 hit points and if he recovered, we could carry much more without having to drag another body around.

It's so hard to resist participating in these conversations. I want you to always assume there will be treasure, but to often fear there won't be. It's a hard balance.

Do we have any light we could lower down the shaft again? And where did those other spiders come from?
Maybe we could lower Orrin down to look around now that the spiders seem to be gone?

You have no idea where the spiders came from. Only Lars was awake when they arrived and he refuses to share that information at present for some reason.

I suppose given the late hour and bad weather we are compelled to stay here at least until morning. After that it depends on things like Lars' condition, weather, etc.

The party finishes out the night in the shelter of the cave entrance, surrounded by the massive reeking corpses of their slain arachnid foes. The rains continue on at full strength past dawn, when the party stirs and prepares itself for the next day.
Please deduct one day's rations each. Lars is now as safe to travel with as he will get. Spells can be re-memorized.

Orrin looks pleased that Lars is doing somewhat better. He nudges a spider corpse with the toe of his boot.
"Let's go down the hole and see what the brutes were guarding. Maybe the rain will have stopped by the time we're done."

Lug looks around the tunnel walls and ceiling for secret doors. Assuming he sees none, he'll tie a rope around Orrin and lower him down the hole to see what's there.
