After ordering his loyal right-hand dwarf to toss the torch on the oil-splashed snakes; Xale pulls his war hammer out and commences to swing it at a pair of snakes in an attempt to smash them....

OOC: 2 attacks a round with a +2 Warhammer that he has double specialization in and STR 17: +6 to attacks/+7 to damage

Attack 1: [1d20+6] = 2+6 = 8

ARGH! Why does this die-roller hate me so! On the slight chance that's a hit; here's damage: [1d4+7] = 2+7 = 9

Attack 2: [1d20+6] = 6+6 = 12

Damage: [1d4+7] = 4+7 = 11

Fosco attacks with his short sword

[1d20+2] = 11+2 = 13

[1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6

The asps take initiative (Initiative: [1d6] = 6) and immediately spread out to attack.

Malibran, who had opened the chest (albeit with his staff), attracts three of the snakes. One bites him in the arm, another on the leg. Xale, Zoster, Halbrad, and Fosco are also bitten.

[Malibran: -2 hp. Xale, Zoster, Halbrad, and Fosco: -1 hp each. Everyone who was bitten, please roll saves vs. poison at -2. Malibran needs to roll two saving throws.]

Two asps strike at Elsa. But she is able to deflect their attacks with her shield. Worren, too, is able to avoid two deadly asp strikes.

The party counterattacks.

Elsa throws a flask of oil at the cluster of snakes near the chest (and Malibran). Xale's trusty personservant Malvexa tosses a torch, lighting the oil. The three snakes are set aflame; Malibran also takes slight splashing damage [-2 hp].

Malibran bashes one of the flaming snakes with his mace, killing it.

Zoster smites an asp twice with his staff, killing it. His wolf companion bites another, wounding it but not killing it. Xale's war hammer smashes two more, leaving nothing of the two snakes but pulpy asp smears on the tomb floor.
The wolf's roll was actually another staff of striking roll, so I rolled damage for the wolf: Wolf damage: [1d4+1] = 4+1 = 5
Worren attacks another snake with his quarterstaff, scoring a glancing blow. Fosco hits a snake with a slice that leaves it bleeding, but alive and attacking.

Mason watches all this from the safety of his perch.

The party has inflicted heavy asp casualties. Four snakes down, eight remaining (of which two are aflame). But five members have been bitten by the venomous snakes.

Please post your saving throw rolls. When those are resolved, I'll ask for the next round's actions.

OOC: Making the Saving Throw roll with a +2 net (+4 for a Dwarf with CON 15; -2 per DM note; need to beat a 7)

[1d20+2] = 6+2 = 8

HOLY CRAP! I just BARELY made that! Whew!

Malibran curses the stings from the multiple bites as he crushes one to pulp:

Save vs. Poison is 8 (6 with a -2 penalty):

Save vs. Poison [1d20] = 8

Save vs. Poison [1d20] = 3

Malibran starts to feel.....(hopefully not dead :))

Rolling for Halbrad:

Halbrad save vs. poison: [1d20] = 7

...who misses his save (Halbrad needs an 8, gets +1 from a ring of protection, with the stated -2 means a roll of 6 vs. 8).

Just waiting on rolls for Fosco and Zoster now.

BTW, if I don't have saving throws from Fosco and Zoster by about midnight Eastern time, I'll go ahead and roll them myself to keep things moving. I'd rather players roll their own saves, but I also don't want to keep everyone else waiting for other players to roll.

Ouch.

Malibran, Halbrad, and Fosco are all poisoned by the asps' bites.

They will die at the end of the this round if the poison is not neutralized or slowed. Spell casting times are critical here. Slow poison takes 1 segment. Neutralize poison takes 7 segments. If you're relying on neutralize poison spells (and you probably are, since I only count one slow poison spell in the party at the moment), you'll need a good initiative roll to have any chance of saving Malibran, Halbrad, or Fosco.

And the snakes are still attacking...

Roll initiative and declare actions. The snakes rolled a 5. :(

Strategy questions
Yikes, three possible deaths in my first Tomb encounter. :o
How tall is the nearest chest to Elsa? In the picture of the chest with arrows, it seems taller than the one with asps. Asps are smaller snakes as snakes go, is that the case here?
Worren - magic missile the four remaining ones? as you get 4 missiles at your level that can be split up to different targets. The other two on fire may not pose as much threat or attack if they take continue taking flame damage.
Monk Mason, can you talk with them with your talk to animal power? They live if they stop the attacks, otherwise we will kill them all? Or is a reptile not considered an animal?
Being the new guy I'm not going to roll initiative this time. I don't want the guilt!

The party rolled a 5 also.

Apparently Fosco's next action is to die.

Some answers:
  • The chests are all about 4' long by 2' deep by 3' high.
  • They are described as "large asps." I'm not sure how large that is.

And I don't see that initiative roll in the dice roller. Can I either get a link or a new roll in the dice roller (with link)? Thanks.

We'll use that roll, but please make future rolls (if any...) with your Tomb of Horrors character, not an "on the fly" roll.

Thanks.

Also, I have more bad news. I used the wrong damage numbers from Zoster's first round attack. Two of the three snakes I said were dead are still alive, for a total of eight still alive at the start of round 2.

I'll correct the round 1 post in the morning.

Malibran retreats from the stinging asps as he clutches his symbol and whispers a prayer....

Neutralize poison cast on himself.

Worren (hp 53/53 ac 10 - but wearing Cloak of Displacement)

Seeing his companions succumbing to the effects of the asp's poison, Worren realizes that it may take too long to cast his single Neutralize Poison spell, and it could be wasted entirely. Hoping things will not need resort to needing his Raise Dead, Worren casts his quick Magic Missile spell hoping to kill as many remaining asps as possible, targetting the five snakes closest to himself (if there is a tie for the 5th snake, he targets the most injured looking one).

Worren - Magic Missile (1st 4): [1d4+1] = 3+1 = 4, [1d4+1] = 4+1 = 5, [1d4+1] = 3+1 = 4, [1d4+1] = 1+1 = 2
Worren - Magic Missile (5th missile): [1d4+1] = 1+1 = 2

I've updated last round's post to reflect the correct damage. Here's the current battle map:
