Who's got the keys? Mungo says. Let's try locking those Sleestaks in their own room, as was proposed earlier. I think we should get a move on and try to get out of Sleestak Land before the Hour of Mystery ends.

A thought occurs to him. Maybe those Sleestak things that teleported us here weren't Sleestaks. Maybe they were Altrusians, and they brought us here to try to help out those poor blighters.

If that's the case, maybe they should'a told somebody.
Maskelyn has no problem locking the Sleestak's in the room. He stands aside so the thieves can get at the doors.

Connak looks up.... Keys! Did someone say keys, let us see if one opens this cursed lock!

Finver (and SilverBen) chuckle at Maskelyn's retort to Mungo.

Mungo didn't get the joke at all. But as a cleric of Verne and Wells, he knows how to support a crowd when it's going in the right direction. He laughs like the sidekick in an inn with a visiting late evening talk show host. Heads around the room whip around. What? Did I do something funny? says the tinkerer/cleric mole-man who is mostly thinking about the implications of the broken scissors and one boot in his backpack? How to fix them? Where's the other one? Too many issues, too little time!

Ko-Nan looks over the door for any signs of what is beyond. He will wait for someone to try the keys before forcing it open.

At Mungo's suggestion, Maskelyn passes forward the ring of keys.

Mungo examines the contents of the beautiful chest as Finver lowers a gigantic sack around it and heaves it over his shoulder. (please add 60 lbs to encumbrance) The dwarf asks Ambrose about his scroll but the refined animal was unconscious when he was captured. "I'm afraid I don't know our current whereabouts on the map."

Draupadi, Fiefo and Yul stand guard as Ko-Nan squints at the three doors and finds the northeastern portal larger than the others.

The keys reach Connak at the southeastern door and one fits in its lock.

What lies beyond is not another rough-hewn cavern but a luxuriously appointed room. (room 35) Devoid of life, it holds an ornate desk, chairs, a carved wooden bed and an exquisite wardrobe, all in the peerless style of the Altrusian culture.

But strangely, to Connak's nose, the musty chamber smells of humans.

Connak murmurs I smell disuse... and humans! to the others and immediately moves in and first does a minute inspection of everything in the room, working in a clockwise direction So he turns left to start. After inspecting all the furnishings in the room -with special attendtion to the desk and wardrobe checking for traps and attempting to open locks, and pointing out items of interest, and assuming no big surprises he'll make another circuit of the room looking for hidden or concealed doors in the walls and floor.

Mungo enters the room, panning his helmet lantern around. This doesn't look like it's the Forbidden Chamber. No door for rigid Sleestak guards to stand in front of. I think it would be beyond that wall. He points a claw toward the east one, walks over and checks it for any concealed or hidden openings.
Been a lot of year's since I've played 1e, not sure I'm doing this right.

How many chairs are at the table?

Finver gently places the sack on the table and draws it down to study the craftmanship. He compares it to the wardrobe and styled carvings on the bed and furniture. Ambrose, can I examine your map?

I will check out the desk, looking for papers, parchments, wax seals or stamps that might indicate a person of office. He will open drawers and rummage through, pulling stuff out that may seem of interest.

Any inks and vials could be equipped to any scribe character.

Look under the bed. Maybe the other boot is there?

The adventurers open the crude door in the rough, subterranean tunnel and find a well appointed bedroom behind it!

Connak murmurs I smell disuse... and humans!

As Draupadi, Fiefo, Ko-Nan and Makelyn stand guard, the others carefully investigate the incongruously sumptuous chamber.

Connak finds the wardrobe untrapped, unlocked and completely empty. Then he joins Mungo in searching for concealed doors in the walls. None are discovered.

At Finver's request, Ambrose hands him his map scroll. It depicts a region unknown to him, with ocean, beaches, jungles and a vast wasteland called the Forbidden Zone. Also marked is something called Ape City.

Finver counts two chairs, one by the desk, and one by the wardrobe. The dwarf believes the furniture here to be of the same style as the chest on his back, that of the Altrusian culture.

Image

Yul finds the ornate desk unlocked. Nothing sits upon it or within it. He pulls out all its many empty drawers and behind the smallest one he discovers a half finished letter folded and tucked away.

Written in the common tongue of Men by an educated hand, it reads:

Dear Yaradaz,
My regards to The Academy. These Sleestak creatures are extremely strange, almost insane, but I am becoming increasing certain that there is something going on here. Something sinister appears to be working behind the scenes, and I am not at all sure that the King who has hired me is actually the one in charge of this place.
I have made careful preparations to explore what lies beneath the lake and plan to investiga

The letter stops there. The adventurers know the Academy is a human college of sorcery in Denethix, one of the few allowed in the Land of One Thousand Towers.

"Beneath the lake?", Mungo says. Not in the lake or at the bottom of the lake, but beneath it. The moleman naturally likes subterranean places, he's intrigued. Ambrose, do you know anything about the human who wrote this?

Maskelyn has passed the keyring to whomever needs it. He gawks in open admiration at the craftsmanship of the desk and wardrobe. These would fetch a fortune back home- too bad we don't have any way to take them along.
He studies the underside of the desk, hoping for a hidden compartment.

Finver ardently supports Mungo's statement with, "Ya, ya, ya! Did ya notice how those reptilians were getting all nervous with me standing so close to the edge of their lake? And, ya know, I'm sure there was some shape big enough to be seen under the surface of the water from the shore. Let's move outta here before Dream Hours end and they find that visitor's cell empty and come looking for us."
