ATSC (Day 9): The party regroups from their missions...

#222 Post by Argennian »

~ After being greeted and queried on their mission by Gentleman Billy, Emm is the next to proffer her thoughts on the northern trail scout trio's heavy cargo. Although she appears initially unnerved by their slaying of the large boar, she eventually reaches a level of understanding and justification on her own while detailing her previous considerations of their utilization as animal allies and finally suggesting they ultimately save a portion of pork for the Great Owl, if and when she returns.

Before he responds to either, Bogdan drags the heavy travois over near the fire pit and sets it down. He then removes his armor and takes a seat at the fire. Ulrich and Sorel join him and also settle in for the debrief. Rip and Thomas are both present preparing lunch and bring over food and drink.

Bog responds first to the druidess, telling her the overgrown swine was indeed aggressive and gave them no choice in the matter. He then specifies their mission to reach the cave for that visual reconnoiter was further complicated by the presence of a large man-eating plant on the cliff side there. The big fighter shows off the wicked burns he received to his hands during the encounter and then goes on to explain the things they returned with were located amongst the pile of bones from it's many previous victims. At this point, he moves over to retrieve those items and begin laying them out for all to see while offering an explanation that, thanks to Ulrich, they determined most of it is magical in nature. It's an impressive amount of gear alright, and everyone present let's their imaginations take flight. He ends his dissertation with a description of the cliff cave and what they discovered about it's inner features. It's certainly a shocking fact in itself, and fans the flames of imagination and consideration about just what else this mysterious island has to offer...

Ulrich produces the items he carried back to their impromptu beach display and adds his agreement that the killer vine was indeed a very tough opponent. The cleric engages the druidess about Bog's wounds, stating that he was unable to fully heal him after the incident.

Emm responds dutifully to the request, having also seen the terrible burns herself. She steps over, withdraws a piece of mistletoe from her component pouch and casts a cure light wounds spell (+5hp) on the big man. Realizing he's still not fully healed, she then casts another (+8hp). The magical acts revitalize the Half-orc incredibly and his burns look much less distinct afterward.

One the magical healing is applied, the druidess begins to debrief Bog, Ulrich and Sorel on what they came up against on the southern trail during their mission. She tells them about the Karagonian soldier she charmed, whom is now with Shanny as they speak, as well as their trained hawk, Chaska, that she interacted with and currently waits on now. The results of those interactions led them to discover exactly what the soldiers' objectives are here on the island. They are after the Giant Owl! Their hunting party numbers five in total, one of which is a cleric and another a lieutenant in the Karagonian naval marines. Regardless of these facts, Emm proposes plans and strategies for ways they might track down and neutralize these men. She makes it clear she means to do so just as soon as they rest, replenish spells and reequip themselves.

~ Gentleman Billy and Captain Billings take in the after action report from the northern trail scouts and quickly scrutinize the items they returned with. Sorel is recruited to deliver them to Najania, Ziffiris and Aramis straight away, to be properly identified and confirmed safe. Cutler returns to the beach HQ and proceeds to gut and clean the big wild boar for dinner, showing Rip and Thomas how it's done. Billy urges the party to rest up as they're able, including casters praying for and memorizing more spells. He also details that anyone needing anything at all come see him. Once they have garnered more information, bar any unforeseen encounters or eventualities, he'll call everyone together for dinner to discuss their situation and options going forward.

After a rest, and after attending any "normal" duties he is assigned, Bog devotes several hours to practicing and training, if any of the sword trainers are available.

Emm will await Chaska or the Great Owl for as long as logically possible, before she agrees she must rest and ask for blessings.

That second material component marked off, spells changed.

ATSC (Day 9): The party rests to be ready...

#226 Post by Argennian »

~ With the northern trail AAR delivered and both groups debriefed, lunch is finished and the party settles into their respective tasks...

Lauranna and Ulrich retire to the ship. The High elf magic-user/thief is already back in her bunk, catching up on an afternoon nap and dreaming of what spells she's going to memorize. The dwarf cleric seeks out his mentor and joins the blinded high priest/fighter lord in the captain's cabin for further training and meditations...

Not having any official duties to confront them, other than considerations that they may soon get a chance to challenge the invading soldiers, both Bogdan and Caelvanna return to their martial training. The Half-orc swordsman continues drilling with his longsword and the Wild-elf archer with her short bow...

Emm remains at the beach to wait for the arrival of the soldiers' trained hawk, or for any sign of the great owl. Neither appear and the wait grows long. Billy finally relieves her vigil so she can get some rest and pray for more spells. The old master thief reassures that if either show, she'll be notified straight away. Not wanting to be far off if needed, the druidess settles in out of the way on the beach for a quick nap and to begin praying to the Aerth Mother for more spells...

~ The day progresses and mighty Hazara eventually begins her always visually-stunning assault on the watery western horizon. The aromatic smell of wild island pork mixes with that of the usual seafood fare and it's soon time for the evening meal. Rested and replenished, the party gathers about the camp fire.

Billy arrives from the latest meeting in the command tent and settles in to join them for some food and drink. He consumes both quickly and once everyone else is finished, proceeds to provide what updates he can. There's been no further sightings of any ships: navy, pirate or otherwise. A good thing. Also no sign of the soldiers' hawk, the great owl nor Emm's pet seagull. A not so good thing. According to the elder master thief, Shanny was able to learn a few things from the charmed soldier the southern trail strike team returned with.

First and foremost is confirmation that the warship Gallant is most thankfully not here at the islands to search for them. Although always on active lookout for any eastern ships on the high seas, they are actually here at the Sprice Tridents on a mission to the furthest east of the three large isles. As far as the charmed corporal knows, it's some operation concerning the pirate confederacy and the island chain's native barbarian populace.
Further intel garnered confirms the Karagonian soldiers presently on the island are in fact here to hunt the giant owl, but that was not their original, primary mission. First off, they went ashore to the isle just west of them with another longboat of soldiers to establish a secured camp and lookout position. They were to remain there during their operation and keep watch for any ships approaching from the west or southwest. If any were seen, they were to signal the Gallant, using the trained ravens to do so. Lieutenant Brom and those that landed here only did so when they learned of the existence of the giant owl. Knowing these creatures are highly intelligent and extremely rare, this lieutenant figured he'd try to capture it, not just for the large amount of gold he could fetch but to learn more of the islands themselves. Once this was accomplished, they were to return to the isle just west and hold position there until relieved. They were told to expect being there at least one week's time, but more likely closer to two.

"... So it would seem our Karagonian Navy friends did not know we were here after all, and are merely on the island to undertake the unofficial and most greedy business of capturing the Great Owl. This bodes well for us, in that they were not expected to rendezvous back up with the Gallant for some time, and allows for some flexibility in how we may deal with them. But before we make any plans in that regard, I'd like to know how each of you feel about it. I ask you tell the truth and fear not what any others might think. Would you be willing to confront and try to capture them? If they do not wish to be captured, would you be willing to... adjudicate them, if it becomes necessary?"

***************************************************

OOC: apols for the ongoing delays here all. I still need to post more but wanted to at least get something up today before work. I'm planning on finishing up the rest tonight and will update the treasure/XP taken as it's identified; TOD adjusted & new spell rosters noted!

Bogdan stares at the yellow and orange flames of the small campfire for a moment in silence. Then he spits on the sand between his feet and growls, "We can stake the lot of them to the beach, let the owl eat their eyes, and leave the rest to the giant crabs, for all I care. Better to be done with them than to have them find something out and report our position back in that shite hole we used to call home, is what I think."

Ulrich says, "The Common tongue has no word for it, but the dwarves call such situations khekhnidzein." He pauses for a moment in contemplation. "It is hard to explain, but the basic meaning is when you must do something awful, because the consequences of not doing it are more awful still.

"Such is the case here. Cleansing the world of evil, such as that evil demon-child, is an unqualified good. But to kill a free-willed being, even one committed to evil, can stain the soul. I like it not. But as I've said, this is khekhnidzein. Though I do not wish to slay our enemies, I will do so, begging the Dwarf-Father to cleanse their souls and ours, even as I crush their heads with my mace."

Ulrich pauses again before looking around at his companions. "That's how I see it, anyway."

Lauranna eats her fill after recommitting Sleep to her memory. As the group settles in by the fire, she too is deep in thought. "Perhaps they may reconsider their loyalties if given the opportunity. If they don't, they cannot simply be left behind,"

She plays with a handful of sand before tossing it into the fire.

"But, they must be hunted. The great owl cannot be endangered."

ATSC (Day 9): The party defines moralities & make plans...

#230 Post by Argennian »

~ The once-again active master thief looks around the fire with an unusual intensity as he poses the question...

Billy nods in acknowledgement and proffers his usual smile. There's a look of both solidarity and sadness to his weathered visage. "I agree, Bogdan. Although I'm loathe to take just about any man's life unless absolutely necessary, there are consequences and repercussions that must always be considered. Regardless of how it goes down, the fact remains that they will likely never again leave this island..."

"But, they must be hunted. The great owl cannot be endangered."
"I agree we should do all we can to protect the Great Owl, Lauranna. I only hope those soldiers don't reach her before we can intercede on her behalf," Billy details, stoking the fire.

Before he can add any further thoughts or Emm can reconfirm her opinion on the matter, a familiar bird-call like whistle emanates from outside the spell bubble, somewhere within the southern treeline. The poignant conversation stops and everyone on the beach and ship prepare for DefCon1 status. The whistle sounds again, this time a bit louder. Billy signals the ship and returns the whistle.

A few moments later, Sorel literally materializes at the southern trail head. Readied weapons are waved off and trigger fingers relaxed. The easterner half-elf makes a special hand signal before walking forward and through the protective spell bubble. Once inside, he heads straight to the command tent where Billings and Arak await. Billy excuses himself, gets up and moves to meet him there. They share words and after a minute, the old thief and senior member of The Hands returns to the campfire to update the others.

"I decided to send Sorel out earlier, to see if he could locate our Karagonian interlopers. It seems they've made it most of the way up the southern cliffs and look to be setting up camp in a cave or depression on the outer crater near the center of the island. Of note is that he only counted four soldiers present, not five. He also details seeing no sign of the hawk that Emm communicated with, so we can't be sure if it's still with them or not. I suppose it's possible they sent it off to deliver a communique back to the isle west of us, or maybe to look for their missing men.

"Either way, we need to develop a plan on how to confront them. The terrain where they're located is extremely steep. Sorel indicates we would likely not be able to approach them where they're at without being seen. Therefore, I think we should move into position below them to prepare an ambush and then stage an event that would get them to retreat and fall back to their longboat. Sorel located a cave and small plateau partway up the trail, perhaps the same one that they described in the communique that was intercepted. He said the terrain there made it a perfect spot for just such an action..."

Billy stops to light his pipe and take a few puffs before looking around at those gathered and proffering a query. "I know we have yet to confirm details on the how and when, but can I count on any volunteers for the ambush?"

This is the point when Emm becomes oblivious to all other dialog, and her dark eyes drill into Gentleman Billy, not with anger but... Perhaps confusion? Sir, respectfully, "capture?"
"... Of note is that he only counted four soldiers present, not five. ..."
The Priestess narrows her eyes. Have they sent one back? she theorizes, before lowering and shaking her head. First Kuda, then Chaska, and the Great Owl... I will be remembered as Emm of the Missing Birds.

Bog chuckles, "Daft question. Of course I'll help. Couldn't stomach runnin' away from them before, but I was obeying my aunt's wishes. You tell me we need to take out more of the King's soldiers? Where do you want me to go?" He ends by drawing his Karagonian sword, the irony of which does not miss by him.

Lauranna continues to sit by the fire, playing with a dagger in her fingers. As the time for a decision comes, she has already made her decision. Maybe to make her point, or just to relieve some frustration, she thumps the dagger into a log across the fire. Standing up, she finally speaks. "When do we leave?" she asks.

ATSC (Day 9/10): Ambush confirmed/mission launch...

~ Billy can sense the turbulent waves of emotion crashing upon one another behind the young druid's fiery gaze. He parks his easy smile and assumes a more businesslike persona. "That's right, Emm. We'll take 'em, dead or alive. Either way, we end their threat to the Great Owl and find out what they know. Tis much easier to extract such information from a man when he's alive but I will trust yours and the others' discretion in the matter..."

The Priestess narrows her eyes. Have they sent one back? she theorizes, before lowering and shaking her head. First Kuda, then Chaska, and the Great Owl... I will be remembered as Emm of the Missing Birds.
Billy stashes his serious visage and once again assumes his easy smile. "This chapter has not yet been written, my young friend. There could be a simple explanation why none of the avians have yet returned, and not all them directly detrimental to our position. We'll just have to wait and find out..."

Already knowing he could never keep the druidess from the upcoming mission, the elder thief chooses to leave it at that and return his attention back to the others. Although agreeing to take part in the operation, Ulrich details his lack of stealthy assets, and that he'd prefer to continue his training. Emm counters the suggestion that the time for action is upon them and that it will likely take the party's combined martial might to pull off the mission successfully. Bogdan again declares his solidarity for the upcoming action, detailing that he never really had any other thoughts or intentions in the matter. He draws his coveted masterwork Karagonian blade, already envisioning it running red with Karagonian soldiers' blood. Caelvanna chooses to forgo any lengthy explanation for her participation by simply nodding to Billy when his eyes find hers. No need for verbosity here, as far as the Wild-elf is concerned. Lauranna shows her growing impatience more readily, thumping one of her dual daggers of death into a piece of wood by the fire pit and asking straightforwardly when the talking and planning stops and gives way to action.
"When do we leave?" she asks.

"An hour before dawn," Billy details, reaching into a nearby chest and retrieving more of Shanny's home-brewed healing elixirs. He hands one of the earthenware flasks to Bogdan, to replace the one he used earlier on the northern trail, then an extra one for Ulrich, just in case the young priest has need of more firepower in the healing department.

"Sorel and Cutler will lead you to the first cave and then take up a position below you, off the trail. I will work with Aramis and Ziffiris in their creating an illusion that will get the soldiers to... reconsider their presence on the cliffs and fall back to their longboat, hopefully with much more haste than caution. When they arrive at your position, you spring your trap and take 'em down. How that happens, I'll leave up to you. If any of them do manage to get past you, Sorel and Cutler will be there to cut them off.

"So unless they're any further questions or propositions, let's call it a night and plan on meeting back here on the beach an hour before dawn. Plan to travel light and be ready to fight,"
he offers with a final puff from his pipe and a flourish of his free hand.

With that, the party concludes the mission briefing and all eventually return to their respective bunks and hammocks to grab some shut eye before their early morning departure.

**************************************************

The dawn of the new day is still in her planning stages when the party's awakened, gears up and reassembles at the beach HQ. Cutler and Sorel are already present with Billy, dressed for the occasion and looking ready to rumble. A tired looking Rip & Thomas pass out Shanny's revitalizing tea to any that need or want it. Billy offers a few final words before go-time.

"... Keep an eye on the cliffs above once you're in position. A few hours from now, we'll look to drop our illusionary measure, to spook and flush 'em your way. And do be on the lookout for that missing fifth soldier as well. Unless they're any questions, I will wish you good luck then, friends!"

***************************************************

OOC: ok folks, please detail Marching Order, Weapon In Hand and what gear your character's bringing with them. Sorel will take the lead and Cutler will take rearguard en route to the lower cave; HPs & TOD adjusted.

Al: Bog gets back to full hit points from Shanny's revitalizing tea and a good night's rest; please also note the replacement home-brew healing elixir on your character sheet.

Lauranna wakes and dresses light, eschewing her armor in favor of moving freely. She breaks her fast with a light meal of fruit and bread. With a serious look on her face, she approaches the druidess and wraps her arm around her waist. "Don't worry Emm, we will get them."

"Capture," The Druid repeats this from the previous evening, as if still chewing on the idea. She smiles slightly and nods to her Elven friend. I trust Gentleman Billy did not mean capture all of them. She begins readying her gear, donning her armor and shield, strapping her seldom-used scimitar around her waist, and relying on her trusty spear for the majority of any hand to hand combat, tho she wisely will try to avoid this. The missing fifth one troubles me the most. I fear he may be lurking about, in wait for us. Without my pets, it will fall to you, Lauranna, to be our eyes and ears out there, and that frightens me. You and I are not so physically blessed as the others, and it will be extremely dangerous for us both to be at point. Yet because the success of this relies on the utmost stealth, it requires our delicate touch. I am nowhere near as aware as you, and far less stealthy, but this tangled jungle has become like a home to me, answering all my calls just as if it were an oaken forest. It only makes sense if you and I take the lead. Emm pauses, her eyes drifting for a moment. I think it would be wise to include Caelvanna in the point. Like you, she is quick, highly aware and... She is very tough. If we are ambushed, you can blend into the jungle, I will call it to life, Caelvanna will... Do what she does best, while Bogdan and Ulrich provide the anchors, if we need to fall back.

If Billy's plan works, I would try to ensnare the Karagonians in Strangleweed. It should be possible then to... "Capture" one or two of them. Their Priest still worries me. As Ulrich can attest, Priests are dangerous adversaries. Again she pauses, and lowers her eyes. I want to thank you all, my friends, for taking on this task, whether it be in my cause or any other. I have little doubt we will be victorious, simply because of our conviction, but I also concede we will likely suffer greatly for our efforts.

Ulrich nods in agreement with Emm's plan. He says a quick prayer to Moradin, and makes ready to leave with the others.

OOC: Updated character sheet and battle sheet to show extra healing elixir.

Bog replaces his used healing potion, grabs a pair of Karagonian masterwork spears, hefts his pack*, and heads off in the front of the marching order, or as close near the front as he can get.

*Aside from the crossbow he can't easily fire and the wet weather gear, Bog takes most of his belongings in his pack along with him, including several days of trail rations. Just in case.

OOC: Depending on the results of the research on the latest magic items, he might also have something from them. That is, if there was time enough to evaluate them before the party leaves. I think the other players should get first pick at anything, but I assume there is probably something there that would interest Bogdan...
