Corvin

Corvin is pleased the dogs have taken to him, he fusses them for a bit and then leaves them to their food, it looks like they need it.

He takes the bracers from Mordred. "You think they are something special?" he says before examining them and then putting them on.

"A vault? That sounds very interesting! There we're plenty of keys on that bunch from what I saw. Let's go and take a look."

Geraint leads the way. "No traps or anything. Vane considered such a thing, but Hrek shut him down hard. Pointed out the traps were more likely than not just going to kill one of us."

He takes the keys from Mordred and opens the vault door. He pushes it open. There are three chests in the back of the room, chained to a wall. Two of the chests are locked. Inside the first one there:

1. Six small sacks containing about 315 copper pieces, and 87 silver pieces.
2. A potion bottle that looks empty, except you can feel some kind of liquid sloshing around in it when you pick it up.

The second chest contains:

1. 8 small sacks containing 46 silver and 245 copper pieces.

The third chest is unlocked and empty.

Geraint frowns. "Huh. Expected to see here some expensive gift Vane got for Helda. He was bragging about it to us the other day."

Between the two chests, you have a grand total of 189 silver, or 189 XP / 4 = 47.25, rounded up to 48 XP (and silver) each. Sebastian gets half XP at 24.

Corvin

Corvin is quite happy to tuck his share of the coins away safe. On seeing the apparently not-empty potion bottle he looks both amused and confused.

When Geraint mentions the missing present he shrugs "Maybe it's hidden in the bedroom somewhere. We could go look now, or after we've dealt with the basement. I'd prefer to deal with the basement first."

Mordred

Mordred nods in satisfaction as he stows his share of the coins. "Good work on the vault, everyone. It’s a small fortune, but it’s likely money extorted from others. I’ll consider ways to use it to help those who need it."

Turning his attention back to Geraint, he listens to the information about the missing present. "Helda might have fled when the commotion started. We should keep an eye out for her - do you think she might have gone to call others?"

He then moves through the room, checking for any hidden compartments or secret areas."Before we head to the basement, let's do a second pass around this room to see if there’s anything we missed. Perhaps something is hidden under a floorboard, or the chests have a false bottom or sliding panel."

When Mordred studies the third chest, he finds a key on the underside, and indeed, a false bottom. He finds a secret, locked compartment that fits the key under the chest. Inside the secret compartment, he finds a dozen fine, floral perfumes.

Sebastian whistles. "Those have Nina's mark. Her husband's a Druid, and they sell some very nice perfumes made from Thornwall flowers. Those have got to be worth a solid gold each."

Corvin

Corvin whistles at the bottles "Nice find! Let's take it all downstairs. We should lock the main door while we're in the basement."

90 minutes left on Protection from Evil

The group heads downstairs, and find Kasper sitting at the kitchen table, treating his wounds
1d20+16+1 = 21 > 20, 1d4 = 1, heals 1 HP. He grimaces, and winces, and takes the proffered healing potion, downing it 1d6+1 = 4, which should be enough to fully heal him. You all have 1 healing potion left. Kasper sighs as his wounds knit.

The group lowers the wooden bar over the door, and then head to the stairs leading down into the basement. The dogs shrink down and whimper, and crawl on their bellies towards the fire on the farside of the kitchen.

"Remember," says Geraint, nervously shifting his sword from hand to hand. "When we sent the family down there, they suddenly dropped out of sight when they got the bottom of the stairs, like they fell, and the screams..."

Corvin

"Some kind of pit maybe. Let's get plenty of light sources and take it slowly."

He looks around the kitchen for lanterns and torches, remembering there were torches in the bedroom if he can't find any here.

He doesn't find any in the kitchen (clearly they rely primarily on the hearth for light), but it only takes a moment to go back upstairs and come back down with some torches. Feel free to mark down however many you take. There were three in Vane's bedroom.

Corvin

The lupin returns from downstairs with three torches.

"I'll light one and carry it. We ought to take the other two just in case, who wants one?"

Kasper and Geraint each take one. Neither has a shield, and can fight reasonably well with only one hand.

Kasper unlocks the door, and pushes it open. A stone staircase descends into darkness. An icy breeze wafts into the tower and cuts to the bone, carrying with it the stench of rotting flesh. A faint chanting can be heard, the words guttural, harsh and inhuman, the pitch making everyone's ears ache and their skin throb.

In what order are people descending down the stairs, how, and what kind of safety precautions (if any) are you taking?

Corvin

Corvin shivers as the breeze moves past him, but forces himself on, as his family needs him (at this point he doesn't allow himself any other thought but they are still alive and prisoners down there).

He looks around for something to keep the door open."I'll go first if you want?"

Are the stairs single file?

Yes.

There is nothing immediately on hand to keep the door open, though Corvin does now remember Vane and Helda's room a wooden bar leaning against the wall next to the door, clearly intended to be used to bar the door.

Corvin

"Will someone help me bring the bar down I saw in the bedroom? I'm hoping we can use it to jam the door open, I don't fancy it slamming shut behind us."

Mordred

Busy weekend, so a post more along the lines of old school gaming - less RP, and more gaming ;)

Mordred will assist Corvin with the bar, and then he will take the lead down the stairs. He is the best armored.

Corvin is happy to go second, to help provide light.

We're getting into a very obviously dangerous, less traveled part of the tower, so I'd like to know some details on how you plan on going down the stairs. If we have to wait until early next week for you to post that's fine, but I'm not going to be making too many assumptions here.

We could go down in pairs, each pair has a torch and stays a few steps ahead of the pair behind. Move down slowly and carefully as we know there is done kind of hidden pit.

Does anyone have a 10' pole, or is particularly adept at finding traps? In case there is indeed a pit or another trap?

Is there is broom, or similar, in the kitchen? Corvin has find traps, so he could move down with the broom (if there is one), checking
