Fitz frowns as he watches the goop creatures moving toward them. He tries to make out a face or at least some type of communication...thingy...but he can't really see one.
"Hey there, erm, folks! I'm Fitz and this is my friend, Dex, and my other friends."
He jerks a thumb over his shoulder at the rest of his companions.
"We came to collect some...er...goop. Do you have any to spare?"

Dexter looks at the trail the creatures are leaving behind. It reminds him of something.....
"Oh," he says. "Get back away from them." He says it calmly and just loud enough for everyone to hear it. "I saw something like that when I first got to the island. It had .... dissolved ... some guy named Bing on the ship I arrived on. It didn't leave anything but a wet-looking slime like what's behind them. We should back away. And if the young are in the ooze, they might be just as dangerous. We need a plan or something."
Dexter begins backing away in the direction he came, looking back to make sure their escape hasn't been cut off.

Hearing Dex's warning and being in the back of the group stops and starts heading the other direction. Draws his mace and heads back the way they came from.
Don't have to tell me twice. Those things look freaky.

Sir William Narramore
From his position behind the two front-men, he catches the warning and glances casually behind them. At the same time, he'll buckle his breastplate back on as they make their measured retreat, keeping carefully away from any of the pools. He isn't sure what good metal will do against goop, but it feels solid and familiar. "If we can shake these things, perhaps Drakkar can get some goop on the end of his pole."

This Place Is The Pits!
Sunday, 21st of Goodmonth
Mid-Late Afternoon, Hot, Humid, Smokey, Bug Free
Fitz makes his polite introductions to the oncoming creatures, but gets no replies to his inquisitive pleasantries.
Dex looks back at the empty wasteland behind them, telling the others to keep their distance from the ooze people, suddenly remembering something very similar he saw on the ship when he first arrived on the island.
Max and Drakkar take little convincing to turn and move away, neither elf nor dwarf liking the looks of these creatures one bit.
Narramore prepares for combat, but instead ushers the others away from the creatures and away from the edges of any nearby pools. The oncoming threats move quite slowly, so it is easy for the group to distance themselves if they wish.
The pair of oncoming oozemen stop advancing once they see the group departing, now simply standing there watching them leave.

Dexter doesn't stop until he gets near the treeline again. Once he does, he says, "OK, well, I don't think this is a loss. We can still pull this off, but we need a tool for the job. We need a long-handled ladle. More like a long-handled bucket. Something we can rush in, scoop out the goop without touching it or letting it touch us. My suggestion is go back, get what we need, and then come back. And there may be folks in town that want to know about the dwarves' lizard corral."

Once they get to the tree line opposite the creatures.
Did you see that they stopped after we started to leave? I believe there might be some intelligence there. They did no type of hostile act even when we got close. Do you suppose these things might be friendly? I know it is a wild guess but they showed no aggression.
Max scratches his head like he is thinking.

Dex nods at Max' comments. "I mean, you can give that a try, I suppose. But there are two points you might want to keep in mind. First, we didn't come out here to find new friends, admirable as that is. And secondly, I did see something very similar to these things dissolve a guy. So we might want to wait until we know more about them and have done what we came out to do. So, just to make it plain, I am not going over there to say hello."

The knight watches the creatures from a distance, observing their movements with curiosity.
Does he believe there are pools with thick enough goop that can be reached and harvested without allowing these odd creatures time to approach close enough to make contact with them?

Definitely. You guys were a long way into the clearing.

"They are a curious lot, indeed. I admit--I, too, am curious what they are and what motivates them. But I wonder if we shouldn't save that mystery for another trip. We can approach that pit--" he points to one with the thicker goop that is a goodly distance from the slime people--"get our goop, and be gone before they reach us. Then try to wind our way back home without encountering too many more obstacles." He sends them an inquiring look. "Sound good?"

Fitz is disappointed in Dexter and is about to tell him so, when Sir Narramore suggests another, less deadly option.
"Hey, that's a swell idea, Sir Narramore! Let's do that...before I melt from the heat. Whew!"

Following the advice of their paladin, the group continues to move away from the slime men, heading back towards the jungle trail, only stopping once they are far enough away to address the goop pools safely and without incident. The creatures seem to follow for a moment, but they move so slowly that it is difficult to tell if they are moving or not once you get further away.
Still sweating profusely in the heat of this rocky wasteland, Fitz stares into the grey pool with Nallissa's empty container in his hand, wondering the best way to procure some of the strange substance without getting any of it on himself. The stench and fumes of the pools are starting to get to the party, causing them to feel a bit tired and a little woozy.
Actions?
You are probably about half way in between the monsters at the center of the clearing and the jungle now.

"Do you all feel that?" Dex asks. "That is what I was worried about from the beginning. These fumes are dangerous. If we fainted in there, I'll bet we'd be dead in a couple hours. But at least think about what I've said. If we had a long-handled bucket, we could run in there, scoop out what we need and get the heck out of there in a few minutes. It might well be worth the trip back to town."

Max looks at Sir William.
What about a helmet? We could use that as a bucket. Tie a rope through the eye holes and toss it in. It would not be full but enough to fill a vial.

Sir William Narramore
The Paladin makes a sour face, blinking to clear his head and fight the encroaching dizziness. "I like not that idea, master scholar," he mutters. "But let's do it and be quick, for I believe Dexter is correct. Remaining here much longer will be the death of us."
As he speaks, he'll cut a bit of rope the proper length and loop it through the visor of his helm, tie it securely, and look to the others. "I will venture to the nearest pit with the thicker goop and scoop out a helmet full. I'll not ask you to accompany me unless you wish to. Perchance this will work. If not, we'll call it a day and retreat."
He closes his eyes and murmurs a prayer for strength and success, then unbuckles his breastplate to gain a bit of respite from the heat, drains his waterskin, and moves at a brisk pace toward the pool--without getting too close lest the wooziness hit and he fall into the goop.
If that's too much for one round, I'll break it up.

Well, we're not involved in combat or anything right now, so no big deal if you take a longer action.

Since he is going out there let's tie the rope from Dexter on to Sir Narramore so if he falls in we can drag him out. I will venture out to make sure he stays safe if no one else will.

"Think of me what you will," says Dexter. "But I will remain here and clear my lungs of these fumes. If one of us falls out there, I will, at least, be fit enough to drag you back." He hands his rope, with a harness already tied into one end, to Max. "You should probably get the rig around him now, as sitting out there in the fumes, tying it into place, is likely to claim you as well."

Fitz wipes his face for what seems to be the hundredth time and takes a swig from his waterskin.
He looks at Dex, and then to Drakkar. "What say you, friend Dwarf? Should I stay or should I go...with the others I mean?"
