The floor is near flush with the pivot top section, so Zix pushes it open some with her foot to insert the shims. It is secure.

Zix will step carefully on the trap door to test that it's safe.

Zix carefully tests the trap door and it is now safe. On the other side, the corridor continues 15' then gently turns south for another 10' before dead-ending.

She'll go down the corridor to the south and check for secret doors...

Zix finds no secret doors in the corridor all the way to the dead end. The oddly long pit top is behind her now.

Zix sighs and decides to try to lift the pit top and look inside it.

Strength check please...

Zix heaves upward on the lid..

Zix makes a STR (16) check: [1d20] = 19

.. and fails in spite of a mighty attempt.

That was a stinker. Can she try again?

It would have to be a different technique, not a straight lift.

Zix curses the door and decides the only way to open it is to pull out the shims she so carefully inserted to avoid the trap.

With the shims removed, the pivot slab of the trap is free to be activated with proper weight. Zix considers how to get in there gracefully and harmlessly.

And how is such a way

Zix will try pushing the slab opened with her foot and try to take a look inside.

Zix wedges the pivoted pit top up a few inches, enough to tell from the above torch light that it is a large 20'x30' room. Is that a dog roaming in there?

Zix reaches into her pack and unwraps the raw steak she's been carrying. She places the parchment it's wrapped in back in her pack, then pushes the top down again and dangles the steak down.

"Here pooch!" she says, and whistles, "Here dog!" trying to get the dog's attention.

It is 20' drop into a 20'x30' room with a dog prowling around. It looks up, growls, sniffs. There are two doors in the east wall, two in the west, and one in the north.

Zix will take her dagger, slice of a small bit of the steak and toss it to the dog.

The dog wags its tail and starts to devour the meat.

[slgarrett]

She slices off another bit and throws it to the dog and coos, "That's a good dog. Yes you are!"

Is there a wall she could climb down or will she have to do some kind of ninja climb at the overhang?

[Grognardsw]

The dog continues to eat the meat while Zix slips through the pit top and climbs down the wall.
