Akhilleus

"I have five more. One torch at a time is enough. We don't want to use them up too fast.

We need something long. Like a pole or a spear with which we could tap that room floor before us... But we don't have anything like that.
He sighs.

"Does anyone have an axe? We might be able to make something from the doors or the table."

He will head over to the table to see how it is constructed.

How long is it and how wide are the planks?

Valkrina

Well we are not going to find much out unless we 'crash test dummies' the theories. I will step out on the right side if someone steps out, keeping in step on the left.

I do have my spiked spear to prod the ground ahead. Apart from more spikes, is there anything noteworthy to be seen in the pit? Any bodies impaled? It just seems rather odd to have an open pit that guards nothing unless the idea is to deliberately funnel folk to the sides where a crossbow trap, darts? are fired with more effectiveness.

Hmmm, with that in mind. I think I am going to suggest a change of plan!.

Don't break the table up, use it as a big shield from such missiles. "Form up, hunched behind the table, advance down the passage, get to the far door."

You cant see anything in the pit from the doorways.

The table is about 3 feet long and maybe 2 wide.

It could be easily smashed to get the legs off etc.

Euripides Nereos

Euripides will get on his hands and knees, slowly advancing down the right-hand ledge. Using his rusty metal tankard, he will test the ground ahead of him as he goes. He will also inspect the wall to his right, looking for anything that may indicate a trap- a wire, pressure plate, holes which projectiles or gas could come out of...

Drest

Drest will work his way slowly down the left hand side, testing for traps as he goes.

The Pit Room

Disregarding Valkrina's random suggestions, Drest and Euripides agree to crawl forth slowly from each doorway to search for any traps.

They don't see anything remarkable on the floor or the walls as the inch forward, but thanks to the extra light from the second torch, the Purlioner of Rel suddenly holds his hand up to Drest at about the halfway point along the narrow floor. Euripides just barely spots what looks like a pressure plate slightly beyond the middle of the path. When he points to it, Drest spots a second identical slightly raised stone in the floor in front of him as well.

They both look over the mechanism for a moment, finding the double trap to be extremely well designed. Will they try to press onward beyond the plates, trying not to set it off as they pass, or will they attempt to disarm the trap completely?

Akhilleus

Nothing what's going on from their conversation, the warrior looks for something heavy enough to be thrown at one of the preasure plates once his companions are back in safety. "If we find something heavy enough, maybe you can place it on the pressure plates!" He will light another torch if need be although he will do so only if there's no chance of seeing anything at all, since he knows it's important to save as many as possible.

You could try a running jump and leap over the plates. How big are they. Usually quite small as a big plate takes more pressure to trigger it.

Alternatively, trigger the plates from safety and see what happens?

The bard, offers a couple of suggestions to those exploring along the pit room.

"That's the problem. How do we trigger then from a distance of we don't have a spear, polearm, or anything of the sort.

I'm looking for something heavy to throw at them from a distance."

How big are the pressure plates? Can you jump over them?

The plates appear to be about 5’ deep and stretch the entire width of the ledge.

Jumping them would take a simple Test of Dexterity.

Valkrina

Takes the table top, shorn of the wooden legs. She carries it as a shield.

Having suggested we just jump the pressure plates it ought to be something she follows up on. Normally Dex checks are in her favour, nimble and agile as she is, but ...

Valkrina: basic Dex check 1-4 [1d6]=5

Euripides Nereos

Now that he knows there is a pressure plate waiting to be triggered, the Purloiner of Rel begins a meticulous search for what exactly the plate is likely to set off. He looks for things such as holes in the wall or ceiling- hell, the floor too, for that matter- that might allow projectiles or gas to be released. He searches for cracks in the wall that could signify a section that might pop out, knocking an unsuspecting victim into the spike pit. He'll check the floor, looking for any crack which may indicate the entire ledge could tilt, thereby depositing anyone on it into the pit. He'll...oh, look, Valkrina's jumping over- no, onto the other plate. He sighs, hoping her impatience will not affect him on this ledge as well.

Keeping guard while the others work, the Ixian looks on incredulously as Valkrina tries to jump the trap.

The Pits Room

Akhilleus readies a third torch, suggesting something heavy be thrown onto the pressure plate from the doorway.

Rel's purloiner studies the stonework carefully, not finding any wires, holes, or other indications of how this trap was set. The one thing he does notice is an obvious paper thin gap between the stone of the wall and the surface of the floor. Before he has time to investigate further, the impatient bard leaps into action.

With Drest and Euripides still crawling across the opposite ledges, Valkrina kicks the legs off the wooden table, using it as a shield while she attempts to leap over the scout and the pressure plate in the floor. With the extra load she is carrying, this doesn't turn out too well, as she lands standing at the edge of the plate, essentially setting off the devastating trap. The outer strips of floor suddenly spring upwards violently, smashing her into a patch of spikes positioned in the ceiling that was formerly covered by an illusion. 9 dam Drest and Euripides are thrust upwards as well, but they only graze the spikes for minimal damage since they were on their knees when the trap went off. 1 dam each The badly injured and now unconscious Valkrina is skewered upon the overhead spikes, but gravity eventually takes over. Her unmoving body falls from the spikes as the trap slowly resets itself, the springy floor sections slowly receding back to the floor level again. Her limp body crashes down and you notice that the central pit was also an illusion, reveling the only safe portion of the floor to be the center and not the trapped outer ledges.

The far door in the room creaks open slowly of its own accord, revealing another dark room beyond it. When the wounded Esquimaux is assessed, her skin looks a little pale, even more so than one who is about to die would normally look. Her wounds are patched up with what little supplies the group has remaining, the others taking comfort in the fact that she wont be setting off any more traps for a while. The ghostly female figure behind you sighs heavily when Val's condition is reported.

"When you are as rash as she is its eventually going to get you. Luckily it didn't nearly kill all of us."

Drest will check out the open door and see what is beyond.

"Dammit. We have to be careful." Akhilleus now joins the others, bringing some light with the torch. He takes a peek into the room, but he's sensible enough not to get any part of his body through the door.

Euripides Nereos

Hmm. I did not see that one coming. Looks like we'll need to be very cautious from now on. Let's keep those table legs. We should test everything now that we know there are illusions. He'll wait until the others have had a look before trying to see into the next room.
