Yar’s Trawler, the Crack in the Earth; 321D/81 (Morning)

The flying monstrosity continues to ’SCREECH!’ from inside the cover of the chasm’s clouds. Panicked, Yar reels in the harpoon and shouts out, “It’s wounded and is regenerating. Quickly, we must draw it out before it regains too much of its vitality.” He grabs some perforated hollow spheres out of a wooden crate and tosses one to each of you.

“Throw them overboard,” he commands. “They will whistle and attract the beast!” You heed Yar’s command and throw the 3-inch balls over the side of the vessel. They howl with slightly different pitches as they fall below the vessel.

The wounded creature returns into the open air and descends on the trawler. It loses the initiative, so your attacks land first.

Image

Two ’CRACKS’ report from Kurot’s rifle as he fires at the approaching insectillian. The bullets miss its body and pass, harmlessly, through its wing membranes.

Bruce lets off two pistol shots, but he slips while steadying his footing and the shots go wide.

Denslow focuses and generates a single explosive apple that he whips in an arc, impacting the head of the aberration. (7pt. dmg)

Farmanus switches to a longsword and swings, but misses, at one on the clawed tentacles.

MacMak takes careful aim and fires a bolt into the flying entity. The missile (CRIT, 6+11=17pt. dmg) enters the belly of the beast and grazes a vital organ!

Silvestri struggles with the organic muck covering his body. He does his best to shoot at the monster, but misses due to the ferocity of it bearing down on him!

The creature’s bony beak snaps into the psionist (DMG 11), ripping clothing and flesh from his shoulder! Tentacles graze Denslow and Bruce (DMG 1 ea.) and one slaps Yar (DMG 3) just before he fires the harpoon into the insectillian’s segmented body. The beast twists with shock and struggles against the tethered lance! Its wings ’BUZZZ’ and flap, pulling the harpoon cable pulled taut. The trawler experiences a mild lurch as the mutant monster bellows a wounded ’BLEEAT!’

OOC: The insectillian’s AC is 17.
Total damage inflicted = 118.

Yar’s Trawler, the Crack in the Earth; 321D/81 (Morning)

The insectillian is harpooned and tethered to the trawler! It pulls the cable taut but doesn’t have enough energy to move the floating vessel.

OOC: The insectillian is tethered and mortally wounded. +1d (or +4) to hit.

Using the mechanical advantage of the harpoon’s winch, Yar spins a large handwheel and slowly reels in the monstrous mutant animal. ”Continue to attack the beast!” Yar commands. ”Strike until it is dead, but don’t damage the beak!”

Image

The creature continues to ’BUZZ’ and ’BLEAT’ the entire time it is winched closer to the contraption. Its four clawed tentacles thrash about, but with clearly random movements.

Kurot fires a bullet directly into one of the entity’s eyes (16pt. dmg), careful to avoid the beak.

Bruce plugs two rounds (7+3=10pt. dmg) into the forward section of the aberration’s body!

MacMak aims to fire and trips on a deck board. He quickly recovers (Makes save), but loses a crossbow bolt that flies wild into the distant maelstrom.

Silvestri fights against the mucus envelope hampering his movement. He tries to fire a bullet into the beast’s body, but fumbles in the attempt. As he flounders, his pigmonn rifle slips out of his hand, rattles across the deck and stops short of going over the side! (I made a Luck check to see if it went overboard. He was lucky!)

The near-lifeless monstrosity reaches the edge of the trawler. Denslow tries to end its life with a swipe of his sveltlegk, but the handle hits a deck railing and glances to one side. Farmanus lunges and bellows a war cry, slashing down into its neck! (9pt. dmg) A final ’BLEAT’ gushes out of the creature’s toothed maw before the four wings cease to flap and its tentacles droop straight down. (DEAD)

Yar smiles at each of you and signals he’s going to winch the trawler back to the dock. After ten minutes, you tie the contraption securely to its mooring and reflect on the slaying of the chasm monster.

OOC: The insectillian’s AC is 17.
Total damage inflicted = 153.

Kurot runs a self-diagnostic damage assessment and searches the deck for spent rifle casings. He calculates that even with the cost of casings and repair parts, this should turn out to be a profitable expedition.

He fired five rifle rounds.

Farmanus

"Well done, comrades!" shouts Farmanus, exuberant following the battle. "I've never seen anything so big!"

He wipes his sword clean and looks at it admiringly. "A good sword needs a name. I killed a mighty beast with it here in the Crack of the Earth." Holding the weapon vertically above his head, "I dub thee Earthcracker!"

Silvestri clears the rest of the gunk of of himself and then calls upon his healing powers to mend some of his wounds before offering healing to Denslow, who seems to have taken the worst of the brunt from the creature.

"Great, comrades! Everyone is ok? Hope so."

Trawler Dock, the Crack in the Earth; 321D/81 (Mid Day)

Yar wraps several straps around the insectillian corpse and ties them, along with the harpoon lanyard, to a crane cable. Walking inside a large drum fastened to the side of the crane, Farmanus makes use of his physical prowess and powers the mechanism to winch and move the carcass from the trawler to the rock mooring platform. Bruce and Kurot help Yar wrestle and secure the corpse on the dock so butchering may begin. He hacks off the beast’s tentacles, wings and head.

“The monstrosity's meat is foul and cannot be used for food,” Yar states. “Please push it into the chasm.”

Image

Before sliding the remains off the edge of the dock, MacMak takes one of the claws from a tentacle. Yar cores the base of the head so he can reach in and pull out the skull organs. He piles them into a large steaming heap near the edge of the dock. Silvestri examines the brain of the beast and looks for any mutant irregularities. Denslow rustles his leaves and anxiously waits to leave for the comfort of direct sunlight.

Yar straps the beak, still attached to the head, to a sled that you must pull up the inclined passage to the surface. As you wait to leave, Yar produces six large coins worth 30gp reach and hands one to each of you.

“I’ll give you each 10 gold coins when we return to my workshop,” says the eccentric mechanic. “Then we will be settled in our business.”

It’s late afternoon by time you reach Hagalton and finish with Yar. You leave him occupied with cleaning the beak of the chasm catch. He dumps a sizzling liquid over the part and lets out a ’WOOP!’ with each pour.

OOC: Each character now has 40gp,

Denslow says to Yar, It was a pleasure. If you need other assistance, let us know.

Then to his companions: Should we see about this other task? Didn't it involve the mountains to the north?
