Diego kept scanning the open area to the right. Now and again he'd look to the far left to ensure nothing was coming from that direction, but then back to the right. He chuckled at some of the comments as they walked. It was a good group of guys that might make a great team.

"I heard it was the traps that get you first. Charge Charlie and fall into a pit with bamboo spikes shaved to a razor edge. They dip them in crap so if the spear don't kill you fast the infection will get you slow." He did a quick grinning glance back at the others. "My old man taught me how to use a shotgun, those are pretty good up close. Of course, nothing wrong with staying at mortar range either. We're the Cavalry, though, coming in to save someone else. Not sure how that's going to work but it probably beats walking for days to get there. Of course, if they put us in the wrong spot it'll be a long way back."

Glyndwr Evans

Still feeling very much out of place Glyndwr quietly follows along behind the other new arrivals, keeping to himself. Out of place is pretty much home for Glyndwr, as the son of an immigrant technician in a mountain mining town, but this is a new level. Basic had been his first trip off the mountain, and that was strange enough. Disappointing too, with the realisation that his marksmanship was actually pretty average with the rifle.

On the way to Gethsemane ( the name brings a wry smile, someone has a black humour ) Glyndwr finds himself drawn to the flight-line.

The helicopters fascinate him, this is the closest he has been to one in real life, although he has read all about them. The future of war. Training as a helicopter pilot might be a good route to take, Glyndwr thinks ruefully - a talent with the M60 is not the foundation of a career after all. Perhaps the training as a mining engineer his father forced him into will be useful, there must be some crossover in the understanding of calculating forces and handling machinery.

Reluctant to ask foolish questions of the crews Glyndwr walks along the runway, lagging behind the group as he examines the choppers and their armament.

The group hitch up packs and rifles and meander down the kilometer long runway sides. Behind you on the Western side are hangars and a building which seems to service as the main airport lounges. Ominously a large sign hangs skewed which reads 'Terminal'. To the South beyond the barbed fences are tree lined gardens and stone walled villas covered in blossoming ivy. In the far distance North and East stand green hills that perhaps rise several hundred meters in undulating terraces.

Left side Kelly and Glyndwr stroll by the line of choppers. There are four Huey UH-1's with half a dozen men lingering around them. At this distance you can see the glamour has gone from these 'fly boys'. One guy swills a bucket of water across an inside floor and mops out the blood stained liquid. Is that a finger that drops from the ledge? The next has a blackened interior that still wafts an acrid burnt smell. "Don't mean a thing, dude", responds a crewman to Kelly's wide eyed face.

Out of the third chopper steps a frantic man. He appears half crazed in contrast to his more relaxed or morose companions. "Guys are you the new search party? The rescue team eh? Say you just gotta be, we can't leave them alone on that hill? You gotta just go fetch my buddies?" His Huey has scores of bullet holes riddled in the flooring, glass shattered cockpit and chipped rotor blades."I gotta map. You need a map? They are making Custer's last stand man. The Alamo..."

Right side

Diego acts as point, fronting the line of new guys. Imagining the darkest jungle he hops between tripwire and traps to navigate safe passage. Rex, Cinead and James converse the merits of being in country. Behind LeRoy tests his knuckle ball which Cherrulo hits with ease across the runway for the other pair to throw back.

The group reach the fenced area noting indeed the sand bagged tower and machine gun emplacement. Under a bamboo canopy guards smoke watching pen and perimeter. Maybe a dozen men and women sit outside the hut in the grassy razor wired pen.

The huts have a various insignia nailed to them, intelligence corps and an ARVN counterpart. Behind you a jeep swiftly comes by, pulling up outside an office. A bespectacled officer ushers a huddle of Vietnamese men out of a doorway to clamber into the back seats. As they do, one dextrously extricates himself from his cuffs and solidly hits him to the floor taking his baton. This is the signal for the four others to make a run for it and they attempt to scatter. Two wrestle with the driver of the jeep, ramming his head into the dashboard and pushing him free of the seat.

The officer staggers, "You men. Seize those fellows! Don't let them escape!" pointing to you.

okay, this is a good opportunity to test out the Recon Hand to hand or unarmed combat rules. Describe your action and post the appropriate d100 roll and d10 damage.

I will try to cut and paste the combat rules for ease of viewing in a seperate thread.

Diego's blood boiled in an instant.

As shouldered his rifle Diego yelled to the two team members on the far left. "Kelly, Glyn! Here! Now!" Thirteen weeks of basic training and an explosion of righteous anger for the jeep driver carried Diego into the jeep where he took the driver's seat and grappled the escapees. "STOP!" Diego yelled in Vietnamese.

Grapple [1d100] = 4 vs 47

Goal is to get both bad guys focused on Diego so the driver can recover, and to control the vehicle's seat so they can't steal it. Since he never dropped his ruck he probably has a serious weight advantage.

Rex

Sees this unfold and it takes his lizard brain a moment to process. When he snaps to action, going after one of the runners, his tackle is just shy of the nimble viet cong.

Grapple vs 66 [1d100] = 86

Damn slippery son of a bitch!

Hearing Diego's shout and turning to see what is happening Glyndwr picks out one of the fleeing prisoners and sprints toward him, going for a flying tackle ( Glyndwr's father had always laughed at the padded and pampered American Football and insisted on teaching him Rugby - perhaps those Sunday afternoons learning a sport nobody played were not wasted after all ):

Grapple vs 82 [1d100] = 3

D10: [1d10] = 8

Kelly "Waves" English

No, dude. I don't know anything about that, man. We just got here. Nobody has told us what we're doing. If that ends up being our assignment then, yeah, great, I'll come back and get that map. I've been here 10 minutes- I really have no idea what's going on, but if I don't hurry, Lieutenant's gonna be mad. He tries to extricate himself from the conversation as he keeps moving toward Gethsemane.

James "Ferdinand" Morris: Sniper/Medic (HP: 47)
Action/Status: Tackling Vietnamese Detainees

Let the games begin! James thinks to himself with a wry smile, then drops his gear without a word, darts for the nearest escapee (not already being targeting by one of his squad mates, otherwise he will assist), in an attempt to grapple and detain.

Marco Cherrulo, favoured baseball bat in hand takes a swing at the nearest escapee. It happens to be the same one smashed by Cinead who almost decapitated the man's head.

Baseball bat (bayonet) vs 72 agility [1d100] = 49 damage [1d10] = 6

If the officer hoped this 'gook' would talk, he's going to be waiting a while as several bloody teeth decorate the jeeps bonnet. This is the 'baton' man.

Diego just barges into the pair who have tackled the jeep driver. His weight, pack and all, land on one guy and the pair get locked in a Grapple as his opponent unsuccessfully tries to Evade. The second gets coshed by Ezekiel, and stumbles in the jeep. As he Evades to run away James brings him down and they too entwine in a fierce but of wrestling.

Two of the escapees dash away, a futile hope for freedom. Rexlin misses his linebackers defensive tackle allowing his target to Evade. The guy continues to run down the grassy track by the runway towards the terminal. The second runner tacks across the runway and Glyndwr shows his command of full back duties, dropping his shoulder and side stepping to tackle arms around hips and thighs. The entangled escapee crashes to the deck banging his head on the tarmac. The pair are now locked in a Grapple.

"Do you see that guy? Why he looks like a real jack rabbit!" shout up the chopper crewmen as Glyndwr runs. They cheer as the tackle is made.

Kelly tries to Evade, the conversation with the stressed pilot. The pilot continues to harass you as you walk on, telling you of the swarm of VC hiding in the jungle using the besieged men as a lure to down the rescue choppers. "Hill 1244, out in the wild west of Dak To. They are coming over the border to get us man. When you go on patrol Joe and you hear them calling Joe, it will be my buddies."

The final chopper you pass on the way to Firebase Gethsemane has a pilot hand painting a 'Betty Boop' reclining cartoon figure on the side. "Lady Luck. We need all we can get," he says.

Next combat round, Diego, James and Glyndwr are in H2H combat of some form. State your action and roll please.

One escapee still runs away, you can try to chase him down Rex. The guy runs at 50 and is that distance away already so it might take three rounds to catch up (50, 100, 150, 200 'ft VC, Rex misses tackle, move rate 2nd round, 3rd, catch up on 4th round).

Cinead, Ezekiel and Cherrulo can join any H2H probably stroking more butts or heads with weapons. Kelly continue but not in combat.

thanks guys for prompt replies, hope to update again Sunday.

Diego was used to "big guy squashing little guy". In the first few weeks of each school year he had been the little guy. The big guys would call him half-breed and slap him as they sat on him. Diego wasn't a slapper, that was for girls. What he lacked in skill he made up for in "don't stop till you drop". The bullies eventually got the message; pick on him and risk your face.

Keeping the enemy pinned with his left hand and weight, Diego punched the man in the face. Just like old times...

Using the "Slash" equivalent of a controlled punch, only 1d10+5 and able to attack next round.
Attack [1d100] = 44 vs 47, Damage [1d10+5] = 1+5 = 6 Punch

Ezekiel Washington LeRoy

"Tough little critter ain't he. Guess he don't know when he's beat." he says about the gook who he hit and still tried to escape. With James attacking and wrestling the guy, Ezekiel waits for an opportune moment to launch another whack with the stock end of his assault rifle.

Ezekiel strokes his butt vs 68 agility [1d100] = 39 damage [1d10] = 6

(are there rules for dual melee in H2H and what if I miss, would I strike a team member by mistake?)

James "Ferdinand" Morris: Sniper/Medic (HP: 47)
Action/Status: Grappling with one of Them

Cease and desist you squirmy little Rat! James orders the Viet Cong soldier. “Cinead, Ezekiel, Cherrulo, one of you want to come instruct this fella on the finer art of keeping still?!” James calls out while holding the squirmer in place. “These little guys are fighters aren’t they?! Hold still you little Cong! James tries to dig in and crush the little man into the dirt. This feels like gradeschool, Ha! James thinks to himself, cept I was the one being pinned down. Not anymore little man!

Assuming a successful Grapple, I should have him pinned for ST Combat Rounds (ST=47) according to the rules (pg 30)?

Otherwise:

Nice work, dude. Boop-boop-a-doop, baby. He compliments the pilot on his artwork as he continues toward Firebase Gethsemane.

Glyndwr Evans

Glad to actually be doing something useful at last and bouyed by the success of the tackle and the cheer that greeted it , Glyndwr grins as he concentrates on pinning the struggling figure.

You're caught boyo, just hold still now.

Calling out to the onlookers:

You all care to get a muzzle and leash on this dog for me? It needs taking to the pound.

The melee outside the intelligence huts continues as the escapees try to make a break for freedom.

Marco Cherrullo swings as if hitting past outfield, Baseball bat (bayonet) vs 72 agility [1d100] = 46 damage [1d10] = 3, he connects with a slice and combined with the bludgeoning of Cinead, the wriggling of the captive ceases, beaten unconscious. Together they drag him back to the hut.

Despite James tying his opponent in knots, arms behind back and on the floor, Ezekiel hammers down another strike with his rifle stock. It quickly brings the man to his senses and he realises he is caught like a fish on a line, limply he is forced to surrender or risk further beating. He is also escorted back to the hut. I will treat a totally pinned character as semi-unconscious and add additional damage

The slippery escapee caught by the flying lunge of Glyndwr also failed in attempts to evade the tackle and is held to the floor. A ruck forms over his body as the crewmen walk over and give him a good kicking, perhaps venting some fury for their choppers being attacked. He is dragged across the runway, leaving a bloody trail behind.

Diego having barged into the man in the drivers seat, he proceeds to launch a flurry of blows, a neat left hook to the jaw. The man staggers back but energised by fighting for his life and freedom decides to go down fighting and high kicks at the young trooper. VC escapee stabs at Diego [1d100] = 26[1d10+10] = 3+10 = 13 -13hp strength Diego. He takes an immediate defensive stance to correct his off balance thrust and defends himself from the 'incoming' blows from the squad. Diego, roll your next two attacks, this man looks to fight it out.

Rex ditches his encumbering pack to charge down the runway after the fleeing VC. As you are about to launch your attack the runner senses your presence and turns to launch an attack, a dodge and elbow chop miss their mark. Rex, give me 3 attacks, one for this round and the next two. This runner looks to continue to parry, evade or run away.

VC escapee Riposte vs Rex [1d100] = 80 damage [1d10] = 7

Kelly ignores the commotion and the chopper crews to their devices. "Hang loose, Man. we'll come get you if you need." says the painter. He chucks you a can of beer, "From Betty with luck." At the end of the runway, a small barricade and sandbagged emplacement stands. Passing through that and off to the north are several olive drab tents and wooden huts. A line of trenches lead to a group of scattered howizters which nest dug in along the ridge of a small embankment. An officers quarters and command post is signposted and you arrive at your destination. Lieutenant Brubaker is absent temporarily but various gathering of 'grunts' are about. A group playing cards in a mortar pit, a pair of guys lean on a desk in a side tent, listening with headphones to a loud female voice from a transistor radio. She sings in the local language. A third group are unloading supply crates from a weathered and shot up truck. Kelly pick a group or do an action while the team catch up. You may gain some knowledge or rumour from a group.

okay so the melee should end soon by overwhelming numbers but I want to still test the system. So Rex has some H2H vs escapee until others catch up and Diego has a round on his own H2H before others can join in. Glyndwr, Ezekiel, Cinead & James can decide to run to help Rex (roll one attack) or assist Diego (roll two attacks). Kelly speak to a group of grunts. (or enjoy your beer!).

Diego is used to this. His second punch to the guy's head smashes in. However, his ruck and rifle shift and throw off his second punch.

14 more damage, total 20.

To Hit [1d100] = 42 vs 47. Damage [1d10+5] = 9+5 = 14

To Hit [1d100] = 82 vs 47. Damage [1d10+5] = 9+5 = 14
