Hargrem

Fueled by the power of Tymora, Hargrem rushed headlong into the battle. With his shield held high, he moved with the quickness and agility that was akin to a man twenty years his junior. Strike after strike from the bugbear and the rats fell harmlessly against the holy man's shield.

At his next opening, he called for the power of his diety in a hope to bring down the sacred power down upon the bugbear. "Burn in the holy fire, you beast," he yelled at Balsag. Then, he moved the shuriken again to strike, hopefully the killing blow.

Sky

As fire rains down on the group, Sky reloads. "Barbecue it is, then." Sky fires another bolt at the wounded Fang.

Kelben calls out "You might want to duck." as he fires another arrow at the bugbear.

Qelgrax Klilxuac

Feeling chaotic magic swirling around him, the sorcerer channels the chaos into the bolt of fire he launches at the bugbear.

Round 2
"Burn in the holy fire, you beast," Hargrem yells as he calls upon the power of Tymora; producing a flame-like radiance to crash down in Balsag's direction. The bugbear, however, seems refocused and manages to barely dive out of harms way... and smirks at the divine caster. Then, sensing the buzzing flight of the shuriken, the monstrosity bashes it aside with his shield. "Your little toy can't hurt me know," he snarls, switching to a deep, crude common tongue.

"But I --" he continues as he brings back his morning star, "-- can hurt you!" he taunts as he sends his morning star wildly crashing down in Hargrem's direction. The beast stares angrily as he witnesses his powerful strike fail to connect.

Sky, amused by the raining fire, quips about barbecue while she reloads her crossbow and sinks another bolt into Fang, killing the oversized rodent with a deadly shot. The second giant rat, Grip, circles around behind Hargrem and lunges at the cleric with a mouth full of teeth -- which, again, fail to penetrate the holy man's metal armor.

Klilxuac, feeling chaotic magic swirling around him, channels the chaos into a bolt of fire which he launches at the bugbear. Aided by his masterful manipulate the forces, the sorcerer's mote of fire strikes Balsag square in its ugly face, causing more than enough lethal damage to end the threat... unless errant arrows fired by Kelben count as potentially harmful, as the gnome calls for friendlies in the general area of his target to duck.

Seeing the significant threat eliminated, Erky rushes at Grip and attempts to plunge his dagger deep into the rats hide, but is unable to muster up the strength.

Sky

Her ears perk up as she senses that the rat is about to flee. Her tail starts twitching and she flexes her paws a few times. She is halfway down into a crouch when she suddenly shakes her head and stands back up.

"Where was I? Right. Civilized hunting." She pulls her rapier and moves to impale the tasty treat.

Hargrem

The cleric grumbled as the shuriken failed to connect, but then, as luck would have it, magical bolts put an end to Balrag's life. Hargrem turned his attention to the last remaining foe - the rat. He sent his holy fire down upon the rat as well, and then moved the shuriken in an attempt to impale the vile little beast.

Apologies for the delay, guys. Your DM is an arse.

I ended up bookending the Thanksgiving holiday with some vacation days, and apparently I'm not in the habit of initiating updates on off days (something I'll need to get better about). The "good" news is that I don't have any more vacation days until 12/20 and 12/21, leading into the Christmas holiday, so hopefully things will keep moving more regularly again until then.

Round 3
Grip, the remaining rat, quickly scurries out of the path of the flame-like radiance that is Hargrem's 'Sacred Flame' casting, but the cleric's hovering shuriken embeds itself into the vermin's tiny skull, killing it instantly.

The morning star carried by Balsag now lies just outside his outstretched hand, with his wooden shield still strapped to his other forearm. Aside from the antler crown and stinky armor, the bugbear does not appear to have any other possessions on his person. Nor do the rats.

The group finds in the damp and chilly room, sparsely illuminated by luminescent fungus clinging to the walls and ceiling of this wide cavern.

A layer of earth, mixed with rotting vegetation and the remains of cave animals, covers the floor. Wooden hoes, previously used by the skeletons in their farming efforts, rest in these garden patches.

There is the open passage leading to an unexplored area beyond, from which Balsag and the rats emerged, and there are two doors leading from this current cavern.

Hargrem

The battle was quick and ferocious. Tymora was shining on them this day, and that made the cleric quite happy. With a flick of his wrist, he dismissed the floating shuriken hoping that we would call on it soon. It proved to be a worthy ally. With all the foes laying dead at their feet, Hargrem looked at the others. "I need to rest before we press on. I suggest we move into this one's cave and hunker down for a bit. Maybe we should move these bodies in case any mad druid comes through here."

Sky

Sky sheathes her rapier and bends down to pick up the antlered helmet. Trying in on she asks, "How does it look?" She then continues in a gruff voice: "Time to meet the cook pot." She winks at Erby.

"Ok. A rest it is. Into the cave." She grabs hold of one of the rats and starts dragging it north into the cave.

Great Hunter’s Abode
Seeking a secure location to rest, the group elects to head into the cave area from which Balsag and his rats emerged. "Time to meet the cook pot," Sky says in a gruff voice, winking at Erby, adjusting the crown of antlers she claimed. The bard grabs hold of one of the rats and starts dragging it north into the cave after the others.

The floor of this rough cavern is stained, and smells of blood and animal musk. On the far side of the cavern, what was once a crude tunnel leading away from this area has long since been caved-in and is completely impassable.

Light from glowing fungus reveals two niches along the right hand wall.

The closest naturally carved out area contains two large rat nests made of hair, dry fungus, and refuse.

The next area holds a large "bed" made of a pallet covered by matted furs. Next to this bed is wide wooden board, serving as a weapons rack, on which the following assortment of weapons are affixed -- two spears, six javelins, one longsword, one greatsword. Also in this little carved out area, set somewhat distant away from the bed, is the "cook pot." An iron pot, large enough to hold a goblin-sized creature, is currently filled with an orangish or tan, chunky liquid, with visible bits and pieces floating about it. A few scraps of an unknown meat remain on a large spit that has been constructed next to this pot. The lack of any burning smell or any glowing embers from the fire beneath the pot suggests that it has not been lit yet today.
Great Hunter’s Abode.jpg
Great Hunter’s Abode.jpg (98.39 KiB) Viewed 1437 times

The area reeks and a prolonged stay will be unpleasant, but without other exits, you believe the area will be secured if the open area that leading into the cavern is blocked off, which could be accomplished with some effort using the rocks from the caved-in area.

---

So, what is the plan here, guys? Short rest, or do you want to attempt a long rest? Anything else?

New Morning
The group somehow manages to sleep through the night, with the most dangerous thing they were forced to deal with are the pungent smells coming from within.

Rising early, everyone collects their possessions and makes for the only exit -- the tunnel through which they originally entered. After a short time the group is able to clear their path, and they find themselves in the entry room to the Grove area, with the shaft leading back up to the citadel in the far corner:
Doors.jpg
Doors.jpg (147.71 KiB) Viewed 1397 times
There are two unexplored doors in the room. The first, nearest to your current position, is made of solid wood with a handle, which appears to pull open. It does not appear to be locked.

The other door, also wooden with unlocked handle, is straight ahead on the opposite side of the chamber.

No obvious noises are heard coming from beyond either door, but you believe you do hear an occasion hint of movement beyond the first door just to your left.

---

Notes:
  • Everyone is back to full health and with a full compliment of abilities, features, and spells (except for Scott, since I'm assuming Klilxuac will use one 1st level spell slot to re-cast 'Mage Armor').
  • If you cast spells (everyone except Ed), I am keeping your list of prepared spells the same. You have until the first encounter to tell me otherwise.

Sky

After a lovely night's sleep, Sky is ready to continue and get out of this hole. She motions to the closest door to the left. "What do you think? At least something is behind it."

Sky creeps over to the door and tries to listen at it.

Listening at the Door
Sky presses her ear against the door and, after studying the sounds coming from beyond, strongly suspects that she hears movement on the other side. Casual, unhurried movement. She can tell there are multiple sources of sound -- more than one; less than a dozen.

It's strange, but she also thinks she hears a methodic squishing sound.
