Greff

"I do hope it is a dragon up there and not the risen dead I can't stomach the stench of rot...." The ranger scratches under his wet beard while staring at the cave.

Galanthas

"Maybe one of us should stay by the entrance mounting guard, just in case whatever lives there is not home and comes back. A whistle or something should be enough to give the alarm...
Maybe Ren or Stumpy, since I don't know if either of them can see in the dark. But if you want to go in there, I'm all in."
He days, studying the cave mouth and the rock wall in front of them.

Wes

"Well, let's check out the cave then. Maybe we"ll find some kind of clues before we go inside. Those flags, or whatever they are, and the shiny thing are obviously something to do with it. Greff, do you want to lead the way and see if there's any tracks as we get closer?"

As they walk towards the cliff, Wes tries to stay aware of anything that might be approaching them from the jungle.

In Search Of Dragons!
The Cave
Sunday, 7th of Goodmonth
Mid Morning, Hot, Sunny, Humid, Buggy

The 5 hunters decide to have a closer look at this dark cave in the cliff walls. They sneak forward slowly, walking the long expanse of sand that leads up to the cliffs. They keep close to the tree line of the jungle, while Wes keeps a sharp eye out for intruders. He asks Greff to take point so he can watch for any tracks as they approach.

This entire area is void of any animal life at all, giving the ranger and druid a bit of a creepy feeling as they draw nearer. Nobody spots anything living nearby, and even the usual noises of the jungle are much quieter here. The old set of human boot prints appears to lead right up to the cave entrance. The group trudges through the deep sand here, with no nice hard packed trail to use like there is on the other side of the river.

Getting close enough to see things a little better, the party can now spot the accoutrements that adorn the cave mouth. There are brightly colored scraps of clothing tied off to the roots and rocks that jut out naturally from the cliff face around the cave mouth. There is a metallic collage of some kind, possibly a wind chime type of decoration or a large fishing lure, mounted on the wall above the cave. This is what the group saw glinting in the sun from a distance.

If this is the cave of a dragon, it would have to be a pretty small one to access an entrance of this size. A single blue crab scuttles across the rocky cliff face above the cave mouth. It is the first sign you see of anything living in this area. A light clinking of chain links can barely be heard over the crashing waves from the sea. That noise is coming from beyond the side of an outcropping in the cliff, just past the cave mouth.

Wes

Wes holds up his hand to halt the group. After taking stock of the situation, he whispers quietly to them. "It's not the wind that's making those chains rattle. There's something there."

"We need to get close to the cave mouth so we can see what's inside. We can't just walk by it to investigate those chains. Something might jump out at us. Since I can see in the dark, I'll creep closer and look inside."

"Perhaps two of you can stay close to me in case anything attacks and two of you can keep your bows pointed at that corner, in case whatever is rattling those chains comes around".

Galanthas

"I can come with you as I can see in the dark as well... I can lend you my bow and arrows if anyone needs them." If that's the case, Galanthas does it. In any case he will unsheathe his long sword and tread carefully next to Wes.

"I'm not able to see in the dark but I could come you and cover the entrance out here in the light, unless one of you two would like the honor? he turns toward Ren and Stumpy.

Ren and Stumpy just shrug at Greff’s offer. Ren Replies. “We humans gotta stick together, eh mate?” They bring up the rear as the party moves forward.

Peering into the dark cave, Wes and Galanthas see areas where sunlight pours in through the ceiling of the passage beyond, upsetting their dark vision. The tunnel moves on and turns further in, but they are able to spot water splashing up from the floor in a few places, and the smell of salty seawater mixed with rotting vegetation is prevalent.

The clinking chain noise is much louder here, and now you think you might here some soft whimpering over the noise of the crashing waves nearby. From the back of the group, Stumpy looks at Ren and speaks up for the very first time outside of combat.

“HEY REN! WATCHA THINK THIS PLACE IS ALL ABOUT?”

Ren looks back at him in anger and holds his finger up to his lips.

Then, from the area of the clinking chains comes a weak cry for help.

“Stump? *Cough* Ren? *Cough, cough* Is that you guys?”

Wes

The druid looks at Ren and Stumpy in surprise. He half-speaks, half-mouths the words, "Do you know who that is?"

Stumpy does not reply, but Ren gets a confused look on his face after hearing his name.

He shrugs at the druid and begins moving forward, towards the hidden voice around the unseen corner.

Wes

Wes asks Ren, "Did your group ever cross the river? Why would someone be here?"

Wes pulls a small silver mirror from his belt pouch and passes it to Ren. "Here, use this to take a look. Be careful".

Galanthas

The elf is relieved when he sees his companions being more careful than Ren. But as Wes gives him the mirror he grinds his teeth and holds his long sword firmly trying not to look directly into whatever is bound with those chains.

He mutters "Ren, do you need a light source? I don't like the look of this..."

Ren shakes his head at Wes before he peers over his shoulder at Galanthas, then looks up at the mid-morning sun. "Ummmmm......no?" is all he says in reply to the elf's question. The fighter takes the mirror from Wes and sticks his hand around the corner of the outcropping in the cliff wall. A loud gasp is heard from the human once he takes a look into the mirror.

From the back of the group, Stumpy calls out to his friend. "WELL......WHATTA YA SEE, REN?"

Before anyone can stop him, Ren rushes around the corner towards whomever it was that called out to him.

I just remembered that those footprints did lead here. I thought they went further up the beach. Maybe it is somebody they know.
Wes

Intrigued by Ren's reaction, Wes moves to a position where he can see whoever is chained up, but can also still see the mouth of the cave.

Galanthas just stays at the ready, suspecting that something is not right here and finding Ren's attitude pretty strange. He tries to make his concern noticeable to his other companions by looking at them in turn.

Once Greff and Stumpy follow along behind Ren, they see something really strange.

There is a human male chained to the cliff wall by rusty iron shackles attached to old ship chains. The man is completely naked and looks barely alive. His eyes have some kind of clam shells covering them. The shells are adhered to the mans face by some gruesome looking greenish yellow slimy glue-like substance that smells horrible.

What is even worse, there are several rows of small pocks and alcoves in the face of the cliff walls behind the chained man. These alcoves are all filled with severed heads from all manner of creatures. Some of the heads look like they have been there a very long time, nothing more than white skulls, really. But others are far more fresh, for dead heads anyway. There are heads from creatures of the land and from the sea. Some are easy to identify, kobold, ogre, sahuagin, etc., but some of the others are so strange looking that you have no idea what monster they may have originated from. The closed eyes of the dozens of severed heads greet you in a macabre chorus of dead silence.

The chained man speaks weakly once more of the group approaches. "Ren? Is that really you? I cant see! Can you help get me out of here? She will be back soon, so you have to hurry!!!"

When Stumpy rounds the corner, he also recognizes the chained man.

"HOLY SHIT! STEVE? IS THAT REALLY YOU, MATE? WE THOUGHT YOU WERE LONG DEAD! OR WORSE!"

Ren frantically tugs at the chains to see if they can be broken or pulled out of the wall. Wes and Ganthalas don't see any change as they watch the inside of the cave passage.

Wes

"Does anybody have any wine?" asks Wes. "It might dissolve that stuff on his face".

Wes looks into the cave again. It seems logical that whatever impisoned Steve must live in that cave. He wonders if the holes in the floor giving access to the sea are there by chance, or if they are some clue as to the type of creature that lives there. Does it live in the sea and emerge onto the land?
