Zeromancer wrote:Yeah, in a modern era/real(ish) world game like this, I tend to play characters that have a skill set similar to my own. Computer mumbo jumbo, outdoors survival skills, general brainiac (not the Superman villain)... It's generally easier to write what you know, as they say. Still, I did have an idea to play the great grandson of a firefighter who actually had been assigned to the original Ghostbusters HQ before it became their HQ. Thought it might be fun to have a link to the past, but not specifically related to a character. On that note, will this team be making use of the firehouse or have their own lair?
Awesome points to bring up! I love the indirect connection! That is a cool easter egg I can try to work in later on.

As far as the firehouse, Yes, you will have your own place. Firehouse 0 is the original one in New York where the movies et al took place. I am placing this story in Fort Smith, AR because 1) I am familiar with the area and can give you some great goodies to work with while leaving an air of mystery since I am thinking of having you as recent "Transfers" to the department if that is okay with everyone. Perhaps you all recently graduated from GBU. So you will be in Fort Smith Firehouse "Old Fort" #316. I am going t try to put the lore drop for present day tonight, which will help with character development I think.

The good news is that as of today I have the entire first campaign written out! So once I have this looking pretty and char gen worked out so everyone is happy, we will get started. :)

Zeromancer wrote:Oh, is this story not going to be based out of New York City? That's cool and all, but being from NYC originally, I was looking forward to writing a native New Yorker in his natural environment. :P

Edit: I actually found that I already had some PDFs of WEG's GB rules. There's one that's simply called the Training Manual. That one's pretty bare bones and carries a 1986 copyright. There's another one called Ghostbusters International which displays the Ghostbusters 2 logo on its cover and has a 1989 copyright date. This one also lists its contributors, and it's fantastic. :D Sandy Petersen and Lynn Willis (RIP) of Chaosium, designers of many editions of Call of Cthulhu, and Bill Slavicsek whom I recognize from his work on the Dark Sun Campaign Setting for TSR. There are others, but those names immediately stood out for me.
I wanted to clearify, though we are not starting in NY, You all would have went to "Basic Training" there at Ghostbuster University which is to Ghostbusters kind of what Westpoint would be to Military officers.

This also doesnt mean you wont find yourselves in NY or other places as well. It is just a jumping off point to give you all your own HQ and establish your own history first.

Yeah, same here, lol. If I do create that great grandson of the New York firefighter, I can't think of a reason why he'd go to the deep south unless he was forced or otherwise coerced. Maybe he lost a bet, lol. I was thinking of giving him the Playing Poker talent... :P

I see nothing here but wonderful plot hooks ;)

Yeah, that's probably true, I'm just having some deja vu here. :P The first Call of Cthulhu game I got into that lasted more than a month or two is set in an area other than the default. The Keeper is running pre-written scenarios, but he moved them from Arkham Massachusetts to Houston Texas. Some of the characters are from the Arkham area, but I was the dummy who decided to play a local, lol. Not doing that this time... haha. Makes it much harder.

I am willing to listen to ideas for story and lore. It was a thought I had, but I am not married to it. I want my players happy and to feel like they can own the story as much as I do. Heck the whole Brownie Points system revolves around it already anyway.

I will be posted a character sheet here for Julia, the secretary at your firehouse. This show in general how I recommend setting up your sheet as far as stats are concerned. It is pretty simple and only takes a moment.

As I said earlier this week to Ed, if you are unsure how you wanna play off your skills, you can start off with a 3 in each of the 4 traits until you get used to the game, and I will allow you to make a 1 time only adjustment where you switch around the numbers as you want them. We can call it your character getting past his training period; however, once we get to the main story for the campaign, you will need to lock in those stats. The good thing about having all 3s is that you are a balanced character that is a jack of all trade and master of none, so it might be a good place to start off. :)

I'd like to have us up and running by say Monday, all things real life pending. Thoughts?

Hope it's under warranty....

Besides I don't own a trans am Brett. I got a Nissan Altima. ;)

Just out of curiosity, Wolfy, do you have any concepts for your GB yet?

I am thinking likely a jack of all trades type semi brainy but not Egon by any means. Definitely can have his moments, snarky, sarcastic humor likes to joke around.

Gotcha. I'm kind of torn between two ideas right now. Part of me wants to play a semi-brainy occultist, kinda like Ray was, while I also have some interest in a tough guy mechanic with a weakness for gambling.

I'll work on my character tomorrow, so I should be ready to go for Monday. I'm thinking an ex-football player who had an encounter with a ghost and decided to become a Ghostbuster as a result. Definitely a more physical than brainy character.

Nice ideas. I had some similar thoughts but have settled on a former college-level gymnast with few social skills. Perhaps a former municipal sewer worker. So... Some sort of specialty for working in dark, cramped environments? Bluehorse, what would that be called?

Edit: fwiw, I was thinking of making him a Latino, but feel it would come across flat. Or worse, disrespectful. So I'll table that idea for now. :(
