Samdarag
With the number of volunteers, it only takes a few minutes to free the cart and get it readied back on the path. "Much obliged, much obliged," Samdarag repeats, extremely thankful for the assistance. "I was having the darndest time trying to free her myself," he shares.
To the many queries from Nexus, Samdarag merely chuckles. "Is not food, my diminutive friend. I am Samdarag, purveyor of magical paraphernalia, material necessities, and related items to many wizards of note," he says rather pompously in what seems a practiced response. "See, I am to deliver a chest of material components to the wizard Helmaer, who lives in Westbridge, just north of Red Larch. My normal courier has just left me for a better paying job with another company -- the greedy arseholes -- and I find myself in a bit if a situation."
"Now, I know you said no reward, but, truth be told, you'd really be doing me another favor by accepting this opportunity I mentioned, and transporting this chest to Helmaer for me," he says, patting one of the larger chests in his cart. "Nothing terribly expensive or important, but Helmaer gets very huffy if I'm even a day late," Samdarag admits.
"If I could tempt you to assist me again, this time it would be a formal business arrangment, with terms... and compensation, of course."

Of course, I will want a formal contract drawn up that lays out the terms, with all of your signatures on it, witnessed at the temple in Red Larch," he starts.

Nexus stands suddenly taller, his ears pricking up at the sound of material components for spells! ”Magic you say? What type of wizard is this chap? Do you think he would teach us some magic if we help transport his magical paraphernalia? Is he a kind man? I am interested in this deal sir. How much up front? “

Roderick's genial smile fades slightly at Samdarag's offer. Helping a man stuck on the road is a classic good deed, an exercise of compassion. Accepting a courier job is just business, and that's not what Roderick signed up for when he joined the Avatars. Besides, some of this business doesn't quite smell right, like the complicated arrangement for payment after approval by a customer who gets "huffy" if deliveries are delayed. Roderick is no businessman, but he wonders if other couriers would accept such terms. Perhaps that's why Samdarag's previous courier really left.
His smile turns indulgent, as if he is about to explain something to a child. But not so much that it is insulting. "One does not hire an Avatar of St. Garriott," he explains gently. "If the cause is just and the need is true, we serve gladly without payment. If it is not, the wealth of the world cannot buy an Avatar."
"I will accompany you as far as Red Larch," he says. "After that, we shall see. While we walk, tell me more about Helmaer. What kind of magician is he? Is he a good man? Does he use his powers in the service of others, or himself?"

Samdarag makes no effort to conceal his sigh after the initial wave of agreement is met with some dissent. "It's really not all that complicated of an arrangement; it's quite standard, really. For an agreed upon sum, you deliver the requested materials. Once they arrive, you get paid. Naturally, there are a few safeguards put in place for everyone's benefit."
"Once upon a time, Helmaer was quite powerful, but I'm fairly certain he is "retired" now. I guess one cannot truly retire from urge or need to satisfy the calling from their arcane gifts, even if they no longer seek out situations to put those talents to use." The man issues a deep belly laugh. "In truth, I care not why he continues to stockpile these components; it's none of my concern -- but, he is one of my most steady customers, so I'm thankful for his continued interests."
"Perhaps he could be a valuable resource to you, no?" he says, turning to Alara, and Nexus, watching the later as the gnome does his best to "inspect" the contents of the cart, which rises almost to his eye level. Tearing his eyes away from the curious illusionist, he continues. "I've been the purveyor of his requests for many, many years now, and never has a courier had an issue being paid. If anything, he will negotiate with me for reduced rates on future orders."
"I will admit, I am well-traveled in these parts and I'm not familiar with the order of Avatar's of which you speak," Samdarag says, turning to Roderick. "Tell me about them on our travels, yes?" I will add, though, that it seems the rest of your group is more than willing to receive proper compensation for performing a service to a man in need, and if doing a favor to a fellow man is not adequate, perhaps your cause could be providing escort and protection to your companions?"
Without waiting for a response, he grabs hold of handles on his newly righted cart and begins walking. "Time waits for no man."

Roderick offers a friendly smile full of perfect white teeth. His cheeks dimple. If he is annoyed by Samdarag's presumption to lecture him on the suitability of causes, it does not show on his face. "My companions are not Avatars of St. Garriott," he explains as he walks. "We Avatars have sworn our lives to the service of the Eight Virtues of Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Honor, Sacrifice, Spirituality, and Humility. Where the cause is Just, Honor compels us to serve with Valor and Humility. We do so without asking for payment or accepting it, for such is Sacrifice. When the cause is not Just, payment will not make it so. The Avatar walks quietly for a while. The weather is good, and all is relatively calm, for the moment. It is an enjoyable walk. Still, he keeps an eye out for threats.
"Tell me more of Helmaer," he says eventually. "Surely you must know something of him? Any good merchant knows his customer better than the customer knows himself, yes?"

Delgrot chides Roderick "Eh quit bein' so uptight Roderick. Ain't helpin' others in yer code?" he chuckles a little at the paladin. "After all I'm a priest of Marthammor Duin and I'm offering' to aid in somethin' more befittin' to a courier." he gives a little smile and a wink to Roderick. "Don't mind him Samdarag sometimes I think his armor's too tight."
