Well you'll get a chance to find all that out when the game starts! :)

As new PCs it's assumed that you're all new in town, so you only know that the Caliph rules the city as a high priest, and that each neighbourhood is ruled by one of the powerful guilds. You can fill your spare time with trying to find odd jobs in the city, but if you want to get anywhere in El-Shahabi beyond catching rats or being a lowly mercenary, you'll need to get in with one of the guilds, or into the Caliph's court.

Okay folks, we're nearing the end here (or is that the beginning?)!

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what to expect during the first few weeks of the game, since we'll be mixing the weekly 'strategy posts' with open role-playing. So bear with me, and if you have any ideas, please air them out here.

As a starting point I'm basically trying to copy Keehnelf's massive Westmarches campaign By the way, if you're not in that game, you should be! Take it from me, it's the most fun I've had role-playing in years, and one of my top 5 RPG campaign experiences ever.

This is how I think we'll do things to start:
  1. Any long-term actions you're taking (doing hard labor to make ends meet, looking for recruits, staking out a house in the merchant ward to rob, etc.), those will go in the Strategy Actions thread. If you really don't want your actions to be broadcast to everyone else, then you can just PM them to me instead.
  2. Any short-term actions (like conversations, wandering the market to see if you can find an item for sale, etc.), you can do at any time in whatever thread is most appropriate, assuming your character is actually there. So no shopping in El-Shahabi at the same time that you're supposed to be out raiding a village.
I'm sure we'll fine-tune that as we go along. But for now, does all that sound reasonable?

I'll try to get that up this weekend, along with a roster of the basic races and their combat statistics.

The mount rules are kind of scattered throughout the original booklets, so it's pretty difficult piecing together exactly what mounted figures can do. When I post I'll comb through the rules and try putting all of the rules for mounts in a single post.

The stat blocks for the standard civilized races, and the stat blocks and rules for mounts/chariots are now up in the FAQ:

Combat and battles
Combat stats: civilized races
Combat rules and stats: mounts and chariots

That's a good question. Basically: the lizards are all big in first edition. Great big, scary things.

In the late '70s and early '80s it was pretty popular for companies to make fantasy miniatures riding huge reptiles. Here's one I just recently started to paint up:

Image

Because a lot of companies made figures like this, the original Warhammer rules have a generic rule for Giant Reptile Mounts, which are the rules the 'Cold Ones' use in the Forces of Fantasy creature list. The later concept of what a Cold One actually was, or even what a Night Elf was, hadn't really been become a thing yet. I don't think it was even until 1987 that they even made their own lizard mount models! They just assumed that you'd buy one from another company, or make it yourself with a plastic toy or something.

Anyway, that's what I really like about 1e Warhammer. There's no strict setting. It's just a toolkit for playing battles and RPG adventures with all the wacky fantasy models that were being made by different companies at the time. Elves riding giant lizards, hill giants riding elephants, cavemen with fish heads—those were all models people made back then, and Warhammer was designed so that you could have a game to play with them.

I blame the Jurassic Park movies and Turok for the change to raptors. :D

Alright, folks! I think we're now live.

If you have anything in your character sheet to figure out (like purchasing soldiers or servants, if you plan on starting with any), then we can still figure that out during the first four weeks of game time.

FYI: Now that the game's up and running, a couple of players have gotten busy in real life. Rather than waiting for everyone to either become available or bow out, we're just going to go ahead and start, and anyone who wants to jump in at a later date can do so at their convenience.

lordfalco is in, and I believe LordVyktor will trying to jump in as well. Everyone else is welcome to jump in whenever they can, of course, but don't feel like you have to rush it if you've got too much on your hands.

I'll PM the players to make sure everyone gets the message.

We've wrapped up the events for Week 2, so everyone can go ahead and put in your actions for September Week 3.

Yeah, I kind of like how you guys went straight for doing sneaky things, as it gives me the opportunity to try and write rumors and hints, some of which may or may not actually have anything to do with what the PCs are actually doing.

It's a challenge, but fun. :)
