5e would be my preference. Easier to use than 4e with very few actual rules changes. If you have the 4e stuff we could work something out.

I can see this going one of two ways:

If we get six or more, and there is interest in doing something quasi-PVP, I would set up one medium sized hex map of a region. Two covenants will then be added, not knowing where the other is. My thought would be that the game would be slightly asymmetrical, with one covenant set up by magi of the order and one covenant of non-order magi. The order covenant would have access to more resources at the start but the non-order group would have the benefit of secrecy. The order group could decide their goal is eradication of the rebels, but it could also be to bring them into the order if their crimes aren't too great (diabolism, etc.).

If there's a right-sized group for a single covenant, I would like to do a freshly-founded covenant with basically zero infrastructure to start, and the PCs would be the only magi there. For lots of new players, it gives a good starting scale and LOTS of concrete early objectives in addition to the inevitable external plot hooks. It's also a much sandboxier way to start for new folks in my opinion.

I've requested a forum--I'll start putting materials together and folks can jump in, ask questions, etc. with no rush toward getting started. We'll add more as folks express interest.

Sure thing--the first thread I'll put up is "Rules Questions" in recognition that a lot of folks won't have played it before. :)

I dont know if it has been mentioned...
but there was an ars magica game attempted here a couple years ago.

There might be some information you can pick from it for examples, etc.

I attempted to learn it, but found it rather confusing...But please dont let that discourage anyone...

Thanks! some things about it can be confusing--the key is just not to dump everything on new players at once, and introduce them to one system at a time.

The forum is now up here:

I will send out some invites and get a Rules Questions thread set up ASAP.

No need to lurk! Get up to speed at your own pace and ask lots of questions!

Since we will be wizards. Do you have a cap on our level of years as a wizard since that will greatly impact our Exp for character creation I assume a single year? But than again I have no idea what your plan is.

Right out of gauntlet, so 0 years as a magus beyond base character creation.

I've got five for this game at the moment--though we're not launching hard and fast, I'm going to close recruitment for now and if anyone wants to join the waiting list, new players will eventually be added as apprentices for the existing Magi (and of course bring new Companions along with them).

I think we lost one or two--I'm hoping to start on June 1...do you think you could get started with character creation ASAP to get in the game?
