Here are a few options that are still open, if you feel nervous about entering the wilderness with fewer than four bodies:

You can always approach the laborers and see if one or more of them are willing to be unskilled escorts/bearers. Ghrym can't really speak for anyone, he's just offering his opinions.

You can try to persuade one of the guards to abandon his current job--it'll just be expensive. See above on Ghrym's assessment.

You can make an initial foray into the wilds alone or in a very small group to explore a bit and learn something about the area without engaging. There may be danger, but from all accounts nobody's died or even been the victim of goblin attacks so far in the region that's been mapped out.

You can wait for one or two more travelers--I've already got two or three character sheets for folks who haven't yet posted in the Rogues' Gallery so they should be on their way pretty soon.

There are probably other, more creative solutions as well that I'm either not thinking of or want folks to figure out on their own :)

What are the consequences of Charm Person once the charm is broken? Does the target know that it was charmed?

Unless the target is unaware that you cast a spell on them, they are fairly likely to ascribe any actions they wouldn't normally have undertaken which they perform under the influence of the spell to your arcane trickery. So there are ways to mitigate the lasting impact, but they require careful planning and use of the spell.

Well, if no one else shows up in-game by tomorrow, I'm going on a sightseeing tour with one of the Hunters tomorrow.

Quick reminder that those who have completed an expedition may elect to create an additional PC to run concurrently but not in an expedition with any other PC they have.

Keehnelf, is it ok for a human MU to use a shortbow? at lvl 1 he will only have 1 spell and a bow will help keep him out of melee combat since he can't wear any armor. Your thoughts? I'm in the process of making a second character.

I don't have my PDF in front of me but iirc the ranged options for MUs are intended to be throwing daggers or darts. Can anyone confirm if darts are listed as a weapon option for MUs? If so, go that way. If not, I'll have to consider a house rule.

I picked darts for Wendall. This is what the book says...
they are only able to use small weapons such as a dagger. They are unable to use shields or wear any kind of armor.
MU's can use darts in 1E/OSRIC/etc. so I took the liberty of using them in this game.
Hope that helps. Let me know if that's unacceptable please.

Ok, given that input here is my (more or less) definitive list of allowed magic-user weapons:

Dagger or equivalent
Staff
Dart
Sling
Rod
Wand
Scepter
Shortsword

Am I correct that everyone who has posted a character so far is in one of the two parties? Or is there anyone else about to join?

There is a new halfling being played by Dram who is set to join soon--he's posted in the Rogues Gallery but not introduced himself in the Tavern yet.

I just ran into an interesting optional rule on a blog that I'm considering modifying and using in the event of character death:

When a PC dies on an expedition, the party may elect to take one full day to recognize the dead character and perform some kind of appropriate funerary rites. This can happen either out in the wilds or once back in town, and each party member on that expedition can elect to spend up to 100gp per level of the deceased PC to contribute trappings to a grave, help build a monument, etc.

Any PC may only spend treasure at that time and only once, but instantly gains 1xp per 1gp thus spent.

Thoughts?

I'm thinking maybe we shouldn't go rushing out to attack big bad wolves if you're thinking about rules to apply when we die. :D

Hehe :) I was mostly thinking about in general, and specifically in the group currently engaged in combat that seemed likely to lose one or two PCs until I rolled horribly!

Also, I will ALWAYS advise gathering as much information as possible about future opponents before going into battle against them. It is a really great survival technique. Remember that this is a sandbox, and not an MMO, so just because something is close by doesn't mean it's designed to be kill able by first level characters. If it's not roughly an appropriate level for the area, you can expect to get clues along the way to alert you to that fact, though...

I like this approach...as players we shouldn't expect to face only manageable foes by happenstance.

By the way, you seem alarmingly disappointed about the wolves' poor rolls last round. I'm scared ;)

I will be at a gaming convention this weekend, so I don't know how much opportunity to post I will have until Sunday evening. Just wanted to give you guys a heads-up.
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

I can think of far worse reasons to miss out on some gaming than doing other, more intense, gaming :) enjoy!
