Approaching the bodies affords a clear view of both tunnels. The strange purple moss continues down the easterly tunnel, whilst the northerly tunnel is free of said growth.

"This moss is worrying to me. Let's take the North tunnel, after searching the bodies."

Rhys the Traveler

Rhys bends to examine the bodies to see if he can determine the cause of death. He also checks to see if the bodies were already looted.

Rhys is of the opinion that the two orcs have been bludgeoned to death as if from a set of great fists. They have been stripped of their possessions -- he can actually see where the creatures' coin purses have been recently cut -- perhaps within the last 48 hours. Their weapons -- crudely made blades of dark iron -- have been snapped and tossed atop the bodies.

Rhys shares this information with the rest of the party.

The adventurers decide the bet course of action is to continue along the northern, un-mossed tunnel. After only sixty or so feet, they find that the tunnel comes to an abrupt end. It has been walled off with some sort of smooth stone. In the center of the wall is a metal door, crudely beaten out of dark iron. Rhys places an ear to the door and hears nothing. It does not appear to be trapped. Gentle pressure applied indicates it is locked -- or at the very least difficult to open -- and there is no visible keyhole.

Tev Meren

"Should we return topside and do our best to figure out where this door is in relation to what's up there? It looks like the only way in from this side is to knock."

"There's still the purple moss tunnel, but I'd be happy to leave that one alone. That stuff's... unnerving. Though I'm game if we need to exhaust every avenue."

Severi checks to see if the door has hinges or fastenings that could be removed.

Severi examines the door more closely. He discovers a concealed lever, some five feet away, crafted to look like a spur of stone. It, however, is obviously artificial, and could likely be the means for opening the door.

Rhys the Traveler

Rhys draws his sword and indicates he is ready for Severi to activate the lever.

Severi shrugs, resigns himself to the fact that mortality is their constant companion anyway, and hits the lever.

The iron door swings slowly open, revealing a dimly lit room; the foul stench of offal and unwashed bodies spills forth into the tunnel. Three of the orc-like creatures -- sitting around a stone table in the center of the room -- turn around with a start and stare, tusked mouths agape, at the sight of the adventurers.
You guys win surprise. Rolled a 5 for you, 1 for them. They're about 15-20' distance from you.

Tev Meren, Fighter

Tev can't read, but he's no dummy. He waits outside the room for one of the spellcasters to cast sleep on the orcs. Once he gets the signal, he strides in and kills them, starting with any who didn't fall somnolent.

Severi stands back and casts Sleep, centered on the far side of the creatures, as far as possible while still including them in the area of effect.

Once Severi casts his spell, Rhys swiftly moves up to the largest creature still standing and engages it in combat

Surprise Round

Acting quickly, Severi intones his spell of sorcerous somnolence. Two of the orc-like creatures slump to the ground where they sit, whilst the third is somehow able to shake off the enchantment! Just as he is beginning to rise, Rhys and Tev stride forward: with a single swipe of his magical blade Rhys severs the orc's head from its body. Tev quickly slits the throats of the other two.

The room proves to be fifteen feet or so across and twenty deep. Besides the stone table in the center of the room there are a half-dozen short javelins leaned against one wall, a keg containing some vile smelling swill in the corner and what looks to be an early warning system dangling from the ceiling. In reality, the alarm consists of a battered sheet of iron suspended from a chain. The hafts of the spear are fashioned from yellowish bone, the tips stone. The room is dimly lit by a strange sort of glowing fungus that grows in patches on the wall and ceiling, providing only a modicum of light.

There is an open corridor leading out of the room to the north, and another to the west.
Again, we're going to assume that you guys enter through the southern wall, facing north.
