Zix's precautions pay off as her pole slides against a raised stair at the 10' mark. One could take a tumble tripping over that. The elf thief steps over and continues down another 20' then to an end in what you guess to be a room. Infravision reveals nothing. There is a wall to your immediate left and right, running from the edge of the stairs.

Then appears a line of light on the floor in the wall opposite you, perhaps maybe 20-25' away. Light from under a door?
Infravision reveals heat sources but if none, like underground, it isn't like nightvision.

Zix will continue down the hallway using her infravision, probing ahead with her 10' pole, checking the floor, ceiling and walls for any depressions, obstructions, tripwires, etc.

At the bottom of the stairs, Zix's probing with the 10' pole detects an illusionary floor covering a 10'x10' pit.
The first concealed check failed, which is where the pit is. There was no specific find traps roll. But the pole was in use, so I decided a Save possible.
Zix save vs. magic [1d20] = 12 Made it, with Wisdom bonus added.

Zix will probe around the sides and edges of the pit with the 10' pole for any ledges, handholds or footholds which might help her around.
Thank you. I like that you explain your rationale in the text. It's interesting to see how DMs handle situations.

The stairwell is 6' wide. Zix sees that by jumping from the third stair to the immediate left or right, she can most likely make it beyond the pit. (Dex. check with -1 bonus.)

Zix leaps to the left, avoiding the pit. The room is empty. The elf barely makes out in the darkness that the room is triangular shaped with the stair entry the tip of the triangle and the wide base being the other end, where the door is. The light from under it has a torch quality. It is quiet.

How wide is the base end, where the door is? About what is the height of the triangle?
Zix will listen at the door, unsuccessfully and peer under it through the crack to see if anything can be made out.

The triangular room is 10' wide at the eastern tip at the stairs, and 30' wide at the western base. The door is set on the south end of the western wall. Thr ceiling is 9' tall. Zix listens at the door and hears nothing. There is not enough space under the door to make out anything.

Zix will check the door for traps.. unsuccessfully.

Satisfied that there are no traps (falsely?) and there's hopefully nothing directly on the other side, Zix unshoulders her bow, notches an arrow, and kicks in the door!

Zix kicks open the door into a short 10' hall that opens into a torch-lit room. From her angle, the elf thief cannot see into the room except along the left-hand (south) wall, which extends 20' beyond the hallway before meeting with the west wall of the room. From Zix's current vantage, the part of the room she can see is empty.

With her bow and arrow at the ready, Zix will slowly move south and stop before she gets to the corner. Then, she'll peek around the corner using her hand mirror.

With her mirror, Zix sees the room is 20' across and 30' long. To her right in the middle of the east wall is a door. Across from it in the west wall is a 1' diameter metal gong, held inside a locked cage with bars an inch apart. The distance from bars to the gong is about 16".

Above the gong is a wall sconce with a lit torch. In the middle of the room, getting up from a simple wooden chair, is a roguish chap with a 10' pole. He twirls it expertly and says: "Heard you kick the door in. Nice mirror. Your task: ring the gong. My task: stop you."

Swinging the pole, the man leaps toward Zix!

Thug and Pole - Round One

The rogue is surprisingly quick, leaps, runs and swings at Zix as she brings up her bow. The elf jumps back avoiding the pole and fires point blank. Her dodge upsets the aim and the arrows miss.

Zix will back up towards the door she came in and continue to loose arrows into the man with a pole.

Thug & Pole - Round Two

Zix backs away toward the door behind her while firing a shot. The rogue dives to the left and comes back up swinging the pole. He is off balance and his strike misses. Zix leaps back, bumping the door and firing point blank. The arrow hits! The rogue winces in pain.

Actions for Round 3!
- Initiative: The Runner [1d6] = 3 vs. Enemy [1d6] = 1
- Zix is at short and point blank range for her two shots. Arguably the second arrow may not be possible given its melee combat at that point, but whatever.
- Thug pole [1d20] = 8, dam [1d6] = 2 Miss.
- Second arrow comes at end of round given multiple attacks of bow.

Is this one a melee round or is missile fire still possible?

At this point, melee as you're sort of on top of each other at the end of the 10' hall/door. If you can gain a little distance an arrow could be fired.

Zix doesn't want to be forced out the door, where he might lock her out and she'd fail the test. She'll drop her bow and attempt to grapple with the man and throw him in the pit.
Zix attempts to grapple. Base score + DEX modifier of 67%: [1d100 ] = 46
N.B. The base chance doesn't include modifiers for her opponent's armor, whether he is slowed, stunned, or hasted, or his movement.

If she hits the effects will be determined by the following roll:

[1d100 + 33] = 70+33 = 103
N.B. This roll includes a modifier for STR and DEX. It does not include modifiers for her opponent's armor or shield, her opponent's DEX, her opponent's STR, whether he is slowed or stunned, as well as their height and weight differences.

I'm sure you're going to hate me now. :geek:
